New Metaphor

I am so looking forward to going to the movies again!

I was thinking of a metaphor that would work for America since the salad bowl and mixing bowl no longer work. What about an ice cream sundae. You have all the flavors to choose from and then you have all of the toppings. So much variety. So much choice. So full of flavor. And so invigorating.

All American

Perhaps now the people who make the movies and write the columns and put certain narrow images of what an "all-American" is will expand their view. I've noticed more journalists and pundits and experts of color on the news channels consistently than I ever have before. All we have to do to be American is to be born here or to be citizens. We come in all configurations. It does't matter how we got here, we're all in the same boat/fix now.

I proclaim myself proudly American - not just in America but of America and about America.

Great Example for Kids

I was hoping that was the message my son received as he watched Obama deliver his speech. I plan to write a blog about just that tomorrow. Today I just posted my poem. If he never accomplishes anything else, Obama has given millions of children a shining example that if they set their minds on a dream, if they pursue it relentlessly, if they focus upon it despite all other distractions, they can bring it to reality. And he's given many adults the same hope.

Lovely

That is a lovely poem and certainly expresses well the feelings of many.

One of my students, an African American boy, came into class today and said, "Obama won. I can do anything." YES HE CAN!

I'm Not Political But I Am Emotional

Okay, so I cry over a lot of things, especially now that I'm perimenopausal, but I'm not very politically minded. I did cry last night, too, watching Obama give that speech. And I was glad my son watched it and heard those words he spoke. I hope everyone takes them to heart. Yes, we can. If we set our minds to it, we can create change. Yes, we can.

And we need change... Here's a poem I wrote about Obama and change:

The new president comes like rain after a long drought.
The land soaks up the needed nourishment.
The people heave a sigh of relief;
Maybe the risk of fire has been lessened.
They can hope.
They have to hope.
They stand outside,
Weeping
Joyfully,
Gratefully,
Listening to the rain fall,
The drops feeding their souls.

I voted for Obama, and I watched Fox News some. I also took into account that the latter typically lies about things. The bias there is undeniable. I think a lot of the young people who voted for Obama did a lot more research than we have been given credit for.

Votes that don't count

Last election, when my mom threw off her vote and gave it to Nader, I gave her a hard time. Her response was "my vote doesn't count anyway" - which is somewhat true since she votes in Red State SC.

And this year, I am going to vote in Illinois where the odds of my McCain/Palin vote making any difference at all is about as slim as they come.

But, you're right - we really don't know what the outcome of ANY election will be until all the votes are cast. It's probable that my vote, and my mom's won't count... but they might. 538 votes in Florida... how many people in SC and Il aren't voting because they don't think their votes matter in the end.

Vote, vote, vote, VOTE.

Actually, I think Obama is

Actually, I think Obama is probably doing well among kids because he is doing well with their parents. These "kids pick the president" polls have actually been proven the most accurate in recent years and have accurately depicted the outcome in the last five elections.

Parents are enthusiastic and talking about politics, and that influences children.

"ways that young voters can use emotional blackmail and manipulation to
guilt trip their parents and grandparents into voting for Obama when
they weren't already planning to"

If these parents and grandparents are being manipulated and guilt-tripped into voting a certain way, instead of being persuaded by reasons and facts, why are we letting them vote? It's important enough that people should think about it, not just feel their way through the decision. I'm a McCain supporter, but I agree with you that Obama's kids' site just isn't a big deal.

It's about time somebody tried to engage children in government. Yes, teach them about choices. Yes. Teach about values. Yes. Teach them about poverty and health care and rights and the power they have to change the world around them. And yes, most absolutely: Use them to get their parents off their butts and into the voting booth.

Seems like a no-brainer.

I blogged about it. Seriously, I don't get why this upsets people. Totally agree with the fact that kids won't be looking at sites their parents don't allow. And if they do manage some unsupervised internet time, there's a lot more to worry about than political websites...
