Awesome Day!

Britt,

I worked at a community garden located along the greenspace by an elementary school. (aside: how cool is this idea?). There were probably over 100 people from tiny tots to seniors happily working in the dirt.

It was an incredibly awesome day.

How did the tree planing go, Debra?

Here is the link to Citizen Hope, if folks are interested.

Volunteering, yes!

I have become quite fond of Facebook, because it led me to find Citizen Hope: Citizen Hope empowers people to bring about change through community action and social networking.

In December I help hand out boxes of food, etc. to needy in San Francisco and for MLK I'll be helping 3rd graders plant their plots in a school farm. (you Britt, could be planting trees in Oakland...)

I'm confident there will be additional opportunities throughout the year.

It's harder than you would think to find a volunteer opportunity

Hi faroop,

That's great! We may end up doing something similar. I've been having trouble finding an opportunity in Oakland (where I live) myself, for Monday, that is actual hands on volunteering.

Thanks for a great post

I also had no idea that MLK day was a day of service. I'll be home with my toddler that day. I've searched for some good toddler things, and I think the best is for us to take a load of donations over to goodwill. It's not much, but hopefully it will give me some opportunities to talk to her about volunteering.

U.S. Public Service Academy

I also agree that having an alternative to serve would be wonderful. My daughter after graduating from Syracuse U. joined AmeriCorp for two years . It was great for her as she wasn't eligible for out of Country service due to asthma.

She went on to law school and is working toward being in the NGO field. It takes alot of time and experience but she will do this. She is now working in D.C. towards her goal.

Thought you might enjoy seeing neighborliness in action around the Octamom place...

You're absolutely right, Octamom, when you write, "We truly are one community. We rise or fall together." The more we all realize that, the greater chance we have for surviving gracefully during these difficult times.

Serve America Act

Hi nelle2nell,

I don't know if this addresses your desire for short-term opportunities, but one aspect of the Act would be to, as I wrote above, "Support short-term international service opportunities and strengthen the Volunteers for Prosperity program, which supports short-term international service opportunities."

U.S. Public Service Academy

Seems like the ideas of a U.S. Public Service Academy is one that resonates with a lot of people. As you say, amandalynne85, many people would like to serve their country, but are not able, or do not want to serve in the military.

U.S. Public Service Academy

I was very happy to hear Senator Clinton spoke about the U.S. Public Service Academy at Service Nation. Her unwavering support is vital to the movement and it is encouraging to know that she continues to use all outlets to voice her support. As a woman, what I love best about the Academy is that it offers individuals, especially women, an opportunity to serve their country in a way that military service does not. The military is not for everyone and the U.S. Public Service Academy would allow those individuals who either cannot or do not want to serve in the military an opportunity to serve this great nation of ours. I look forward to the re-introduction of the bill by Senator Clinton next year.

and think we should look at shorter term efforts as well.

The thought just struck as I started to say what a great idea this Act would be... but after getting it in my head, think there is a nice place for less than a year stints.
