Me too! Ok, not the grandparents (cuz that would be weird, cuz they're ummm departed) but me too! Boston - excited - nervous - WITH NOTHING TO WEAR. :D Enjoy the trip down too - it's beautiful right now!

Great Cause

I totally agree, it is awful what those girls are going through at such a young age. I am 25 and still don't feel that my body or mind is ready to go through child birth.

I think that comment

I think that comment absolutely highlights the cultural misogyny that persists despite feminism.

So very very sad.

Protecting Mothers and Babies

Grandmothers can be an enormous influence on children, as your post shows. Most of my motheirng skills came from my grandmother, since my mother couldn't connect to us. As for new mom's and safe birthing, that's a topic that needs to be taken as seriously as your piece takes it. I appreciate your thoughful writing.

So many people I love have had troubled pregnancies.

And some children I love have been quite ill after birth, although the moms have generally been okay. But I now consider it a true miracle and not just the norm when child and mother come out of what is quite an arduous process unscathed.

I'm glad you're there, Emily...and as someone who's been quite close to both her grandmothers, I can attest that it's such an important relationship and it's good when a child (and a mom) can experience it.

Little did your Emily know her namesake would be making such a positive difference in the world of moms and children. Good for you.

the personal is political

emily, i think it's so much easier to relate to the impact of this kind of loss when i hear a personal story like this one. thank you SO much for covering this and for putting a face on what really amounts to a personal and private tragedy times half a million families. that's so, so major.

Argh. I suppose denying care is cheaper than education and providing family planning services? Is that it? Jaysus.

That sounds like one of those, "Um, did I hear you correctly" moments. Shocking.

Isn't it completely mind-blowing?

....That an educated guy who's been on the campaign trail of both Bush Presidents, Clinton and Gore, would say that, looking me straight in the eye with a thoughtful look on his face, like it made the most sense in the world?

This from someone who is following the Presidential candidates on the campaign trail.. Tell me, he's going to give credence to ANY issues of particular interest to women? Or recognize that issues of interest to women are of importance to all.

And then there's the whole racist angle.

Really really gross.

Sexist crap

"Isn't that a form of population control that the world needs?"

Honestly. I never thought I'd be defending Bill Clinton's attitude towards women, but I'm with him. Get girls and women educated to improve health of everyone, not just the women themselves.

Thanks for quoting that, Emily. It's a good reminder of the instiutional sexism and poor judgement of many of our media and establishment leaders.

And one more thing ...

A couple of other points. I LOVE www.womenforwomen.org -- it's AMAZING, and everyone should go check it out. AS is www.biggreenpurse.com. A GREAT site and effort!!!

And Morra, I've gotta say, that yeah, Angelina is really impressive. I'm so tired of all the celebrity mania that I've deliberately not paid much attention to her lately, but at CGI she more than held her own. She's visited something like 40 refugee camps, more than most people who run the NGOs that work on their behalf, and speaks very persuasively. Somehow she manages to get people's attention without coming off as a show-off or know-it-all, while knowing all the facts and making her points. A tricky balance for anyone, I would imagine, but she did it very capably. I got the feeling that the connections she makes to the people she's reaching out to are real and go deep.
