Nogs

Oh, we put everything in smoothies! Holly Nog is great, too, and Rice Dream has a nog version. I don't like rice milk as well as soy milk, but one of my vegetarian daughters does so I always keep some around for her. It amazes me during the holidays how many people talk about how nutritionally awful eggnog is and they never consider the soy/rice/etc. alternatives. They're out there -- you just gotta look!

Soy Nog is great. I recently did a review of Holly Nog by Vitasoy. I was surprised how much I liked it...and I didn't miss any of the fat. (I never thought to put it in a smoothie. Thanks, Cathy, for the idea!)

Shooting Food

Oh, thanks so much for this list. These are lovely! Shooting food is one of the hardest photographic challenges. When I was a reporter in the lifestyle department of our local newspaper, we always kept our fingers crossed that the food page looked at least halfway appetizing!

I never get tired of seeing photos of food, and I agree it's a challenge to do well.

But they're toooooo good.

Maybe these were a bad idea. They are so good that they have upped my hot cocoa (with maple marshmallows) intake to a probably excessive degree. And they have now officially passed the "kid test" of my daughter and all of her friends. I think I will see what kinds of flavors I can make - cinnamon seems an obvious choice. Orange zest?

If I had the time, these would be a great hostess gift..... Go For It!

A Nod to Nog

Silk Soymilk Nog is great -- delicious and creamy and not-really-bad for you. We put it in smoothies in the morning, frappuccinos in the afternoon and hot cocoa at night all through the holidays. Love this stuff!

Brown Butter Cookies

I chose Brown Butter Cookies from among Gourmet's cookie favorites as one of my 12 Cookies of Christmas. I can honestly say they are one of the BEST shortbread cookies I have eaten in my life. Seriously.

Merry Christmas ~ Happy Holidays!

These are great recycling

These are great recycling ideas for the holidays (or any day of the year really). My dad and I have been re-using wrapping paper for as long as I can remember. Aside from saving the earth, re-using bags, ribbons, and bows will also save money on buying gift-wrapping materials. My family always uses cloth tablecloth and napkins, and we have been saving out plastic food containers for years to re-use them as leftover containers. Taylor Gifts also has many items to help people recycle, like the 3 Recycle Bags and the Can Crusher

My sister's in charge of shortbread for us, she makes REALLY good shortbread, mine is only so-so. But for the last few years, none has actually MADE it to St. Louis!

Plain old shortbread

Shortbread was my mother-in-law Gwendolen's specialty; she made it every Christmas, and was happy to share her recipe. I posted it on my blog, to my family's great delight.
