Bruce Sprinsteen and Superbuild

Thanks for the information about the Habitat for Humanity SuperBuild, miscellanea. It sounds like a great event.

Maria, the link to Bruce Sent Me is great. I remember hearing about his doing that in 2007, when a local Oakland organization I've supported in the past, People's Grocery, was the recipient of donations when he played at the Oakland Oracle Arena.

Since I'm located in Tampa Bay, I'm aware of a variety of related fundraising ventures trying to make the most of having this event in our community. The Habitat for Humanity SuperBuild, for example, is part of the NFL's Community Impact Program.Two local Habitat affiliates are inthe middle of a week-long blitz build which will result in six new Tampa homes for families in need--plus an additional "Champions" home that will be delivered to a family in the winning team's home state.

Bruce Sent Me

Great post, Britt and an impressive round up of opportunities.

This isn't "official" but in honor of Bruce Springsteen playing the halftime show at the Super Bowl you could make a donation to an appropriate charity. At his shows he always invites a group to be highlighted, gives them space and encourages the audience to donate. Generally these groups are local food banks.

Although the "Bruce Sent Me" specific donation link didn't survive the name change, you could still put the name in the comments or honor section of a donation form once you find your local food bank through Feeding America.

A few other Springsteen and fan supported charities are Melanoma Research Fund or the fund named for E Street band member Dan Federici and the Kristen Ann Carr Sarcoma Fund.

Thanks for this info. I wanted to add another organisation that I've just come across called the Isha Foundation, whose main aim is inner transformation, but also contributes widely to development projects in India. There's also a center in Tennessee. See here: http://ishafoundation.org/

Thanks for sharing your insights about the pros and cons of nonprofits' collaborating. Perhaps an alternative solution is not that more existing nonprofits should merge, but that people who have ideas for new ones should see if they can collaborate with old ones before they start a whole new organization.

Collaboration works and costs

Two non-profits that do arts-related work in Boston have voted to merge. There will not be an immediate cost savings although tehre will eventually. They have collaborated on projects for years and while their work is complimentary, it is not the same. Having worked with the EDs of both organizations, the sad truth is that oen of the will be out of a job after the transition period and so will another staff member or two. (They are tiny.) That is the aspect of merging that is not so nice.

As for collaboration, I think that collaboration is key for organizations to do effective work especially when they have budgets that don't really cover the tremendous work they do - a situation that many non-profits are in. That said, for collaborations to work there usually has to be a "lead" collaborator. definied, one that will make sure that deadlines are met, follow-up is completed, etc.

Foundations are certainly encouraging more non-profits to co-locate, collaborate, and even merge. In a free society, one can get an idea for a program and create one's own organization. I don't think that's unhealthy. I regret that as a society we spend so much more on war than we do on forces for positive change in the world.

The where else? was a question - probably bad grammar should have where else to donate? only to say that my preference is to make donations - as much as possible to Cambodia - but also give to other places!
