Betty Represents A Whole Generation

Hi Jory,

Like you say, Bets represents the thoughts and feelings of so many who lived through the assassination of JFK.

And how could you forget about the bathroom quickie!?

Baby Draper may not be Don's kid at all. Oh, the drama!

Megan
BlogHer Contributing Editor, TV/Online Video

My Personal Entertainment Blog: Megan's Minute

Twitter:@MeganSmith

Love Starved Sally

Nothing against Sally's outfits because they are cute, and I guess she's kind of love starved. Has there ever been a scene where Betty even hugged her?

But admit it, the child is scary, skulking around the house with those scary stares. The little girl who plays Sally is very good. I think if she we're an adult, critics would say she gives a restrained yet memorable performance.

As far as Henry and Betty, yeah I guess so but if she thinks Francis is going to be more truthful or faithful I think she's deluding herself. He is a politician after all.

And I miss Connor!

Megan
BlogHer Contributing Editor, TV/Online Video

My Personal Entertainment Blog: Megan's Minute

Twitter:@MeganSmith

The loss of innocence

Not to get too clliche, but JFK's assassination is often referred to as the loss of innocence in America (guess they forgot the civil slaughter of the century before). Betty is a microcosmic example of how the country was confronted with truth.

OMG: I forgot about the quickie in the bathroom!

Jory Des Jardins writes on business and career topics at BlogHer, and on her personal blog Pause

Say, Wait a Minute on the Sally Slams

Sally is my favorite character because so much of what she wears reminds me of my own childhood. The behavior is also exactly what was expected of me as a child; except instead of "go watch TV" we were told "go outside and play."

I was watching TV with my mom when Oswald was shot and her reaction was much like Betty's, something like "They didn't want him to testify. Now we'll never know." I'm looking forward to Betty's reaction to the funeral. Jackie placed her own wedding ring on her dead husband's finger. My mom's reaction? "Jackie's saying to him 'I'm free from you at last.'"

Betty is dealing with her own dad's death, her husband's deception, and the assassination of the President. Divorce rates are on the rise, but her dad's lawyer already pointed out that she will have no resources if she divorces. She doesn't want a fling, that's taudry. She wants someone who will take care of her. Who better than an older, wiser Don.

(In our house, we don't expect much of Pete; he's the spawn of two vampires ala Angel, ya know.)

Adela www.theblacktortoise.com

Yeah, let's see what Don has to say in the season finale coming up. Should be very interesting.

And the little girl who plays Sally Draper should get a guest spot as an alien lizard child on "V." She'd be great.

Love that Kraft cocoa ad! One of my great "Mad Men" mysteries has now been put to rest. Thank you.

What kids watch

I like a couple of the shows my kid watches -- Phineas & Ferb and Wizards of Waverly Place. Most of the rest are annoying.

Here's my TV tale of the week. We were watching the end of a Bones (on DVR) last night. One of the final scenes was of two secondary characters kissing and clearly about to get down to business.

Doug said: now they're going to do sex. I looked at him and asked: what do you know about sex? I wasn't freaked out, just curious what he'd say.

His reply: Oh I know things. with a smirk.

This is my life. Welcome to my nightmare.

Susan Getgood blogs at Marketing Roadmaps, Snapshot Chronicles and Snapshot Chronicles Roadtrip.

On Glee

Glee certianly has a more diverse group of people than what you mentioned. Besides the Asian girl as a main character there is a black girl, there is a Jewish girl, there is a gay boy, ther eis a boy in wheelchair, there is a Mexican football coach, and there are varing races in backgroud characters. I believe Glee is doing a good job of mixing up races and abilities.

The Show I hate more than anything

would have to be that incredibly offensive My Super Sweet Sixteen. That is the worst show I've ever seen. It makes me sad to see these girls who are "offended" that Daddy wanted to buy them a $65,000 Mercedes because that's a soccer mom car, and instead pick out an $80,000 Land Rover. For a SIXTEEN year old girl?

--
Carmen

Mom to the Screaming Masses

The Elff Diet

Don't Need to Qualify Why

SpendWisely, you don't need to say that "sadly" you use Supernanny to help guide your parenting. Just because her show is on TV doesn't mean you should disqualify the merit of her advice. I actual believe you can learn a lot from TV and do not think that it should be viewed as pure garbage.

I first learned the word "litigious" from the Oprah show (makes me laugh that a bit), which goes to show that if we teach our children how to be observant they will be able to decipher what entertains and what edifies.

We can always learn.

http://www.thecluelesscrafter.com/

Sadly, my husband and I use Supernanny reference points in determining how to discipline our son. There are many times when we would probably be less structured or disciplined (because it's easier) but the thought of having a child who turns into one of the children on Supernanny is horrible. (Our son is a sweetie by the way.)

Spend Wisely Texas - Living Well and Spending Less in Texas

Not Entertainment for Me

I watch Supernanny because Jo is able to tap into the root of the dysfunction and draw it out of each member of the family. She is capable of deciphering the real issue so that you don't feel you are watching some mock self help show; rather, you're witnessing a systematic unraveling of the issues that prevent parents from parenting with authority and children from accepting it. She is a tough woman. I like how she stands up to parents who tear her down by forcefully reorienting their attention back to the real issue: dysfunction in their family.

http://www.thecluelesscrafter.com/

We're a no-TV house until January (family resolution), but the kids and I used to watch SuperNanny....

I'm pretty sure that they loved it the way that I love zombie movies. They would be sitting with me, with this face- :O glued on for 50 minutes, thinking "Oh, those kids are gonna get it"

Occasionally I even reference back to the show, "Do you remember how EMBARRASSING it was to watch those kids on SuperNanny!? Why are we having this conversation in front of other people?!"

And *whip cracks* they're back in line! Nanny Jo has no idea the good she does, even without using her tips and tricks.

Oh, then you may have the ability to invoke a Supernanny accent if you need the world to snap to your command. I have an accent like that, but it's fake, and as I speak it tend to veer towards Cockney, then German, then who knows what, so it's not too convincing.
