12 days with a nativity set

Your 12 days with a nativity set is charming, as a gift, giving the pieces one day at a time with the note/poem.

New Year's Traditions

If you have a fireplace, consider writing your troubles on pieces of paper and burning them in the fire. You can encourage your children to burn not only their own problems, but greater things like war, sickness, or the problems of someone they know. It encourages them to tihnk beyond themselves. We usually offer a little prayer with each trouble tossed in the flames.

I like your idea of counting down with some other country. Why not count down with Iraq this year, as a way of being with our soldiers?

I'm also mother of five (sons), and one of 13 children. My mother used to get us up just before midnight to see the ball drop, have a bit of eggnog and snacks. Then we'd go back to bed, after being up for less than an hour usually. I think this was reserved for the "older" children (8 and up). I did the same thing with my sons, and it was very enjoyable--plus we had those few hours of quiet before waking the boys to join us.
