Thank You

Thank you not only for the links in this post and for writing it in general but for sharing your story, your connection(s) to the issue at hand. Far too many people think that drunk driving issues only happen to bad people.

I'm going to link to this post tomorrow as I have a list of safety tips for the weekend scheduled.

Thank you again.

I sold the first car that a bought myself ('91 BMW 318i) when it was 12 years old and had 172k miles. It was still going strong, but I was just afraid of breaking down with a baby in the car.

I am definitely keeping my '01 BMW 325xiT past 200k. It has 110k and shows no sign of stopping.

We also have a '01 Toyota Echo that has 157k miles and nothing at all has gone wrong with it. And it still gets 45 mpg in the summer! Probably 300k for that one :)

Best Time to Buy a Car?

Kim,

The best time to buy any car is the last few days of the month at dealerships when they are pressed to sell those last few cars and get them off the lot to make monthly goals.

Right now there are so many great deals in all brands I would not wait til the fall as business has started to pick up and those great deals may start to disapear.

Make sure you do your homework and reseach all the factory incentives being offered buyers right now. Edmunds.com lists all of these by zip code.

I just bought a Subarau and got an excellent deal.

We're looking into buying a car and this is one of the questions on our minds. We're also wondering whether this is the best time to buy or whether it makes sense to wait for the tradtitional "leftover" season. Any thoughts about the best time to make a deal?

I spent six years driving in the Philippines. Fascinating experience which caused me all sorts of problems once I returned to the US. You get used to no traffic lights, turning from wherever you happen to be and using the horn for everything except its intended purpose.

Ok, now we are talking!

For the east coast I can see this as a winner.

It would depended on the millage to see if it was ok for the Southern California area but for local transport this would work for me.

The name doesn't thrill me unless I think of that Disney movie "Pete the Mixed up Puma" I was on Pete's side by the way but politically, no.

Now knowing how folks drive around here I'd add a high impact safety shield or something that can absorb shocks and direct hits.

So if that can be worked out and if it is affordable to buy or you can rent them by the hour let's do this!
Parents Actively Teaching Teens Initiative

You might also be interested in our PATTI Initiative which teaches parents to train teen drivers.

Did you know that road crashes are the leading cause of death amongst young drivers 15 – 24 years of age?

Worldwide studies have shown that Parents who become actively involved with their teen drivers can make a difference to these tragic statistics.

http://www.patti-initiative.org/

A portion of the proceeds goes to Unitedpinal.org, I am on the board of this charity.

United Spinal Association is a national 501(c)(3) nonprofit membership organization formed in 1946 by paralyzed veterans. Our mission is to improve the quality of life of Americans with spinal cord injuries and disorders (SCI/D). Membership is free and open to all individuals with spinal cord injuries and diseases.

For more than sixty (60) years, we have committed our energy and our talents to improving the lives of individuals with a spinal cord injury or disease. Our initiatives, in promoting inclusion, improving access, fostering independence, enhancing mobility, and demanding equality, along with our commitment to member service, has helped to improve the quality of life and to create opportunities for our members and all people with spinal cord injuries or disorders.

We accomplish our mission by:

    * Ensuring quality health care
* Promoting research
* Advocating for civil rights and independence
* Educating the public and enlisting its help
* Expanding opportunities for all paralyzed Americans
* Providing services to veteran members though our VetsFirst program
* Providing participatory events for children and young adults through our KidsFirst progam
* Providing guidance and motivation through our Peer Mentoring program

Teen Pledge

How about teaching the teens not to hit the cell while driving. Since they learn by example, it would be a good time to teach parents that what they do, children will mimic.

My son is 18 and I didn't have the fear as so many do when he bagan to drive because I know he has watched my driving habits since he was young. He knows the most important thing to consider while driving is that everyone in his site, whether in or outside the car, is his responsibilty.

I am more afraid of the grown ups who think they are worthy of less perception because of the years they have behind a liscense.

Thanks for the mention of

Thanks for the mention of Active Park Assist in the new Lincoln MKS. I'd just like to point out that a number of these creature comforts are available in Ford products other than Lincoln, our luxury line.

For example, the new 2010 Ford Taurus (if you haven't seen the drastic redesign, please check it out at http://www.fordvehicles.com/2010taurus ) will have a premium sound system and massaging seats.

A number of our vehicles, including the Ford Flex, F-150, Lincoln MKS and more have a backup camera. The one-touch feature is available on the Flex as well - and the soon to be retired Taurus X and Flex each have second row seats that fold up at the touch of a button as well.

I could go on and on, but my point is that the Ford brand and Ford family of products offer a lot in the way of pampering. It's part of our commitment to bring as much quality and comfort to as many people as possible - not making a luxury-only option.

No pink cars for me, but maybe for my daughters...

Living in the Dallas area, I think of "Mary Kay Cosmetics" when I think of a pink car--Mary Kay top sellers drive pink around here, so I wouldn't want to be mistaken for one by buying a pink Barbie car. But maybe the younger generation would...however, I don't see how Mattel is staying afloat with the younger generation-- both my daughters and their friends had Barbie dolls, but the older child much preferred playing with Beanie Babies, and my 10-year-old saves every penny to add to her ever-growing collection of Webkinz plush. I, however, was totally into Barbie, and spent many hours under our basement ping-pong table moving and dressing the dolls in a Barbie soap opera. I still have a my old vinyl Barbie dream house (although my kids cracked the roof) a Barbie convertible like the one you have pictured, a rocker Barbie, a Ken doll and all his clothes (although he doesn't "talk" anymore), and their British friend, Stacy. But while I absolutely loved playing with them, I can't imagine their influencing my car buying decision, unless they made a car to look exactly like that peach and green convertible, but then I'd probably go the practical route. It's all about saving money and safety for me, and convertibles or sports cars just don't fit that bill...but my older daughter did have a purple VW Barbie Beetle for her Barbie dolls, and a Beetle just happens to be one of her favorite cars...

By the way, if you haven't heard it yet, John Hyatt has a great song titled, "The Wreck of the Barbie Ferarri".
