Your neighborhood sounds

Your neighborhood sounds like it is (or is becoming) so vibrant and cute! But I think your point also shows that v. cool things can be found in the unlikeliest places -- You just have to look :)

Totally agree -- The details

Totally agree -- The details Walkscore pulls really needs some work. Many of the services / stores near me don't show up at all, while others show up under totally different categories. But I think the overall score tends to be generally accurage -- which makes it a good tool for deciding where to move to if you're thinking about relocating.

Even in dense areas

There are lots of places waiting to be discovered. In Boston, drug stores and supermarkets are abundant in most neighborhoods and have become more so in the past 10 years or so. Transit abounds (although it is aging). Even here, I've found lots of new places by walking and taking off in a different direction.

Recently, I found a neighbor who sells plants and flowers from her backyard barn & garden. It is not visible when whizzing by in a car or on the bus but walking it is. I found that two new consignment shops opened in the past few weeks. There are a couple of small Mom and Pop stores that I plan to check out.

One mile radius living is truly a great idea, one who's time has come. There are areas of the country, however, that are more rural and the radius would have to be greatly extended and traversed by bike if not by foot.

http://blog.candelarisilva.com

Good and plenty!

Wow. That was like amazingly inaccurate.

I mean really, ridiculously, an unfactual map for that walkscore. I'm fortunate enough to live in an intentional community designed for walking, but it's not commercially zoned, so we go farther than a mile to spend money. We used to have a small grocery down the way, but now it's a hair salon.

So I can walk out of my house and buy pottery, or handwovens, or suchlike from my neighbors, and I can learn to play the piano, get a reiki treatment, or study ceramics, and I can go to townmeeting, or see almost any kind of theatre, but if I want condoms or catfood, I'll be going further.

I'm arranging a foot tour here for next spring, however, including studio tours. It'll be great. :)

Hopefully as more people

Hopefully as more people start one-mile radius living, you'll be able to push the local govt. -- along with your neighbors -- for more sidewalks, not more roads :)

I LOVE this

I love this!!!

I live in the county of San Diego but not the city. We went a condo in an area that is not the "best" but we love the condo and our landlord ROCKS!!! We take the good with the bad.

There are some wonderful places for us to walk when it is not hot. The part I do not like is that the sidewalks are not always the BEST. They will go half way down one side and you have to cross to the next. Rather dangerous when you have a stroller with 2 kids in tow!

I love this idea. I hope our next duty station we live somewhere that is easier to be carless!!!

Sounds like you had a bad day...

I just came across your blog post and had to say hello. Your frustration is obvious and, as a person living with multiple sclerosis, I was drawn in.

It sounds as though the space you were saving was not a handicapped space. It is likely that the folks who tried to take the space were simply confused by your presence.

I have a handicapped placard because I often cannot walk great distances. I also use a cane.

However, if I was one of the drivers trying to access the parking space you were holding, I would have been perplexed. I would have had no idea of the story behind a person holding a parking space. I would have wondered why you have more right to the space than I.

Those of us who live with disabilities, and the people who love us, have an uphill battle. But we must fight the good fight. It is our responsibility to educate the general public about multiple sclerosis and other disabilities.

We cannot expect to catch a break every time. Not everyone knows or understands... or cares... about our problems. That's all part of life. We just do the best we can. Sometimes we are the beneficiaries of "The Kindness of Strangers."

One thing is certain -- you are a good friend

ROFL!! That's so true. And the more I disobey, the longer it sulks. I did have a happy moment when I put an Austrailian man's voice on Tom tom. I would follow Hugh Jackson to the ends of the earth, so I guess I can follow Tom Tom around in circles, right?

I have noticed with mine that if I make a different decision and turn right when it wants me to take a left. It goes very quiet for a bit. It tells me it is recalculating, but I know the truth. It's just sulking................

one of my friends has done a Tom Tom review on taktikbitch.com. It's a new gadget review site for women, by women, and i'm really enjoying it!

Which Frys?

I often take my Delorean to the nearest Frys in San Marcos, CA. Even if you are not near here, I have connections with various local Delorean owner groups. I could put you in contact with someone if you are interested in more information on the car. I've owned mine for almost 8 years and enjoy it immensely. For an exotic car, it is relativley inexpensive to own. It certainly turns more heads and starts more conversations anywhere I go than any other vehicle I've ever owned.

The junk in my trunk

I drive almost 50,000 miles a year. Here's what I carry:
*my AAA card--a gift three years ago, a necessity now that my car has 221,000 miles on it
*a jack and handle
*a fully-inflated donut spare (those things can lose air so it's good to check them occasionally, as I learned the hard way)
*a heavy wool blanket and some large plastic trash bags
*gloves--work ones, not plastic
*rope AND duct tape (how can I be from West Virginia and not carry duct tape?)
*de-icer
* a small tool kit with sockets, pliers, screwdrivers, etc
*road atlas
*an ice-cream bucket of wood ashes--these are absolutely the best for getting you unstuck from snow or ice!
*an old military trencher tool to dig out snow, or to dig up something interesting

In the glovebox:
*extra fuses
*a long magnetic reacher thingie with a light on the end. Very fun, and mighty handy when someone drops a bolt in the wrong place
*handi-wipes
*reading glasses
*matches
*tissues
*ink pen
*cell phone charger
*extra cell phone battery

Under the seat:
*water bottles
*a BIG flashlight that can shed light or be a weapon if needed
(a gift from one of my sons who worries about al the driving I do)
*paper towels
