I say besides Strom
I say besides Strom Thurmond, David Duke, and Jesse Helms. There is the Southern strategy; this insistence that everything is the fault of the poor, that affirmative action is a way of hiring unqualified people instead of a way of promoting diversity. Even Collin Powell has pointed out that he benefited from affirmative action. Never mind that there are the Sean Hannitys, Rush Limbaughs oh and Obama waffles showing up at a value voters summit for three days before someone thinks it is not a good idea. Then there is this insistence that abortion is the greatest evil we need to fight against when we have children living in unspeakable circumstances. But the argument is they just need to pull themselves up by their bootstraps when half of them didn’t even get the boots.
I think you need to do some more research of your beloved democratic party. You produced 3 light weights in the republican party's history (Thurmond, Helms and Duke) , and I guess you are using that as proof that the republicans are racist? You should ask yourself who opposed slavery, I will give you a hint it was not the democrats. In fact which party was created specifically to end slavery, again it was not the democrats. More questions, which party passed affirmative action, passed the first civil rights, and all major civil rights bills since? Another hint, not the democrats. How about this, which party was responsible for Jim Crow laws and is tightly linked to the KKK? Perhaps you would like to know which party is CURRENTLY home to a former very very powerful KKK member? Any clue, guess what not the republican party? Which party did Martin Luther King, JR support? I could go on for days about your beloved democratic party...but I will let you do some of your own research.

I mean seriuosly, most whites, agree you are free to vote for whichever party/person you desire and for whichever reason you choose..and while i personally know you would have voted for the democrat no matter what, and it had nothing to do with Obama's color that is not the point..you vote democrat because blacks would call you an uncle tom if you did not and that is the way it is.

It will be such a different presidency with this man.

Direct and clear communication, clear and intelligent thought and his growing number of advisors seem equal to him. This gives much hope.

Kind regards,

A Good Sign For The Future

Hi Chaka,

It's a good sign for the future that so many young people are invested in politics right now because of Obama. And I agree, the people who aren't using technology yet need to be remembered as well.

Who knows? Obama's election may get people involved in technology who might not have felt a need to be before.

It's True About Twitter and YouTube

All of a sudden it seems like Twitter and YouTube have been around forever.

And yes, several BlogHers wrote posts about the whole Motrin ad thing. If you do a BlogHer search (upper right hand corner of this page) for "Motrin" you'll see them.

I'm so excited about Obama's presidency-- and I agree, he is quite savvy in his use of media to promote his agenda and keep the public informed.

Funny how only a few years ago, YouTube was only a geeky new thing, and now it's being leveraged by the White House. BTW, did you see the recent articles about moms using Twitter and YouTube to make Motrin pull an ad?

Hi Giyen,

Though it's early days yet, I think you're right. Obama's making all the right moves so far to consolidate his authority while still reaching across the aisle.

I also think it's great that he's going to continue the use of social media to stay in touch with the public.

Obama needs to keep that dialogue going

It's very interesting to see Obama not try and reinvent the wheel.
For all of the liberal leftist rhetoric that the McCain camp was
throwing at him during the campaign, Obama is being very conservative
in his approach to governing thus far - I am glad to see him contemporize what has worked in the past rather than try risky strategies at this crucial time.

What exactly is the "elite media?"

Anything besides Fox and Rush? Just wondering. Could you define how it is "elite" and who it is?

Also, regarding B.O., I was taken in by his obvious intellect and demeanor. One can't say he just reads a teleprompter well, as he writes his own speeches and his words give some of us great hope. We haven't had really strong braintrust at the helm in a while now.

He was president of the Harvard Law Review, nominated by CONSERVATIVES who later confirmed they had chosen correctly. That says something. He brought a very fractured student body together and brought sound reasoning to the table.

I'm not looking for a "savior," myself. Just a smart person who can get along with people and make good decisions.

KeegsMom blogs at:
KIDSFLIX

My $0.02

I'm not a huge fan of Sarah Palin but I do think she was treated horrendously by both the elite media pre-election and by the GOP powers that be post-election.

McCain lost because the majority of Americans were gullible enough to be taken in by Obama's "cult of personality". People are angry about the way things are in the country and looking for a savior. I suspect that many of them will come to regret their votes when it becomes clear that Obama is unable to live up to the hype about him.

I think the discriminations

I think the discriminations the Italians and Irish got is probably similar to what we see today against people of Hispanic origin. They're considered an outside threat, with strange ways and strange customs and "stealing our jobs." They were ghettoized but eventually became mainstream.

The legacy of slavery lends itself to a different form of discrimination. It's not the "immigrant problem," it's something else. There are definitely similarities--people being denied jobs, getting racial slurs, not being served in restaurants, but there's a different power structure. Only a few extremists would think it was a good idea to send black people to Africa, whereas that's always comming up with immigrants, for instance. Instead there's a much more ingrained set of assumptions/discriminations with a different history.

They put a joe sixpack

They put a joe sixpack hockey mom in Prada, hoping the sparkle and
bling would blind people. It did, some. Didn't they think the story
would see light of day? Didn't they realize what kind of message that
would relay about what they really think of hockey moms and about their
own priorities (e.g., materialism, wealth)?

Much more successful strategy would have been to spend $15,00 at
Macy's on the family. That'e enough. Even Wal-mart moms shop
occasionally (or dream of shopping) at Macy's, and understand the need
to polish a public image. But Sak's? $100K, or $150K, or even more as
is rumoured? Wow. They just went over the GOP top with this one.

Absolutely! Amen!

How could ANY thinking politician dress like a movie star during the worst economic crisis of our lives, then proceed to talk all folksy and present herself as down-with-the-people?

Sarah Palin invited the ridicule, by not knowing any better.

McCain lost because he had nothing positive to offer

MichelleSBOS, you cited some reasons he lost, but one of the main reasons, IMHO, is in my subject line. He only attacked BO, over and over again, and had nothing positive, no real message, no plan of action that spoke to the American people. He was negative, negative, negative. And where BO showed cool and calm, McCain was all over the emotional map.

Southern Girl's point above is so true, and speaks to the clothing debacle:

Republicans like to claim to be everyman and the party of joe-sixpack
and the hockey moms of the world but in truth you want them no where
near the top of your party. These are people you want in the voting
booth scared of the other guy not out there thinking they too can be
president one day.

They put a joe sixpack hockey mom in Prada, hoping the sparkle and bling would blind people. It did, some. Didn't they think the story would see light of day? Didn't they realize what kind of message that would relay about what they really think of hockey moms and about their own priorities (e.g., materialism, wealth)?

And the truth about Palin needs to come out, so we can put her to rest. She is simply not VP or -- heaven forbid -- presidential material. She needs to get her ego in check.

I dont know about you, but I want my crew in the White House to be about ten times smarter than me. At least.

Why do we have to keep saying it?

Why do people have to be constantly reminded that Sarah Palin did NOT ask for, shop for, or pick out any of the clothes that are being talked about. Not only I simply do not care anymore-THEY LOST-I really wish people would get over it; this was not her doing. For those who want to make something out of it, complain to the RNC and stop dogging Palin for it.

As far as the way women in politics are treated, it is abhorrent. I am tired of being marginalized; I am tired of feeling like my values are not being represented; I am tired of candidates who don’t actually stand for anything. I like Sarah Palin, but I would not presume to know if she will be the next GOP candidate or not. I WOULD presume to know that it was more than refreshing to finally have a candidate stand for something, to have actual conservative policy and to actually stand for it without shame or reservation. It is completely ridiculous for anyone in McCain’s campaign to blame Palin or try to hold her feet to the fire over issues that have NO BEARING at all on policy. McCain lost because he was soft on anything that matters to a conservative voter. McCain lost because he actually took a stand on very little. McCain lost cause he was like soaking wet wood-soft and spongy with no ability to provide a stable base to build your life on.

Finally, I would just like to point out that even if every single accusation of Palin was true (at this point, it has become increasingly clear that none were) people who concentrate on that are missing the point. How unprofessional and disgusting is it that so called leaders and their staff at that level would say those things to anyone? And please don’t try the argument that “we deserved to know”. Ummm why is that? THEY LOST. Nothing that was “revealed” has any bearing on moving forward. It’s petty and 5th grade-ish. I agree: who’s the diva? The next Presidential election is 4 years from now; if there are actual issues that need to be discovered about Palin, I have every confidence the media will dig them up between now and then without relying on this tripe trash.
