So many of the blogs

So many of the blogs (generally mommy blogs, sheesh) I read deal with depression of some sort. I always feel for these women, women who are talented, funny, articulate, but stuck in a very dark place. I leave reassuring comments when I feel they most need it. There was a blogger in particular who I was so fond of, she would yo-yo up and down, happy to sad. She refused to take medication but she always seemed to feel better after receiving many encouraging comments from her readers. She has since removed her blog and I wish I knew how she was doing. I hope she is okay and happy. In her case she had a supportive Internets, as do most of the blogs I read that are battling depression. They are lucky though, because there are always those troll lurking, waiting to suckerpunch you when you least expect or need it.

This topic has been on my mind, too.

I had a guest poster at my own blog last week, and she wrote on the subject of PPD. It was so incredibly well-received, with several women coming out of the woodwork to say "YES! Me too! And I've never told anyone!" That is healthy.

But then you hear about the Briggs story, and you know (and I know, because I've been there too) that when you're in a very dark place, one tear-down will bear so much more weight than a hundred affirmations.

The internet is what it is, I guess. I suppose all we can do is to build enough supportive communities that the odds are higher that a person in need will find a good one.

Thanks, it helps to know I'm not alone. As busy as life gets sometimes it is easy fo feel that way and not remember that millions of women have done this all before me.

you can do it. you really can.

Hi Mary,

Thank you for the link. Taking charge of your life is huge---remember that there is no such thing as a perfect anything. There are no perfect houses, perfect families, perfect moms, perfect jobs, or perfect marriages. That's what's fun about being a human! We are in control: we decide what needs to be tweaked this way or the other, and we can decide what works/doesn't work in our own particular life.

I'm proud of you. Feel free to email me at anytime, and I'll try my hardest to make up some sort of inspirational mumbo-jumbo to keep you motivated. :-) Life is a process and a journey; there is no destination.

Congratulations on the weight loss!

xoxo

The Feeling Is Mutual

My daughter is 6 months. She is my only daughter (two older boys) and I wanted and wished for her for so long. There are times when my happiness is so overwhelming I think I am placing too much on this precious baby girl and like you, if I hold too tight she might be taken away. I always laugh at the saying that God made babies cute for a reason, but its true. He also made a different kind of love for children, a painful love, an all consuming love that transcends all others. Being a mom hurts, but its a pain I will gladly endure.

An Inspiration in a Frighteningly Uncompassionate World

Phyllis, this world would be a much more disheartening place without you. I'm so happy you survived because you've enlightened me to some important things in your book. I too have struggled with a past abusive spouse, loss of my house, having my world turned upside down...we live in a really narcissistic culture in the United States, nobody really cares when their fellow man (or woman) is hurt anymore. If they aren't the ones suffering then what does it matter to them? I find it surprising how many have lost their homes due to the housing crisis. I try not to be negative, because they are now suffering too, but I have to wonder if karma will continue to come back around for those who maybe didn't recognize the true need for others in their country. I love you most cuz you are real. I think the fake ones are hurting others in pure negligence and self-absorption. In my life I have a hard time keeping people out of my personal business. Now when they just have to ask...I ask 'em what their social security number is ;)

Thanks and keep publishing!

Now your addiction begins because blogging does get addictive. If you can, I encourage you to attend a blogher conference. It gives such validation!

I also found that the discipline of writing for my blog has carried over to the discipline of my essay and fiction writing.

Have you tried exercise?

I know, it sounds so trite and like you can't fit it in your schedule with everything else, but even scooping up your daughter for a quick walk around the block can help. Get yourself physically moving somehow.

Cutting out sugar can really help, too, and sleep - OMG a commitment to sleep will change your life if you can pull it off.

Hang in there, and I hope you feel better.

Choose Your Pleasures

For two weeks I have lived without pasta, rice and potatoes. But that sugary stuff, I need my occasional indulgence, otherwise, I won't withstand the temptation of a continuous bowl of pasta.

Choose your enemies and your friends. Choose what you can say no to, and stick to it, and choose your indulgencies, too.
