The sister keeping it all together

You've been the one keeping it all together. What a week indeed (and only two more days to get him back up to you. Ugh.) All I can say about the rug is arrgghh! There are no words for that. At least no words I want to actually use.) You and your wonderful husband deserve the biggest thanks for everything. Does that help?

Family matters

I do what I can, cry when I have to, and laugh when I choose.

This has been a week, a holiday endured. He asked me today how my Christmas was, an impossable question. He does not acknowlege the depths of distress that were suffered on his behalf, he did not ask of it. He used the money saved from his rental car return to buy his lady friend the rug.She helped him pick it out. She couldn't manage to get to the hospital for 5 days, but could go shopping. It is hard to remain as quiet as I know I need to be.

Stuggling with a Brother

Does love, of whatever kind, always bring with it some degree of grief? Or is it simply caring about someone so much and them not being capable of doing what we think they need to do? Love, maybe it's about accepting, as hard as that is, those things that make us well up inside and want to scream.

My brother (there's just the two of us), has a special phone that only enables him to call me once a year. He is what he is. And since he is a brother, he still gets my love.

Wow to your sister and her kidney donation. And to all of your family in supporting him as he has struggled, and as he has found ways to express himself that seem counter to what one would hope.

Glad to see that girlfriend and brother have their priorities straight. At least you don't need to depend on them for help.

Health to your brother, or lack of more suffering, or what it is that he needs.

Laura, www.RebelliousThoughtsofaWoman.com

According to UNOS, there are

According to UNOS, there are over 100,000 people in the U.S. waiting for an organ, and 78,000 of those need a kidney. Only having read this post and no others, I have no details about this woman or her particular situation. However, if you are unable to donate to her due to blood typing or tissue matching, there is such a thing as 'paired donation' where muliple donors who do not match their preferred recipient 'swap' so that all the recipients receive organs. (a simple web search will provide more details)

Being a living donor is a wonderful and generous act. Publically soliciting for donors, however, is very risky. Such an arrangment recently resulted in the two parties fighting over money procured in a fundraiser and a legitimate non-profit has pulled into the mire. Many transplant centers won't consider these donations in order to avoid any ethical concerns.

I wish your friend the best in her endeavors; just bear in mind that a transplant is not a cure, but a treatment with its own disadvantages and pitfalls.

It's refreshing to hear support of McCain coming from other woman-owned businesses. I think that you've nailed it with your post -- $250,000 in profit is not an insane amount of money for a small business to earn, especially in rural America where family farms are on the decline. Thanks for helping to encourage free market advantages by giving the facts about McCain's plans!

Small business owner for Barack Obama

I agree with Beth Terry. Obama's tax increase will only apply to those who have more than $250,000 in personal income. Apart from that, I would like to mention that I don't quite understand America's obsession with taxes. I grew up in Germany where most people pay 50% of their income to taxes. BUT: their bridges don't collapse, their high-ways are in tip-top shape, they have health-insurance (and they don't need to shop around for the best or cheapest insurance policy - I believe, McCain said it's an advantage if you can shop around for health insurance in various states to find the best one. I disagree with that as I find health insurance policies hard enough to understand - shopping around for one would cost a lot of time and effort, not to mention the difficulty in understanding the various policies), and the public school system works and public universities are free. So, either way, you pay for things. If your taxes are low, you need to pay for all these other things separately. I wouldn't mind my taxes being higher if they were applied properly and efficiently and would save me money on other vital things. I strongly believe Obama is right man for the US at this time.

A Clear Choice

Obama Plan for lower taxes, health care costs for small biz

Just thought I'd give a link to this excellent post at MOMocrats by Jaelithe which provides a fact check on some of the inaccurate claims in this post and shows how Obama's plan would lower taxes and cut health care costs for most small businesses.

Your taxes go up only if your take-home pay is over $250,000

I'm afraid many small business owners don't understand this. If you are reinvesting in equipment or creating jobs, those funds aren't going to be taxed. As a small business owner, you are taxed on the net profits of your business, not the gross.

Call me what you want, but to me, an individual who brings home over $250,000 after business expenses can pay a higher rate than those of us living on $50,000. If that business owner decides instead to create a few $50,000 jobs with those profits, her taxes stay down and others of us benefit.

Obama's plan will absolutely create jobs!

how you came to your decision. I don't agree with you, but it's always interesting to hear how individuals come to their decisions (especially when they're not attacking/demonizing other people's choices!).

including Joe Biden's stalwart and years-long sponsorship of the Violence Against Women Act, the embarrassment of Palin as some sort of would-be female role-model, the shameful negative campaign of McCain (who could not even keep i>That
promise, McCain's unreasonable obsession with "victory in war" when the terms of what consitutes "victory" keep changing...well for all that and because McCain is in Bush's clothing - while wearing a "Maverick" lapel pin, I'm standing next to Colin Powell, who is standing next to Warren Buffet who is standing next to Maria.

I'm voting Obama/Biden with them.
