These weren't uttered during the holidays, but two gems from my now former mother-in-law: 1) Upon dropping by my house unannounced and hearing me apologize for it being messy, she said, "But it doesn't look any different than usual." and 2) Upon pulling on a pair of shorts she'd borrowed from me, she said, "I'll bet you never thought you'd have a mother-in-law who was smaller than you, did you?"

But now only my children have to deal with her when they visit their dad's family. And apparently she hasn't changed!

These are great recycling ideas for the holidays (or any day of the year really). My dad and I have been re-using wrapping paper for as long as I can remember. Aside from saving the earth, re-using bags, ribbons, and bows will also save money on buying gift-wrapping materials. My family always uses cloth tablecloth and napkins, and we have been saving out plastic food containers for years to re-use them as leftover containers. These are all lovely ideas. For some of my sweet soulsisters I'm making matchbox shrines. I can recycle tins and boxes I've been gathering all year, and use my stash of art supplies to make meaningful prettties. Each one will have a tiny blessing rolled up inside.

Crafting as Therapy

This is what got me into crafting. It gave me an outlet when I was younger and in a better financial place (no kiddo's or hubby to feed back then-lol). Now it's morphed into financial therapy. Especially with the holidays upon us, I feel like I have more financial control when I craft. Less money spent on gifts=More money in our bank account!

I'm planning on tea and coffee themed gifts utilizing free samples and Goodwill tea & coffee cups. A chocolate peppermint dipped biscotti with a recipe card will make a great gift for our neighbors. Also, I'm making some scented gel air fresheners, reed diffusers, etc with essential oils and jar gifts galore. I only wish I had a sewing machine-mine didn't survive our last move (bummer)!

Oh, I love the idea of putting your soul into gift-making. And thank you for the practical ideas. Last year, my kids and I made spiced instant coffee mix and lavender milk bath for gifts.

There was a lovely article in this month's Wondertime magazine about the "$100 holiday" - have you read that book? It always amazes me how the simplest gifts made with love are the ones that are most treasured.

The phrase "working mother" is redundant.
