You Know I Have Major Problems About Being Brief?

There is a lot more to the story. I can say that I was fascinated. It was like looking at another planet for the first time. I did see a pregnancy anatomy image with a baby. I was a good reader but didn't comprehend that sperm business.

As for teen info and sex I got a bunch of things to say. I know parents won't like my views. (Psst, your kids will have sex no matter what you tell them. You might be able to delay but you will not stop them.)

I'll hop on over to your blog and check out the action.

Superb Post

Your raise good points - I believe in information at a child's level of understanding and at (and sometimes beyond) a parent's comfort level.

I want the rest of the story. Please tell us about what you were thinking when you found that book.

Librarians rock. I wrote a tribute to the Boston Pubic Libraries recently on my blog (and here).

I also have a post Real Questions to Discuss with Teens about Sex. It's actually in the top 5 entires that have been visited on my site. Would love to know what you think about the latter.

That's why libraries are so important

I guess that's why libraries are so important. They carry most titles, that way we can figure out what we want to pick from their shelves.

I love Atticus too.

I Fell In Love With Atticus in The Book Then The Movie

I would hang with Boo Reilly too but I would probably freak him out.

I am ready to pitch a fit if anybody tries to yank that book. Now that is not the correct response but it was not just a story to me but a way of entering that southern world.

To be clear there are African Americans who don't like the book and there are European Americans who don't like the book.

To each his/her own but leave that book up on the shelf.

Kids are smarter than we think

Great post, Gena. I checked out Annoyed Librarian and will be going back. My parents used to tell me that I came from the pumpkin patch. With my son (who, like you, has been asking questions his whole life) we'd tell him as much as we felt he could absorb, and sometimes we tell him we'll tell him later, if we think the subject matter is just too much for him at the time.

This is an interesting issue. One person's idea of offensive may not be another's, and when you look at some of the usual suspects on the banned book lists, it's mind-boggling. When people start talking about controlling information, the hair on the back of my neck starts to stand up. You've also got to wonder why they want to ban the book. I guess social issues can feel threatening to some, but "To Kill A Mockingbird"? "Tom Sawyer"?

My son has had his library card since he was 3 and we're regulars. He's pretty much stayed in the kids' section, though, and I've never seen anything that I thought was objectionable there.

Growing up, I just picked books off my mom's shelves and I never heard a word. She would complain, though, if she saw any of us girls reading "trashy romance novels."

I was a questioning kid as well. My mom's wish for me came true and now I have 2 of them. So the public library and the internet is our friend. We go the the library often with a list of questions and the librarians are always helpful and gracious. My children all had libray cards at 3. They love the power of that card. My daughter used to call it her book credit card.

Oddly, I was never curious about where babies came from. 'Mummies tummies' was enough information. But I could tell you all about photosynthesis when I was 5.

Yay for librarians!

Could it be more confusing?

That's why we're working to get the SMaRT Sustainability Standard into place, to take the confusion out of the market. As you noted, even Bamboo isn't sustainable if diversity is removed from the forest to plant more.It will always come down to a full Life Cycle Assement of the entire chain of custody.

Of the things you mention, only Marmoleum is certified as Sustainable in a process that has been through a Life Cycle Assessment and audited by Ernst and Young.

Reclaimed wood is going through a similar process of certification as well. If you reclaim wood from China and bring it here, is it still sustainable? Probably, but only an LCA including the transportation will tell us for sure.

Sustainable and Affordable Options...

are hard to find but are present. I don't know what state you are in but in parts of California there are "deconstruction" vendors who will sell wood from older structure and turn it over at a fair price.

This keeps good stock out of the land fills and creates employment options to a bunch of folks that need them.

The trick is to find them and transport the goods to where you need them.

It is possible. I guess that is when you tap into the "Green" Network.

I Think It Is Harder To Accept Sustainability Concepts

My grandmothers would contantly hound us to turn off the lights when not in the room. It cost money to have the lights switched on for no good reason.

Did they save energy? You Becha.

Did they do it out of concern for the planet? Nope. But it helped just the same. It will happen, there will be a shift in thinking.

I'm just not a patient as I thought I was.

Hold on, change is coming.

Sustainability: Will it last?

Get it? SUSTAIN-ability? Maybe the green trend will become a way of life once all the cool and hip, new and shiny wears off. I mean, it has to, right? We're running out of options.

And as for the affordability of green living, I'm with ya! My recently-purchased 55-year-old house desperately needs new flooring. I sure wish I could afford bamboo, cork or Marmoleum, or reclaimed wood. No! Wait! It turns out bamboo is not BFF with the environment. Could it get more confusing?

We're trying to find the middle path, and for us it means going solar in the family room, where we spend so many evenings. For my husband it's more about saving money, which is OK with me. Just a couple more years and those 3 days a week of riding his bike to work will mean we can actually afford bamboo sheets and eco-friendly underwear!

I think we should live more environmental responsible lives and have been doing so years before it was green=trendy=cool. I started living this way mostly as a money-saving measure. When I mention this in "green" circles, I'm denounced as a heretic. In their eyes I should be living Green solely for the environment. Why isn't it OK to save both money and the world? Why is it wrong to acknowledge that sometimes the "Greener" option is to keep the non-eco thing you've had for years (like my 4 year old kitchen appliances) and use it less/keep it forever? Why can’t I be considered Green without gotten rid of everything I own and buying a new "green" equivalent?

Trisha includes a link to her site in every post that she makes, and I believe the other CEs on the list also include a link to their websites in their signature lines. You can also find them linked towards the bottom of their topics pages in the "contributing editor" information.

And, you can also contact them via the contact us form in their basic profile.

Thanks for the recs! I've added Jennifer, Happyslip, and Zadi, but I need more info on the rest of them - specifically, what they do and what fields they're involved in. Trisha doesn't have her own website (or otherwise doesn't have it listed) so it's a bit difficult.

If you're on Lisa's list and you're reading this - please respond :)
