I actually did not know that the Germans occupied the Channel Islands in WWII, let along did it for five years. That added an extra layer of interest to it for me.

"This book was like one of those awesome comforters your grandmother gives you. You can wrap yourself in it and feel warmed and loved all at once."

Yes, that's it. Add to it her giving you her secret stash of letters from when she was a girl and that's how it felt to read it.

When you are fighting to not read too fast and yet can't hold back. But I do love finding books that make me feel that way. Sometimes I'm able to console myself with the thought of a sequel or another book by the same author but unfortunately that won't happen in this case.

This book was like one of those awesome comforters your grandmother gives you. You can wrap yourself in it and feel warmed and loved all at once. It's incredible!

I love the richness of the characters, who seem so real I feel like they are my long lost friends. This is truly a great book. Thanks for recommending it!

I so enjoy finding a book that's so riveting I want to devour it whole. Sometimes when I'm reading greedily, I am mad at myself because I'm bringing the experience to an end too quickly - but I can't stop myself!

The apple tree was totally awesome

After I finished the book someone (who has not read it) asked me how I liked it. My response was "I want an apple tree!"

Her second novel has a magical book thing going on that I think will be a bit hit with book bloggers. I've already seen one bookish quote from it circulating.

And I completely don't remember you reading this which is really unusual.

... for the introduction. My mother saved plastic bags, glass jars (just the pretty ones) and so much more. My dad's companion now saves the liners from cereal boxes to wrap to-go sandwiches. So much from China is so cheap: when was the last time we darned a sock?

You'll be glad you read it. The popularity thing is hard. I've always been a black sheep. But, then I think about the days back in high school or college when I couldn't stand the cutest or coolest guy on campus just because he was popular. BUT, if he were by chance to notice me, then THAT might be a different story:)

My book club's next selection

Thanks kkoyers. This is my book club's next selection, so I just ordered it from Amazon. I am a little wary of any book that gets this much ecstatic praise and response...isn't that cynical of me :)

Sister,
I left a post on your blog. I loved this book. This was the last book I read before I was released from Federal prison camp. I too thought this book was written for me---ahh the power of a deeply personal GOOD book!
