Not across the pond. That's why I say I'm not sure why Guy Fawkes get's celebrated here. South Africa. So we have a nice mixture of British and Hindu fireworks.

In the UK?

I take it you are our cousins across the pond?

Fireworks are deadly, dangerous, messy and - okay, I admit it - a whole lot of fun. My family in Mississippi has an entire cabinet that's filled with them - YEAR ROUND. Things starts exploding on July 2 but really, they are set off all year long. Why? "Why not?" my brother says. "It looks like Baghdad on the bayou." No permits required.

Yeesh!

Where I live

Where I live, we dont have 4th of July, but we do have Guy Fawkes (why? who knows) and Divali, usually close together.

These days its illegal to celebrate with fireworks here, except if you get a permit - and they only give those if you are holding an official fireworks display at an event. If you have spent any time around terrified animals, or seen the injuries caused by fireworks to people and animals, this seems very reasonable.

A couple of years ago, before the ban, the first few weeks of november were like a war zone. Thunderclaps going off like bombs everywhere. Kids across the road experimenting with fireworks in tin cans. :(

Chewy things distract me too!

Hey Laurie,

Happy Canada Day ... er, Night! Glad to hear the chew toy is helping to distract your dogs. I'm impressed that your neighborhood has posters about this issue. Now if we can just get all the humans to read them ...

Hopefully, I won't see any dogs around this weekend - I'd rather they all be at home with chew toys.

Fireworks are happening right now

It's Canada Day and our fireworks (I live in the Nation's Capital) are happening right now. I have the doors and windows closed, the dogs here with me (my spouse and older son are out watching the show) and I just gave the dogs each a chewy to distract them.

It seems to be working.

Every year, I see the posters go up around my neighbourhood in the days that follow July 1. Beloved dogs got scared and bolted when people brought them along to the fireworks or even just left them unsupervised in the back yard.

Thanks so much for this post.

Just wish they flew internationally

I recently moved to South Korea with our 105 lb. Bullmastiff, Maggie Moo. Having a carrier like PetAirways to fly internationally would've saved so much heartache, so much money & so much of our sanity.

My poor baby girl was en-route for 48 hours straight from DFW to Atlanta overnight and then onto Seoul. They wouldn't let her kennel fan travel with her; the $30 super-sized water bottle I bought for her disappeared somewhere along the way & I don't think she was walked at all.

The Army wouldn't mover her & the professional pet shippers wanted $5,000. And needless to say, an Army wfie just doesn't make that kind of money. So I spent a solid month learning the logistics of shipping a very big dog overseas.

This would've been great.

Community Does Include Cats

I had the same thought. Obviously, the judge does not consider felines - stray or owned - part of the community. I like to think that the person responsible will be tried, convicted and face a lifetime of scorn and karmic retribution.

Class Nightmare

Thanks for touching on this earlier, Nordette. I'm crossing fingers and paws that the correct culprit is in police custody. If so, it's going to be hard for his family - cat owners - to swallow this.

"People who abuse animals often don't stop there"

I have seen the headlines in this case but have not been following it that closely since it honestly breaks my heart to know the cruelty of mankind towards animals. Living in Florida has been a heart break for me since, due to the warm climate, there are lots of stray cats wandering around. While my boyfriend and I rescued a kitten in October and he now has a loving, happy home, I have seen two dead kittens on the road in the past month and I've cried for days about it.

I don't see how the judge can possible think that he doesn't pose a danger to the community or himself. Sociopaths often start with animal cruelty (http://www.animalliberationfront.com/Philosophy/AbuseLinked/Sociopaths.h...).

"People who abuse animals often don't stop there," Peter Wood, deputy manager of animal cruelty issues said recently.

He murdered people's family and did so in such a disrespectful manner, and with a smirk upon his face. Animals have feelings too. They love with their whole hearts and bring so much to people's lives. I wish he'd rot in jail forever but wait... he "poses no danger to himself of the community."

Will justice ever be served to the cats he ruthlessly murdered?

Owners as Attendants?

Yeah, that would probably make me feel better too. Then again, I'm trying to picture a plane full of dogs-on-laps and I see chaos. Best option is probably just to drive but that might not always be possible.

Does this mean you can't take your dog to doggie day care? I guess this would require the same type of trust, only on the ground.

I don't think I could trust the attendants on the flight with them. If my dog could come WITH me and sit on my lap, absolutely I would pay $250 each way.

oh my gosh

I didn't know oprahs dog gracie died last summer. I heard about the puppy and parvo. Any puppy can get parvo it is very contgious so it is not just from adopting shelter dogs. There are so many animals that need homes. If caught early parvo can be cured. My dog had it as a puppy and he lived. If they have upset stomachs and are puppies and have been around other dogs take them to the vet as soon as possible. Do not wait!

I've always thought my animals where angels. I remeber crying one time and my cat who has since passed away came up and put her paw on my face. It was so sweet! I have the sweetest cat's right now who cheer me up everyday.

Love children but don't want my own.

Hi. I'm another "cats not kids" person, sort of. I love other peoples' kids (which is unusual, no?) Miss my nieces and nephews. And I did have some feelings of sadness after my hysterectomy 2 years ago, even though I'd pretty much decided I wasn't going to procreate.

I've been accepted into the Green Moms Blog Carnival even though I don't have my own kids. They call me a "mother of the earth." I'll take it, although given the choice, I'd rather skip the Mom part altogether.

I really don't blog about being child-free either, my focus being on environmental issues, especially plastic. I do, however, find myself blogging about my kitties in spite of myself. They are the real stars.

While I don't blog about the issue, I'd love to be included in any child-free women bloggers groups.
