Powerful

Positive affirmations are powerful. I am sure everyone has tried them and felt their power, even unconsciously. My problem is that sometimes I forgot to use them. Can you believe that? Also it takes some efforts to get started but it is worth so much!

Negative thinking on the other hand seems so easy and like natural. Actually it is not but as you said, it's been ingrained since childhood, so we just go with it. Now imagine redirecting all this energy that you use for your negative thinking towards affirmations, what a tremendous change it would produce after a while.

Agreed

I completely agree with you. For me The Alchemist from Paulo Coelho started it all. It opened new doors that I couldn't see before. It lead to re-energization and of course better health. Although I have to say that sometimes I got into higher vibrations (I don't know exactly how to describe it) and fell hard.

Nonetheless an inspirational book always lifts you up!

I change my hero everyday

I really do change everyday :)

Kaira, I like when you say that heroes don't need to be celebrities. There are so many inspiring people that I cannot stick with one. But the added advantage is that I get renewed inspiration everyday!

(and by the way, they are all on my blog)

More commonalities and tones

It's interesting that many of the women who left comments here mention the violence done to their Barbies. When I read about heads being popped off, it reminded me of the people I knew who nibbled on Barbie's feet and ultimately hobbled her. I wouldn't lump short hair cuts into that category, but I also cut off at least one doll's hair to make her into a "punk." (I also outlined her eyes with silver glitter paint and made her a giant star earring. She became the best Barbie ever.)

As I wrote the post, I also thought about what, if anything, Barbie meant to girls of color. It's interesting that Anali's parents would not let her have one. Now that Barbie comes in two colors, I wonder if girls who grew up in a more "diverse" era had the same experience.

Off with their heads

I was a tomboy and my favorite thing to push was my older sister's freak button, an the best way to do that was to take the heads off her barbies and hide them.

I just recently found an old shoebox with her barbies...

and of course one was missing her head

I called my sister and we had an awsome laugh over it!!

Diahann Carroll - Julia

Being an African-American kid in the late 60's - early 70's, my parents wouldn't let me have a white Barbie doll. So the doll that I most remember was the "Julia" Barbie doll based on Diahann Carroll.

I loved the show Julia with Diahann Carroll and was so excited when I got the doll. But like any kid, my little brother used to pull her head off and I'd have to put her back together again.

Oh, for want of a Ken doll

I never had a Ken doll. To this day I remain jealous of those who did. ;)

I let my own daughter play with Barbies. I share the same reasoning as Blog O' Beth. I don't think she can overshadow me. I remember enjoying her as a child and I don't think I bear lasting damage, so banning her outright seems harsh. As an adult, though, I don't really like her.

The only deviant thing I ever did with my Barbies was giving them an ultra-short haircut.

I do think Barbies can cause great damage to a young girl's body image.

Hello Patty...what a good mom you are. Our kids never outgrow their need for us. Good for you, for realizing your value to your grown children : ) The more you think about it, the longer your personal value list will grow!

Give yourself credit.

Something I don't give myself enough credit for is that I'm always available to my daughters. They are full fledged adults, but know they can call at any hour of the day or night and I will listen. Everybody needs someone they can "vent" to about life's ups and downs without fear of criticism. It's taken me a long time to realize that without criticism is the most important part.

Affirmations are amazing

I love them, they are so 'healthy' for your brain - especially since we dont monitor every single thought we have (which lets negitive ones creep in). Doing brain and soul feeding affirmations regularlly can change yr life. Make it a routine - ie. when brushing yr teeth say them in yr head as u look into the mirror, or always at the traffic lights or on the loo - just make sure you do them!

How I destress

Well, besides yoga! :) I've always written positive quotes and Bible verses down and stuck them everywhere - inside my daytimer, inside the cabinet door where my vitamins are, on the side of the file cabinet next to my desk. In fact that is one reason I started my What I Learned Teaching Sunday School blog - it's a place to not only keep the lessons I've written and taught, thoughts I've had about Christian books, concerts, etc. but to keep all the great quotes and things I've been collecting.

Then that spilled over to my print on demand store and I've got positive and Christian t-shirts and gifts and just started a section of rectangular magnets with uplifting quotes on them. It's a little overboard, but it really helps me to be surrounded by them, so if I start to get down I don't have far to look to read something that will lift me up.
