I loved this story when I read it. So touching. A true mom indeed.

What a marvelous way to respond in a crisis

Officer Xiaojuan is to be commended for acting quickly and humanely/womanely to nurse those babies.

During the Blizzard of 1978, my daughter was 3 months old and breast-feeding. I didn't have to panic about getting formula as some of my friends did. As long as I was able to stay hydrated, I could and did breastfeed her.

I also volunteered to breast feed a baby who was sickly and needed mother's milk. It wouldn't bother me if someone else breastfed my child (now grandchild) in an emergency situation. Not at all. Better to have them have nourishment and be held in such a situation, than worry about the "what-if's."

Candelaria - Good and plenty!

That is just so incredibly moving. I love thinking of the solace, both spiritual and physical, that those babies were provided.

A year ago I wrote to a woman who found herself no longer able to breastfeed as a result of a cancer diagnosis. I offered to send expressed milk, logistics of time and distance did not allow us to do it, but the gesture brought a degree of comfort to both of us.

The horrifying thought of orphaned infants crying form hunger practically makes my milk let down and I haven't BF'ed in a year! What a wonderful instinct she had. I hope other mothers follow her example. A beautiful story during a very tragic time. My prayers go out to the people of China.

I admire the woman but who wouldn't have nursed those babies in need? Babies are crying ,your milk is flowing.....it would be humane common sense to offer help ASAP

Thank you so much. If you wish to add the link to the second article, about the junta's enclave, it is here.
Anything that can be done to get this news out can potentially save lives. It is certain that looking away from Burma will lose lives. Thanks to you and to anyone else who re-blogs either or both of these two articles.

News from the American press is fairly thin. More is coming out of the UK and other Asia/Pac areas, but even then it is not so robust. The current silence is eerie and frightening.

Thanks again for your help.

UPDATE TWO: Lawmakers reviewing case of Paris, TX teen

After the Chicago Tribune story referred to in this post about a troubled, incarcerated teenager who accused her guard of sexual assault, the acting director of the Texas Youth Correctional system says he is personally reviewing the case.

UPDATE: Acquittal in Martin Lee Anderson trial

Apparently, the jury accepted the explanation that Anderson, whose Jan. 2006, videotaped beating sparked a national controversy, died of sickle-cell trait, and not from being hit, kicked, dragged and given ammonia by seven guards and a nurse. Anderson had been sentenced to the camp after he took a joyride in his grandmother's car. The guards punished him because they thought he was trying to avoid exercise.

Last year, I came across a
study that found 10 other deaths of people of African descent in custody that were similarly attributed to sickle-cell trait. The medical basis for the claim is disputed.

The story on the acquittal is here.

You remind me of a story

When I was a college student in the 1970s, I was involved in the anti-apartheid movement. Nelson Mandela was not revered then, as he is today, and there were plenty of people who ridiculed our efforts.

In the late 1990s, I was privileged to have two South African students, On one occasion, I shared with them some of the photographs and home movies from my protest days, which culminated in a takeover of our university's main administration building. They looked over everything quietly, and one of them turned to me and said, "The Afrikaner government told us that no one cared."

"There were people all over the world who cared," I said.

I will never forget his shining eyes.

I am convinced that everything we do, however large or small, if done from the heart, has a good effect. We do what we can do , knowing it is impossible to do everything, and impossible even to do one thing alone. I read somewhere that the Burmese military are monitoring the internet (they still have access, just not the populace) to see who is mentioning Burma in their blogs. If only for that, as a reminder to the oppressors themselves, we all write to let them know that we have not forgotten, and that we are watching them right back.
