selling books to the internet

That's a good idea. I felt overwhelmed by both the idea of doing a garage sale and of trying to sell them one at a time on Amazon (or eBay for that matter), so once I had finished the "immediate cash" thing of schlepping bags of books in good condition to the used bookstores around here I was really happy to find that Powell's Books will buy them online. (and they pay for the shipping!) It's only store credit, but there are always more books I want to buy with that anyway ;)

As a former book buyer

who has downsized everything in life, including the book collection, I want to point out that you can sell books in good condition on Amazon for considerably more than you'd get selling them at a garage sale. At a time when many people are looking for ways to earn a little extra to cover the rising cost of gas and food, a large book collection is worth money.

Find your book on Amazon and click the button that says Sell Yours Here. You set up an account and start selling.

http://www.webteacher.ws/ http://first50.wordpress.com/

more pull on the government than the rest of the people.

currently there is no reason for the high gas prices...it is all politics and profitmaking

Why is Exxon-Mobile posting record breaking earnings?

Exxon Mobile posted a record breaking 12 billion in revenue. It does not cost as much as people think to refine the oil into gas. I believe in capitalism, however i believe that the oil companies are competing to lower prices. There is definate collusion and the government needs to step in.

Great advice!

I was never a coupon user, heck..I never even used one coupon in my life. Now I'm rethinking the whole thing - it's definitely worth it. I wouldn't go overboard on coupon usage, but why not save money if you can? Hm...maybe I'll post something about coupons!

Thanks for the great advice everybody!

We're trying hard to get "off the grid"

of factory farming and agribusiness as much as possible, by learning to grow and preserve half of our own food this year (and if it goes well, maybe more next year), but since we do eat meat (granted, we're moving toward ONLY eating meat that we raise or hunt ourselves--and when I say "we" hunt, I mean my husband hunts), I don't imagine there would be a lot I could ask (or feel comfortable asking, anyway).

If there are tips about finding locally-grown produce, that would be helpful. People assume that if you live out in the country, there are just farm stands all over the place, and fresh produce is in abundance, but that just isn't the case. We only have large chain groceries and big-box stores--there are no greengrocers like you see in urban areas. Finding a clean source of grain is especially challenging to me. I don't at all mind grinding my own flour, but where to find the grain is always an issue.

I'm sure some of you non-vegans out there want to ask her questions about how to most ethically and environmentally shop, cook and eat if you're not quite ready for a plant-based diet, right?

I hereby promise to ask those questions in a completely objective reporter-like way!

Food and carbon footprints

My understanding is that it's really difficult to determine a carbon footprint for different foods because it depends on so many factors: water, fertilizer, transportation, packaging, location, and other factors.

Do you think we will ever be able to develop a way of knowing for sure which foods are really better for the planet?

Wake up shoppers!

I am surprised at how little people pay attention to what they but, how much it is, and the price differences among brands and sizes. Thank you for putting it into writing for the blind to see.

Milk alone has gone up at least ten percent, which is a lot if you buy whole organic milk for your toddler in half gallon sizes (almost $4 a pop!). I watched food network the other night and saw a site, www.grocerygame.com. It offers coupons, right times to stock up, etc. Worth the vist. Thanks!

Cook

I want to second your tip. Cooking "real" food instead of ordering out or buying prepared meals is a great money saver. Also, instead of bottled water, I bought a water filter for my tap. Water tastes really great and the filter is waaay cheaper than any bottled water.

Food is one thing you should spend money on

I so agree with Judith's comment above. Of all things to spend money on...clothing, flat-screen TVs, lottery tickets...wouldn't food always have to be the one thing worth spending money on?

NPR recently did a show about the rising cost of food due to price hikes on corn. Since corn is in practically everything sold at the grocery store, that makes sense. I'm sure fuel costs are also a factor. But the solution is not, as NPR's guest suggested, to buy cheap food at the Dollar Store. It doesn't matter what magic you can make with a can of green beans – that's not good nutrition.

To cut costs, why not skip on costly meats and processed food? Grains sold in bulk like brown rice and quinoa are delicous and will feed you for pennies a day. Combined with locally grown organic vegetables, you'll have great meals and avoid the corn and fuel consumption issues. Eat better, eat cheaper. It's a win/win.

http://doesabodygood.blogspot.com
