Creating a data double

In this world of communication where whatever you give away about yourself is recorded and noticed, this is a very timely post.
How often do we ahve to make a profile about ourselves.
On your blog, on face book, on twitter, you name it, everywhere we need to say who we are.

I am referring to these impressions I am now creating as my *Data Double* and I am becoming more and more aware that it is I who create how others perceive me.

That is great but all this comes with a responsibility AND opportunity.

I need to observe what I have to offer and take responsibility of what I actually am capable of and learn to leave minimizing myself behind. Great learning and very important to eventually create a society in which we can release ourselves from oppression and go for who we really want to be.

Because when we declare who we are, we live into it.

Excellent advice

You're right - most women need to work on accepting praise and not minimizing themselves. I know I do!

Making your own boundaries

I'm sure you're not alone. One of the upsides of a 9-5 job, is that it gives you a structure. When you work at home, you have to create a structure for yourself. Working hours and non-working hours. Otherwise, it's so easy to feel guilty when you're not working and resentful when you are.

Why I want to go back to work

This article expresses exactly why I'd like to go back to a 9-5 job. Not being a mom, I have more freedom on this point because I don't have to balance any parental responsibilities. If I was, I'd probably value the flexibility more. But as someone without kids and working in a similar "flexible" fashion, I've found that it eats into all crazy times of the day and generally makes me feel stressed about spending time on myself.

Whereas when I was working 9-5 I didn't like my job (why I left), but I had time to explore my hobbies and not be at all pressured to work...because I wasn't at work.

And the frustration is, we

And the frustration is, we are arguing about the meaning of lipstick,
pigs, and the rest. Am I the only one who notices that RARELY are
commentators, candidates, talking heads or ANYONE talking about the
SOLUTIONS to our issues? No, we are talking about the STRATEGY of the
campaign—who said what, what they should say next, what they have to do
in the next week, etc—anything but how to fix the massive problems we
have. Scary thought, maybe it’s because no one knows how to fix the
problems. It’s like, it’s easier to answer email than figure out how
to fix that sticky problem that’s dogging you at work.

Amen. I am tired of people treating this like a game. It is not a game, it is your life and your kids' life and their kids' life and - not to be overblown about it - the future of the entire planet. Really, it is! So, can't we all at least give it the amount of serious attention we would the decision to sign a mortgage or hire a contractor?

Here are some resources I like:

The Middle Class

Project VoteSmart - you can look up the candidates voting records by issue and look at statements they made around that time, etc. Very useful. Actually made me really excited about Biden.

I went through McCain and Obama's economic plan line by line this week and I'm very worried about what McCain wants to do to this country, economically. I can't even get anyone to talk about it, but there's a very lively discussion going on about Michelle Obama's charitable credentials.

yes and no.

I am a serial lurker. I read a lot of blogs through google reader, because i read at work (don't ask) and can't comment.

the blogs I go back to constantly and comment on are the really good writers, people who touch my heart, or people whose recipe posts are so good i HAVE to try and cook them. (I'm a food blogger first you see)

most bloggers I find are NOT cliquey. but mommybloggers are more so. and food bloggers tend to clump by geographic region - so I look at all the beautiful SF Bay Area food bloggers, but we are never going to try each other's restaurants. And recipes rarely match because the ingredients are all wrong or out of season.

I do comment a lot on blogher, and find it very open and friendly...

and i don't get offended when people don't comment or visit - i'm always just pleasantly surprised when they do!

I think I have a recipe for that...

It's after 3pm here but I'm not sure if you are in a different time zone. My question is about whether there are any rumblings about how to enhance the image of older women, particularly in the entertainment industry. You may want to look at my first blog (I want to be an actor now that I'm grown-up_

I used to work in the cable industry, so I'm interested to see consolidation continue there...and their move more and more into content, not just infrastructure and the pipe.

I'm curious if Julia thinks cable companies will supplant movie and television studios as producers of original content.

We love these labels don't we?

Thank you, Erika. Women have been writers who work at home for years, not to mention women taking in laundry while keeping children at home, catering from home, etc. Yet today, we've got an acronym for that and everything else. We're so webified! LOL.

I think that more people will start telecommuting. Certainly the more progressive companies in the world promote telecommuting because they've found employees are happier and usually do more work not less. It's the fear that folks will stay home and goof off that causes some employers to resist telecommuting. You're lucky that both you and your husband have the advantage of working from home.
