love the local

Hello!

That's funny -- my son wanted to be held all the time, too! And he refused to sleep alone. Now he's a very independent, though still cuddly, four-year-old. It gets easier.

I love eating locally and post recipes on my blog, What I Made for Dinner (ack link function isn't working on my laptop, so http://whatimadefordinner.blogspot.com). I just went to a strawberry luncheon featuring grilled lamb with a strawberry sauce! Kind of a complex dish for a family with a newborn, though.

If I were you, I'd start out simple: snack on the local strawberries, which you can probably wash one-handed ;) Have one of those free-range eggs poached for breakfast with whole-grain bread from your local bakery.

If you have a little more time to cook, or if you can get someone else to cook for you, asparagus buckwheat crepes are pretty good.

Sautee mushrooms and chopped asparagus with garlic in olive oil, thyme, salt, and a leetle red wine. Set aside.

Combine 1/2 cup water 1/2 cup buttermilk, 2 eggs, 1/4 cup buckwheat flour, 1/3 whole wheat flour, 1/4 t salt, 1 1/2 T melted butter. Let batter sit at least 1/2 hour.

Ladle batter into hot, buttered pan, making sure it spreads to all sides. Cook, then flip. Add some of the asparagus mixture to the center, top with grated local cheese, fold over crepe, and enjoy!

Crepes take a little practice, so make sure everyone is in a good mood, first.

Homebirth

Given my family history of very very short labor, homebirth looked like a good option to me. After working with an OB that got upset and harassed me for refusing an amnio, I called a local homebirth CPM/ By this time the OB was talking about a planned c-section because the baby was going to be 'too big'. I thought that was stupid as my mother birthed a 9 pounder who was breech - she is 4 foot 10 in , so I wasn't worried. My mom worked with the original doctors in the 60s that advocated natural birth (names witheld to proctect privacy).

My 8# 10oz son was born in under 90 min, from first contraction to placenta - first child. Since there were no regular contractions, there is no way I would have made it to the hospital - a full 45 min drive.

I fully believe that childbirth should be attended. For me and my family, homebirth is the safest option to ensure that our babies are not born unattended. We haven't had a labor over 2 hours back three generations.

Sigh heard 'round the world

I was dreading returning from vacation this week and having to admit failing at some of my goals. We spent the last week in New Zealand which is one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited. The contrast between daily life here in Shanghai and there could not be more extreme. While IT was a perfect vacation, I was not so perfect on vacation. The Sauvignon Blanc would not leave me alone and on our three day sailing trip (www.ecocruz.co.nz) they fed us the most delicious meals that absolutely required second helpings, not to mention the fact that I caught the tuna that the sushi was made from so I should eat LOTS of it!So thanks for not asking for more promises this week. I am going to reward myself by not counting the last week and move on as if I haven't missed a single workout session or consumed an extra calorie.

red leather and my vagina

"Because He Liked To Look At It" reminds me of the journey to self-acceptance that seems never ending for me. I cry as I remember a time that I believed a red leather couch more beautiful and palatable than my vagina.

I am growing to love and respect my vagina more each day, yet the process is not always easy or intuitive. However, over the years I have come to understand that my vagina can buy as many red leather couches as she wants.

The problem with "More"

This is such a great community - thank you Kristen. (Most hilarious boob post brought me here!)

The problem with "More" is that it is never attainable! How will you ever accomplish "more"? I want to be a "better mom". How the @#*& will I ever know if I arrive? I don't know about you, but I love to arrive! More arriving the better, in fact. Actually, I could arrive all day long and be okay with that. lolol

I so LOVE the smart goals!! Especially Attainable!

I think those are great questions. Most people do not live in big cities, so access to all this good stuff we're supposed to eat is critical!

We're trying hard to get "off the grid"

of factory farming and agribusiness as much as possible, by learning to grow and preserve half of our own food this year (and if it goes well, maybe more next year), but since we do eat meat (granted, we're moving toward ONLY eating meat that we raise or hunt ourselves--and when I say "we" hunt, I mean my husband hunts), I don't imagine there would be a lot I could ask (or feel comfortable asking, anyway).

If there are tips about finding locally-grown produce, that would be helpful. People assume that if you live out in the country, there are just farm stands all over the place, and fresh produce is in abundance, but that just isn't the case. We only have large chain groceries and big-box stores--there are no greengrocers like you see in urban areas. Finding a clean source of grain is especially challenging to me. I don't at all mind grinding my own flour, but where to find the grain is always an issue.

I'm sure some of you non-vegans out there want to ask her questions about how to most ethically and environmentally shop, cook and eat if you're not quite ready for a plant-based diet, right?

I hereby promise to ask those questions in a completely objective reporter-like way!

"Can A Vagina Drive A Bus?"

Hi Denise,

That's the one that made me misty. Especially where she said:

I remember watching her in the wings of the stage in a friends arms,
knowing that she will grow up in a home where being a girl wasn’t
second best.

How cool is that?

Food and carbon footprints

My understanding is that it's really difficult to determine a carbon footprint for different foods because it depends on so many factors: water, fertilizer, transportation, packaging, location, and other factors.

Do you think we will ever be able to develop a way of knowing for sure which foods are really better for the planet?

The Big "D" Syndrome we need to deal with.

Thank for sharing your experience.I have been plagued with this "demon"for most of my lifeAnother "D" is Don't.It may be your mother, father, sister,or friend or whoever who help raise these demons inside us.It leaves me exhausted after the battle that I dont seem to have any energy left to to do what I wanted to do in the first place.I suppose we need the courage of conviction to beat down those demons, which you showed.Your post is very inspiring.Yesterday,I heard ,in a religious discourse from The Gita, that those who are closest to us are not aware of our Potential(&that includes ourelves).I feel like the eagle who thought she was a chicken, and was afraid to fly.I know Exercise/physical activity helps, but how do we sustain after the first few days?
