Good for you

I know exactly what it feels like to not have your kids for Thanksgiving and the best way to get through it is to get a jump on Christmas.

I didn't get any decorating done but I got a lot of shopping and the house clean, both of which are tough to do when kids are at home.

Last week I made some fabric gift bags. They came out great. Check out the picture on my blog http://onemomentplease6751.blogspot.com/ and see other ideas for gift wrap alternatives.

Hi Kazari!

The gorgeous Rachelle asked me to join in this lovely conversation as an Aussie Goddess with some Southern Hemispherian soulful Christmas ideas. I had so many ideas, I wrote a whole post of them... you can read them here:

Peas in a Pod

I get my "awesome" (or lack of) craft-skill from my mom. I am with you, I would rather spend the money and buy the perfect gift because my craty gift would either turn out all wrong, or I would never finish. My boyfriend's mom makes all of her holiday greeting cards (I watch). My roommate really likes scrapbooking...I look through them when she is finished.

How about recycled gift wrap?

Here's another idea for eco-friendly gift wrap--make your own from recycled cereal boxes, cracker boxes, and such. Kids will love decorating these, and they are reusable (and quite fun).

Also (and I realize this does not technically comply with the zero plastic challege, but I think it's still in the eco spirit) how about making gift toppers that look like snowballs from plastic shopping bags.

Instructions for both are on The Craft Playground www.craftplayground.com

In addition to the suggestions above

See who among your friends or co-workers who might want to join you.

One friend has contacted her local college to get the name of students who aren't able to go home. She always invites a couple fo her dinner.

There are often people we work with or who are in our neighborhood who might appreciate an invite.

And Christmas for two can be whatever you make it...as self-indulgent as you like. I'd probably do a combo of private and some public event like the movies, or volunteering, etc.

Enjoy!

Our Christmas will be different this year

Because there will only be two of us. But being in Australia, it's not the winter solstice that we celebrate, but the height of summer. Many of the old traditions lose their sense here.

Have you seen any good resources for us southerners?

We're considering a movie marathon

A Die Hard movie marathon to be specific. The first two *are* holiday movies...

And sassymonkey, your day sounds like it will be wonderful. I think ours will end up similar.

common ground: longing for light

Thanks for this lovely and interesting post, Rachelle.

Lighting an Advent Wreath with our daughters while singing O Come Emmanuel each evening after dinner has been my favorite seasonal tradition since starting my own family. Learning some of the tradition's history will really enrich the experience for me.

I also want to thank you for pointing out ways we are all tied together, and how we can value and share traditions, even if we approach them from different understandings and belief systems. There is far too much focus these days, particularly in Christian circles, on what separates us from others, rather than where we can find common ground.
