Wonderful interview

As a woman whos day job is in the tech field myself and someone who is very interested in SEO, website creation internet applications, this interview was a great and enjoyable read. It was really encouraging to hear from a pioneer in the industry. It was also great to hear how involved she still is with her company, as some CEOs can loose touch as their business becomes successful.

Thank you for taking the time to do and transcribe this interview!

Wishing you a Wonderful Day,
Corinne Brueckner
corinne@fragrantfuture.com
Gourmet Candle Store : www.corinnescandles.com

Hi Virginia

great to see Jill interviewed -- I've watched her expertise and business grow since first meeting her on the late lamented LED Digest list in 1997, and she has always been my reference for SEO.

She always talks good sense -- I am 100% with her on her last comment!

Veronica
http://www.larecettedujour.org/

A couple of comments

Melanie, thanks so much for sharing this!

A couple of clarifying comments:

1) I am not aware of any screen reader software for people with disabilities that needs both alt and title attributes, and most won't even notice the title attribute. The alt is the standard for providing alternative information for a graphic, the title attribute should be used to provide additional information if you so desire. The alt should be short and to the point, the title can be a good place to add some extra SEO juice.

2) I am not aware of any blogging software except LiveJournal that doesn't use some level of heading tags for post titles in its default templates. If you have a designer that has written your templates from scratch and decided not to use them, you might be in trouble, but otherwise your blog likely already uses heading tags.

Alt & Title Tags

I've written about what these tags are and why you should use them in the article What are the “alt” and “title” tags in the img src tag? Do I need to use them?

I hope that helps!

Thanks, Melanie. This post offers really useful suggestions. I will be returning to make sure I garner every bit of info I can use. One tip I do not understand, if you could explain...."Use the "alt" and "title" attributes in your image and link tags."

Thanks for the info on bounce backs

I had never heard of bounce backs but frankly it makes sense. Everything else is tallied and counted why not how many times you hit "back"? I use the back button all the time, now I'll think twice it.

Important takeaway with bounce rates

Hi Roxanne,

Google Analytics tracks actual bounce rates, but that isn't going to help you much because I suspect that it is the relative bounce rate for the search term that affects placement. The important takeaway with bounce rates is that the SEs are rewarding quality, appropriateness, and ease of use. Here's an example. Bloggers are more and more frequently posting huge image files and super long entries, without regard for the time it takes to load that page and the fact that many people have monitors with pretty small resolution. So If someone with not the best connection, either dial up or crappy DSL, and not the state-of-the-art monitor clicks on a a link to a site with huge images, they are going to quickly lose patience and click the back button. Or if the site is hard to read, too busy with flashing ads and bright colors, that will get people to click the back button. Site design and navigation becomes more important when bounce rates are taken into consideration.

I never thought about using "click here" instead of making the terms specific to what I was linking too. Thanks so much for bringing that to my attention. I'll never do another "click here" again! :)
