I'm a Recovering Perfectionist

Yes, perfection has always been a goal of mine, but unlike Amber, I start tons of stuff! Of course they never get finished because they're not "perfect" :-)

I'm doing much better these days, though. My new mantra is "Good enough".

Important post!

I once interviewed Toni Morrison and she said that every time she did an appearance and read from her nnovel, she was re-writing. (This was before she won the Nobel Prize for Literature.) I couldn't believe that she, whose novels were so fantastically written, felt that.

I have seen people use the quest for perfection to be judgmental of others and as a stalling tactic to completion. I strive to do the best I can and then to let go and move on to the next thing.

I have one friend who agonizes over decisions. She's an event planner who really believes there is a perfect shade of green and will go to ten places trying to find it which drives her crazy and means she's always pulling over-nighters when she could have settled on a perfectly lovely green.

She'll learn, hopefully.

I am a perfectionist

This spoke to me. I am absolutely a perfectionist. And in my case it means I don't start things. Once I start I finish because I must, anything less would be failure. So instead I waffle and drag my feet and don't even try, because not trying is better than trying and not being perfect.

Thank you so much for the resources. I think they will come in handy for me.

And there are tons more...

My husband had an ipod years before I did because I was a happy dinosaur with my music cds and ratty cassette tapes. Once I finally wised up, I couldn't believe the number of fantastic shows that were now available to me.

My favorites

I love pod casts. Sometimes I cannot work without listening to my favorite local radio program. Sometimes it is an hour old, other times it can be a week old, but I don’t care since I have my buddies in my ear.

My favorite podcast is The Wallstreet Journal This Morning. This is up to date information regarding business and trends. The hosts are fun to listen to and give their funny sidebar comments. You can find these free podcasts in Google Reader gadget and on iTunes. I have it on my Google page where I can get to it immediately and I also download all my favorites into my iTunes where I can carry all of them with me while traveling and working out. (Ok, I am a talk show junkie!).

Thanks for the article.

Hi there

I'm a lecturer in new media, and I teach a lot of the stuff you are learning...as for how I started my career...

I just jumped in the deep end. Got a computer, got a job designing a Flash website (just started getting literate on a computer) and just winged it, learning as I went.

I actually find it quite weird teaching these things to students, as I constantly find myself thinking - "why are you waiting for me to tell you how to do stuff...when I was learning, I just had to FIGURE IT OUT FOR MYSELF!" which probably just means I'm getting old and crochety.

Just last night...

... I was up until 2am or more because I just couldn't feel like I was "done" with whatever it was I was sitting at the computer to do. The sad truth of it is that you can never be done. Google reader will cough up one more thing. Unless you are SuperWoman, your inbox will never be empty. Facebook... well, don't get me started on Facebook!

I use my inbox as a clearinghouse for self-reminders of things I want to do. I text to my email, I email myself things, etc. I've learned to relax a little and just do what feels good, but the mental clutter of too much dilettanteism and too little time often still wins.

Buddhist practice has helped me a little bit to do the whole "be present" thing which helps for clearing my mind and seeing what to do with the time I have, and that is a path I highly recommend investigating!

Explained very well

Thank you for the great explanation, and the suggestions about the 3x5s, My Idea Map, and the great outline pdf you made. I've been researching how to make quick storyboards for a short film I'm planning on making in segments for my RFTV classes in college. However, as great your suggestions are for an artistically-inclined, many aspiring (or professional, for that matter) directors are pretty adept at only stick figures.

So I thought I'd mention this great program I found that pulled some of my classmates through their prerequisites in storyboarding: StoryBoard Quick. I think that this would be a worthy mention in addition to the suggestions you've made. As I said, I've been looking for cost-effective ways to go about storyboarding, and this software looks to be the best for its price range. I've seen it in action, and it looks great: filled to the brim with content and graphics, rotatable and "colorizable" for amazing customization, as well as including the ability to import any graphic that you pulled from the internet, etc.

Check it out and see if it's as helpful as I'm finding it to be.
