You can't possibly believe

You can't possibly believe that a mistress helped keep a marriage together, unless it was from the man's viewpoint. You can't possibly believe that the wives did not care, and more obsurdly because they were too tired to take care of their wifely duties, so they left it up to the mistresses.

The era that you are speaking about, left these women with no other choice, not only to earn a livelyhood from being a prositute or mistress, because their were no other opportunities for them, or to stay with a man who cheated, because they had no other form of support.

Women today don't put up with it, because the men are sloppier about it, but because they no longer have to live with, be supported by, and be degraded by a man.
