I have no interest in baseball and like football because everyone I know seems to enjoy it and it's a fun social kind of thing...but the start of the hockey season is my big deal in October (now that the WNBA is over - it was a good tournament this year.)

Laurie

LaurieWrites

Photos on Flickr

When I think of sports in October, I think HOCKEY! Not that I'm knocking the World Series, I'm just super happy that hockey season has started.

Women in Baseball

Wow. That's fantastic! Congrats to Eri Yoshida. :)

As far as women getting into Major League Baseball, that would first require an American women's baseball league that was considered to be of comparable quality to MLB.

The reason you can't compare this situation to blacks is that the Negro League existed and had comparable players and competition as well as many vastly superior players. The only reason they weren't in mainstream baseball is that whites didn't feel like letting them play. It had nothing to do with skill or ability.

So, in order for women to be considered for MLB, they would have to regularly prove themselves against comparable competition.

Great news!

The Japanese are always on the cutting edge and this time they’re making history by signing the first woman to play pro ball in Japan. Surely we'll see more of this phenom in the future and hopefully other leagues will follow suit.

Simply amazing! Yay!

Blows my mind. My mom played Triple A ball in Vancouver, BC. And I played too, never at that level! But this is great news!

Best Regards,

birthday ideas?

I just used a company called Custom Sports Cards to do birth announcements for my twins. You send or upload photos to their site and fill out a form and they create trading style cards like the pros. We dressed them in matching Giants outfits that my brother in law gave us and had a couple hundred cards made for family and friends. They are really cute and perfect for a photo album or scrapbook. You could do a fun invitation or party favor for your child's party but it takes a couple weeks so you'd need to get on it soon. customsportscards.com

I Understand.. and Hope...

Mandasays17,

I understand what you feel being a Cubs fan. Besides living with one, I am an Indians fan. The two teams with the longest time since their last world series.

I understand the hope of spring, the fear of July, the inability to believe through the playoffs.

So as the season continues (my team is finished for the year, so I'm adopting the Cubs), we shall stand together and watch for that meteor. 'K?

It's football with no pads...

I love this post! The Ten Run Rule is great and I love how you suggest it be applied. My son used to play baseball but since moving to a country that hasn't a clue what baseball is, he has taken up rugby. I do not know the rules and cannot watch long enough to figure them out. It appears to be a sport that combines soccer and football but leaves out ANY of the safety equipment (except mouth pieces... apparently broken bones and head injuries don't matter, but pearly white teeth do). So good luck on your new sporting adventure. I for one am looking forward to the days when I can watch my son in a very boring game of baseball!

OK here's something I know...

Glavine is old. What the heck? I don't even understand spending money on a pitcher that old, especially one who hasn't been performing very well for years (though I will admit I no longer follow baseball at all, much less closely - so maybe he's done better for the Mets than I realize?)

Yea yea, Glavine reminds Braves fans of the "good ole days" - what are they gonna do, bring back Maddux too? Oh brother.
