Yes, Anna, it can test for most elements-cadmium, bromine as a measure of brominated flame retardants, antimony, including in fabric, mercury, chromium, etc.!

Ths is a great post. Are the plastisol inks the ones that contain PVC in them or is this different? Or is this an additional issue?

I find tags in general irritating to my skin. I wonder if they are printed using this type of ink?

Heavy metals

This is a terrific article. Everyone living in a house or apartment which is built before 1978 should have their dwelling tested for lead paint.

SmartMama, is there a way to have your children tested for all those heavy metals and if they have high levels, to reduce them?

Does it test heavy metals in fabrics as well especially antimony in polyester fabric?

Just when you thought it was safe to go into the water? Anna www.green-talk.com

Kids' Clothing Needs Certified Standards!

Diane MacEachern www.biggreenpurse.com Diane@biggreenpurse.com

This is truly disturbing: yet another chemical threat our poor little kiddies face.

It also speaks to the need for clothing manufacturers to get their products certified sustainable. If the clothes had to go through a life cycle assessment, a problem like this would have been caught right off the bat. The kids would be spared, as would the environment. Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

Well, the Twin Cities weren't on the list (although they should be) but of the three finalists I love St Louis. :)

High humidity, that is. Can you claim the same thing, St. Louis? How 'bout you, Philly? We're talking July here!

Didn't think so.

I hope it's in Philly. It's a beautiful city, convenient to many BlogHer members who live in the East Coast, and much less expensive than New York or Washington.

I just find I have days when

I just find I have days when what is right and what is wrong is very murky. And what is right by me, is wrong by someone else. Or i could do the right thing by my husband, or the right thing by my mother, but not both.

That's when I find it helps to focus on the small blessings.

I think I have a recipe for that...

Happiness

Happiness doesn't exist 24/7. If you are chasing happiness all your life, ultimately you will be unhappy. Life has its up and downs and you need to accept both in order to be in harmony with the universe. The universe is full of opposites, and without ying, the yang doesn't exist. If you keep this in mind, and simply live your life in a positive way and to the best of your abilities, you will find happiness through peace and acceptance. I agree that doing what is right will definitely guide you on the right path. GreenKristine

Path to Happiness

This may sound trite, but I really believe it comes down to doing the right thing. Keep doing the right thing, even if you aren't always sure what that is and you can be happy. When you make choices you know are wrong, just to get through the day, the week, whatever that is where the downfall lays. For me at least. Since I have made that resolution I am happy. Is life perfect? No. Do I lose sight sometimes? Yes. At the end of they day if I didn't comprise myself or my beliefs I don't wake up with knots in my tummy, worrying about what I have done or things I cannot control.

How about greening the, ahem, sanitary supplies?

Great list. I would add green your towels next time you replace them with organic natural fiber treated without harsh chemicals, green your dental floss, and, green your sanitary supplies, if you use them. Conventional pads and tampons are bleached and full of plastic - try using organic cotton, unbleached pads. Or, go for the Diva Cup or similar re-usable cup. Although, I frankly admit it, I haven't gone for the Diva Cup yet . . . but it isn't about perfection, right? Right? Can I use the Marina IUD instead?

Never Clean Your Bathroom Again!

Now THAT would be pretty green.

Seriously, though, one of the greenest things we can do is to lower our standards. Not to accept pee on the floor but to be okay with a shower every other day. With a bath once or twice a week for the kids. To give up some of the products. To realize that a damp rag cleans pretty darn well.
