I'm not a sneaky pie fan and add that on top of just plain disliking Rita Mae... I'm wary. I might end up reading it, just because I'm a glutton for punishment, though.

I adored Rubyfruit Jungle and liked nearly all the books BEFORE the Sneaky Pie books. I read a couple of them but they just didn't do it for me. I also didn't love her horse and hound books.

Retro-Food.com

Animal Magnetism by Rita Mae Brown

Denise, if you like the Sneaky Pie Brown mysteries and love pets, you'd probably enjoy it. A lot of it *is* about Rita Mae Brown, so if none of the above apply and you're not a fan, it might get a bit tedious :-)

I'm not a Rita Mae fan and I'm on the fence about whether or not to read this.
It hurts that they can't understand

"Of course, the language barrier is even more excrutiating when your pet is facing cancer and you want to explain what is going on. Still, petting, snuggling and hugging seem to work effectively. Just keep dishing out the love to those great animal teachers and they'll get the message."

Oh my god, no kidding. My kitty Arya and I bonded completely when she broke her leg last year. I was the only comfort she had, snuggling and kissing her and crying because I couldn't explain the pain or the big lampshade around her head or the itchy staples in her leg or why she had to live in a cage for a month. We named her Miss Hobble Bobble after she was allowed to walk around outside the cage for a bit. Here's a video. It's funny. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cqrD3HarnuI She Did recover fully into the punk rock kitty she always was. I realize this has nothing to do with dog cancer, but it does have to do with comforting a sick animal.

Beth Terry
www.fakeplasticfish.com
@fakeplasticfish
FaceBook

My Take-Away

I'm still rolling this post around in my head and realize now, it could really be a book. My main confusion comes when I realize that every person I communicated with that profess belief in the Rapture (three in total), had the same initial reaction to the post-Rapture pet care: "What a crock! That's not fair to prey on gullible people like that!"

I don't get it. If you believe in the Rapture and you love your pet and don't believe they are going with you then, yes, there's some ice in your aorta.

~ClizBiz

BlogHer Contributing Editor, Animal Concerns, Proprietor, ClizBiz

Clarification: Deduction - Not Credit

Hey Mike,

Thanks for chiming in here to clarify an important difference.
Misunderstanding?

Rep McCotter's proposal is for this to be a *deduction*, not a *credit* like the child tax credit. It would be valuable only to people who have sufficient deductions to itemize on Schedule A, and the impact on their taxes would be only a percentage of the $3500 - for example, a married couple in the 25% bracket would see their taxes decrease by $875, if their other itemized deductions totalled at least $11,400.

"The largest percent are

"The largest percent are atheists who think this is the funniest thing they’ve ever seen and also, they want to be pet rescuers."

That was my thought exactly when I first heard that story. I so want that job. Except I doubt I'd actually get to do the job, not believing in the rapture and all.

I was disturbed by some things your friend said, especially this:

"Because for me, if I’m in heaven, I’m not too concerned about where my dog is. I love my dog but I just don’t think it’s that important of a thing. It kind of sounds cold-hearted doesn’t it?"

Um, yes. It does sound cold-hearted. And it doesn't sound very Christian either. Where is the compassion? How can someone who professes to love their pet not care what happens to it when it's left along to fend for itself? This statement does not parse.

Beth Terry
www.fakeplasticfish.com
@fakeplasticfish
FaceBook

My dog past away two years ago but there was no doubt in my mind that if anything happened to her that required mouth to snout I would be there. Pet safety and emergency medical is so important. Thanks for the post, loved the tortoise and the basic CPR instruction.

I downloaded an app for my iPhone where I can fill in all my pooches stats - in case of emergency and such, I've got all her normals/allergies/injuries/etc - plus, it has a plethora of various scenarios in which to help a pet. From CPR to spider bites, to burns and cuts/abrasions..just about any abnormal situation you can imagine, it tells you how to fix it. Some, like the CPR, even have videos you can watch.. it's only $1.99...but I would have gladly paid more since I know that I always have access to whatever may ail my beloved fur baby.

"Silence gives consent." The Innocent Primate Vegan Blog http://innocentprimate.wordpress.com innocent.primate@gmail.com
