Oh yeah, I remember that.

The maelstrom of the post-partum days, and you're working, and it's all so very compelling and important and must be gotten right. Day care/stay at home/nanny? Sugar? Biscuits? Teething advice? The constant pull and tug and struggle juxtaposed with that bottomless joy. Oh yeah.

You'll get lots of advice on the specifics and opinions. My kids never had teething biscuits and somehow survived the arrival of all their teeth. But there's that mesh bag thing that One Step Ahead sells that friends of mine would use to hold ice cubes, which they swore was the key to happy teething days.

Don't forget to laugh and breathe and remind your husband to do the same. More than anything, your marriage needs you to laugh and be friends together.

Laugh and breathe and do your best.

...and as far as the controlling mom thing, well, as the mom you are the 'glue' of the family. you just are. don't know why, its just that way. I know where you're coming from about being left holding the baby and everyone else just goes and does what they want.

but being the mom is special. not easy, but special and difficult and somehow we'll get thru it.

but hey, you have a nanny so it can't be all that bad, right?

Work solo, but not alone

The need for coworking space is growing with the downturn in the economy & many companies & entrepreneurs looking for ways to cut office expenses. Also, those that work solo by telecommuting or traveling frequently may need a change of scenery & the interaction of others. Coworking spaces offer a welcoming, professional environment at lower costs where you can network & share ideas. Most coworking spaces offer a variety of membership packages based on use of space & budget.

The coworking movement is spreading to cities large & small. The downtown business district of Chattanooga, TN has a new coworking space available. Jellies, a free work event to meet other mobile professionals, are held every other Friday. Just bring your laptop & go to work. twitter.com/conciergelevel or wiki.coworking.info/CoworkingChattanooga

I'm moving to Korea...

This post really hit home. I actually decided this year to live abroad for a while and teach in Korea. I love to travel, and I happen to be a teacher as well as a writer. I'm blogging about my experiences, from completing my application, landing the interview, to actually moving over. The blog is called Korea-Diva.

Telecommuting rules :)

I'm a telecommuter, and the cool thing about it is that I can work from anywhere. If I need to go visit my brother, I don't have to take vacation days to do it - I can just work from his quite guest bedroom on that day.

The firm I work for is starting to express some backlash against the mobile workstyle, because some people abused the privilege. But overall, I think the low-cost factor is going to be a big attraction in the coming years to the widespread adoption of telecommuting as a work culture.

I live in limbo between science and tech, and have yet to find a mobile niche to my work. I live in hope, though.

Taught that to my four-year-old last week, at which point he jumped off my lap and said Mommy had to work now.

And ooh, the Gossip Girls? Can't wait for the years ahead!

Working from home

I handle it in much the same way. Although I don't have the call outs on poo, since my daughter is now 15.

Usually she'll march into the tv room, where the computer is located and bug me about getting on. That's when I glare back, tell her mom's working and she can check her myspace page later.

At this point, since she knows that mommy working means, possibly, more $$ for her to spend, she'll turn down Gossip Girls without asking. I found out the same thing too, many of my sources now work from home as well, so they are not shocked when the dog starts barking at the cat etc.

Nelle - I see your point of

Nelle - I see your point of view that there is less access to services if companies go to a 4 day work week but from my understanding the hours are longer on those 4 days. In my experience that allows for greater access without missing work.

In our town Dentist's and the like are open later hours 4 days a week and this allows for people to get in in the evenings after work instead of missing work for an appointment. Wouldn't government services be the same way if they were only open 4 days?

I actually was self employed and worked at home for a decade.

Where things reached a high point, they rapidly disintegrated as my life fell apart... have rebuilt it now, but because of the history, would be scared silly of working at home now.

It's Not for Everyone

Great comments. Thanks for pointing out Nelle, that telecommuting is not for everyone. It is great for many people, yet I know some folks thrive on being in an office setting (partly how co-working has gotten so much recent attention)....and their home environment is not conducive to working at home. Not to mention some positions just plain old don't lend themselves to telecommuting. For instance - we do NOT want our ER nurses, police force, and security guards working from home, right? Yes it sounds ludicrous but is a great example.

For many though -- if the job & situation serves, why not be able to capitalize on it? For some like assertagirl, it is the ideal win-win for all.

Thanks for chiming in!

Discussion underway...

in our agency, at the behest of our governor to find ways to cut costs. We already have some flex time (which I do not use) but this would move us to a four day week. There is also some discussion of telecommuting for adjudicators. I'm personally resistant, for reasons I'll leave out of this.

There is a downside to a four day week, and that means in a down economic climate, unemployed folk will only have access to our resources four out of seven days.

In the end, that is not my call.

Working from home is fantastic.

I currently work full-time from home and I love it. The program was piloted about four years ago and although initially the company was reluctant in allowing employees to work from home, they now practically encourage it. I'm an editor by trade and the work I do simply requires a computer, telephone and internet connection, all of which I have at home.

I save the cost of gas, reduce my carbon footprint, can work when I'm feeling most productive (in the evenings sometimes) and get tax deductions for my home office space.

I think it would be great to see more and more companies use the cost of fuel as an excuse to allow more employees to telecommute!
