There's some food for thought there. I say this as someone who lived at home while going to the local state university to get my liberal arts degree...at the time I was only getting that degree for my parents, because I didn't think it would be at all relevant to my life.

Which was probably pretty true.

I do think a stunning number of employers (or should I say their automated resume scanning programs) attach a ton of importance on a college degree...of any kind.

College = Bad Debt?

To me, college is as good as your first job. And let's face it, that first job is usually around 30/40K a year for liberal arts majors. More and more, I believe that college debt is bad debt. There are countless examples of successful people, multi-millionaires to be exact, that have created successful businesses and were not college graduates. (Can anyone say Bill Gates or Richard Branson?). Work ethic, passion and commitment has more to do with success than a college degree. Unless you truly desire to be a doctor or lawyer, or any other profession that requires a graduate degree, I would encourage young people to go to community college or a local state school, rather than going into immense debt to obtain a liberal arts degree from an expensive university.

I am happy that I started off life without any student loan debt. That gave me the freedom to save to buy multiple properties by age 30. Now, don't get me wrong, I believe education is invaluable, but you can always self-educate. Just remember, the school you go to doesn't determine the success you will have in life.
