So infuriating!

They take kids from where they shouldn't and leave kids where they should be taken away. I can never understand the actions of DHS and can only pray for some consistency and thoughtfulness in their actions - on behalf of the kids!

Sheesh!

It's sad....

...this happens all too often. It's one of the things my family has been fighting for quite some time. We have my stepson with us and we are the ones that have to prove our every move to make sure we can keep him EVEN though his mother commited a sexual crime against a child and has repeatedly been hauled in for abusing him.

It's so sad to think there are situations out there that warrant the system to "take another look" and they don't. Although it's a job to these people - they are messing with our children's lives and their futures.

Thanks for the post.

Wrong In So Many Ways

Is there not one government agency, on any level, that does not need a complete overhaul? If they were reuniting these kids with their parents for the right reasons, they would not have been taken away like they were felons on the run. There should have been meetings with everyone present and plans and a timetable. The kids and their sister (guardian) would have been able to be proactive about the change if and when it happened. I can't speak for Virginia, but I know for a fact DHS and CPS (child protective services) in the state I live in are overworked. The right hands have no idea what the lefts are doing. Their policies and methods are not consistent with their goals and code of ethics. Based on the story, it sounds like the state of Virginia is suffering the same problems. The very sad and especially scary thing is it ends up being the children that go through the most heartache and suffering.

I really like Alice's

I really like Alice's reflections at NOT2WO about donated body parts, but I don't think it's about ego. It's about hurt and shame. Whether it's true that his wife cheated on him or not, the fact that he believes it means he stands shamed on top of being hurt.

This, the heroic act of giving a physical part of himself to save his wife, is the one thing he has over her. Much as someone would moan, "oh, I gave him the best years of my life," or, "I helped her get to where she is in her career," or whatever other miserable reflection when wounded, he is now crying over his lost kidney.

It doesn't make it right, of course. I'm in accord that this does not bode well for him in terms of custody of his children, their relationship with him, or his career as a doctor, but it does paint him as human and in a lot of pain. And that pain, as well as that completely insane, irrational, even villainous rage is something I can understand. Not justify, but understand.

Having said that, he should fire his attorney immediately.

When the story first broke, I asked my husband if he would ask for an organ back if we got a divorce after he donated it. He said no, but he would ask for his boobs back.

We laughed, but I don't think he was joking.

Glad I don't have implants. Weirdo.

Grow Up

This guy needs to grow up and get over it for the sake of his kids. And no creep you can't have the kidney back. But what you really want of course is a big court settlement.

ethically challenged

no surgeon ethically can remove Ms. Batista's kidney (did her MD husband take the hypocritical oath upon med school graduation?). and aside from the (illegal) commodification of a body part via the $1.5 million price tag, this valuation seems a tad high for an 8 year old transplant which is likely well past the half-way point of its life span.

if I was one of Dr. Batista's patients, I'd be searching for a new physician stat. I shudder to think of his ethics and values.

Oh no...

That is awful. While a kidney is not an inconsequential thing, it's also not something you can get back! Plus, it's not as if surgeons are the most pleasant people to live with, either...

How sad for the kids. They're always the ones that suffer most in divorce.

That is simply flabbergasting. I'm a child of divorce so I know that things can get ugly, but that's beyond the pale. I agree, this doesn't bode well for his relationship with his daughters. Poor kids. :-(

The saddest part of all

The saddest part of the situation you describe is that all of these relationships started with love and caring. I remember my divorce and the puzzlement of how we ended up where we were, so far apart that we didn't even know each other.

I was luckier than most in that we divorced in a time when you could make your own agreement and the judge would approve it--and my ex stuck to his part, as I did to mine. It was still painful; I felt as if my heart was being ripped out of me, even though I no longer loved him and wanted the divorce.

But how sad to be in a place where anger and hatred are all that is left of love--that and the children who are so often caught in the crossfire of angry ex-spouses.

Divorce in the Courtroom

This never-ending process of going to court is ridiculous and seems to work right into the hands of these manipulative men work. Why are the courts handling our divorces? And why is it judges, of whom there are not enough and who don't really seem to get a grasp of what is going on, responsible for the health and well-being of women and children?

I filed in November because he is not complying with our PSA (what a shock, he's not paying and he harasses me) and because of delays and ineptitudes, I won't--maybe--have my day in court until November.
