free produce exchange

This is a little off topic but similar. There is a group called Hillside Produce Cooperative. Once a month they get together with their extra produce and do a little swap so everyone gets some of everything everyone brought. Its a great idea to share what you won't use and end up with a great bag of home grown food!!! The website is hillsideproducecooperative.org. Our next exchange is this Saturday Oct. 17th!!!

Rural Fruit Gleaning

Before I moved to our little farm, I'd been known to stop and pick apples from volunteer trees along the roadside. I can't stand to see food go to waste! It's great to hear that I'm not the only one.

With just the two of us an the dog (who admittedly loves apples), we can't keep up with what our trees produce. I'll start looking for places to donate our excess.

Life on the farm: http://haphazardhomestead.blogspot.com/

More fruit than most can use

I, too, was the recipient of loads of fruit this year, and for that I am very grateful. I like to try new recipes, especially when canning, and receiving a bounty of test material is always a treat. And sharing the experiments with the grower is great - sometimes they are amazed to see what their fruit can morph into.

Aside from being totally a fun notion

I think this is truly important. There is so much food that goes to waste simply because people don't tend to their trees, or don't know what to do with it when they do harvest their fruits. I love the idea of giving the well-gotten goods to food banks as well. What better way to put a dent in hunger in your own community?

Hi Kelly, Sara and Lucinda,

Thanks for all of your alternative gift ideas!

As someone who likes to cook I am particularly attraced to your idea, Lucinda. I've given bags of homemade granola as gifts before and people seem to appreciate it.

We often give the gift of food.

My husband is a fishing guide so we get our share of salmon. We have given away fresh, frozen or canned salmon depending upon the time of year. Or berries from the garden, cookies we have made, jam we have canned. Anything like that and it is always appreciated because it's something that person may not usually get.

Gift Certificates

My husband and I both like recieving gift certificates as presents. I know they sometimes get a bad reputation, because some people believe that it means you don't know the persons likes and dislikes well enough to pick out something specific. But to us, a gift certificaye is something we can use on what we want when we want, which is nice when we have a bunch of presents to enjoy at one time and could really use something we can save for later. For keeping the amount of stuff in the house down, iTunes gift certificates and gift certificates to restaurants we like are great. If we know the person giving the gift also likes that restaurant, we're usually happy to bring them along when we go to spend it.

I'm happy with any kind of gift that shows the giver is really thinking of me. For my last birthday, my parents gave me a DNA test for our beloved mixed breed dog and my music junkie dad gave me a personalized mix CD. Neither takes up much room, but both made me very happy.

My friends and I don't give each other birthday gifts. We're grownups, we have everything we need - there's really no need for gifts. We do take each other out for a nice dinner.

My Mother's Day Donation is for Homeless Pets

My 93 year old mother declared "no gifts - make a donation." I plan to donate to our local animal shelter. Through my mother I learned how animals enrich our lives, from the wild birds she has always fed, to the long list of pets of various species that were part of our family. She taught me to love all creatures great and small.
