As a lover of poetry, I can't agree with your statements about the craft more. It's ordinary language made extraordinary by the meeting of minds between the reader and the poet. It's a balm on my spirit. Wherever there's poetry, there's humanity, there's soul.

I am so delighted that you enjoyed the work. Poetry can be so amazing! I had such fun writing it -- I could have gone on for days! I've been featuring one poet a day on my home blog during National Poetry Month, and it is so hard to limit myself to just 30!

His Book of Hours is intensely spiritual and helped me through a really dark time in my own faith. There are so many snippets of his writing that linger in my head and pop up at odd moments reminding me of what I really believe. A few lines that have been playing in my mind recently,

"But when I lean over the chasm of myself--

it seems

my God is dark

and like a web: a hundred roots

silently drinking.

This is the ferment I grow out of.

More I don't know, because my branches

rest in deep silence, stirred only by the wind."

I wrote a blogpost http://tinyurl.com/9mgdzz about StoryCorp and the National Day of Listening (right after Thanksgiving). It links to a very helpful set of questions to ask others. I celebrated the day by using my new digi voice recorder to interview my 90+yr old neighbors. I'm a huge fan of storytelling after publishing my Japanese mom's memoir of life during WWII.

I strongly urge anyone to record the thoughts and stories of the prior generation. In this instance only I'm an advocate of stealth recording if grandma and grampa are camera shy or resistant.

Oral storytelling will not die but their stories alive can be extended by adding photos or making a simple slide show.

I love to listen to the stories of my older relatives. They are so captivating and keep me enrapt for hours. Through their stories I gain hope. Stories can be powerful motivators. We must keep our stories alive to share with others.

I think the need to be creative in artistic expression is a God given need. God is the ultimate Creator/Designer and He created us in His image. Thus we desire to create and enjoy our creations. Art is one of those ways whether it is through song, poetry, proes, narratives, paintings etc.
