It Hurts Like Hell

First, my condolences! I recently lost two dogs within eight months of each other. It was completely heartbreaking. Thankfully time does seem to heal these losses. I still think of these incredible creatures every day but more and more it is with affection instead of sadness. They will live on in my heart forever.

You sound like a great mom to Peter & Lucky. I just came from the animal shelter, just to cheer myself up, and nearly came home with Thom, a border collie. However, I also came home with the ashes of Simone, my cat.

Dunno. Guess I'm just not ready yet but I am looking forward to my next pride & joy.

My kitty, Buddy just turned 11 and I've had him since he was kitten. It seems so unfair that by the time we are able to really communicate and they are very much a part of our family, that we will lose them and it will be painful.

I'm sorry for your loss and I'm glad that you are opening up that spot in your heart to love another animal who will, I'm sure offer much needed love and support in your life.

I started my blog as I was dealing with the death of my beloved dog. I lost my Holly in April of 2007 and I still miss her terribly. Pets bring so much joy to our lives and ask for so little in return. Thank you for sharing your story.

my peter is gone too

He died a year and a half ago. He was my 10 year old german shepherd. He had a tumor in his leg that turned out to be cancer. I know how hard it can be. I still miss my dog. But, I've got a great new baby boy Lucky who is my 3 year old black cat. I got him last year and he is my pride and joy.

It helped to write here after I lost Punkin in March and I hope it's been good for you too.

I still hate it, will always hate it. I fully expected him to live forever in spite of all intellectual understanding to the contrary. I'm not in the right place or space to get another pet, but I hope I have that in my life again someday. It was one of the best choices I ever made.

Can't wait to see what kind of dog you get.

How wonderful to know you were the proud owner (companion?) of an animal that brought so much happiness to people. I will say Desdemona mostly tortured everyone she came in contact with, but I didn't love her any less.

I think you're going to enjoy being a dog owner by the way. Wow, it's different than a cat. Do you know you actually have to walk them? It's true! I learned that when I got one.

Wow, CC, you and your family have really been through the wringer on this. I'm so sorry for all these goodbyes! I think it is great though that you took in a blind old kitty who got one more best friend before she left this Earth.

Even though it is painful to say goodbye, I do think we are better for having these cross-species bonds of love. Your son sounds like a real sweetheart too. I think he'll have many pets throughout his life.

I totally agree with your reaction. I think we can be close with pets in ways that are not possible with humans. It's almost like having a furry extension of yourself that just so happens to like barfing on the carpet. This requires deep, deep love.

Looking forward to the dog. I realize it will require more of me but I'm up for the challenge. Will probably get a doomed mutt from the pound - again, similar to my own adoption.
