My skin hates me, this I have decided. Exfoliation and caution is perhaps the best advice. Thanks for the morning insight!

Wax on, wax off

Regardless of your hair removal method, here are some rules of thumb for avoiding the dreaded rash, razor bumps and ingrowns:

1) gently exfoliate that area every day. I use my Clariisonic face brush, and since I've started, I rarely get an ingrown--and I used to be plagued by them.

2) use an astringent such as Tend Skin (salycylic acid) or benzoyl peroxide when you start getting some grow in.

Also, another great hair removal technique: laser hair removal. It's expensive, about $1200 depending on whether you do American, French or Brazilian. It may not remove all hair permanently, and it's not suitable for people with lighter body hair. However, if you extrapolate how much money you will spend on waxing, shavers, astringent, shaving cream, etc. for the next three years or so, you'll see that you'll spend that anyway. I know many women who've had this done and swear by it. However, it is permanent, so if the 70's full bush ever comes back, you'll be out of luck.

I waed my eyebrows once. I broke out in a rash across my forehead/face and hurt like a b*tch. I was scheduled for a bikini wax that day and promptly cnaceled. Never again.

Only the British could get away with a commercial extolling the virtues of "mowing the lawn" - right down to the woman obsessively petting her, um, cat, and "tulips" on the mound!

Thanks for the giggles this morning :)

I am the opposite of natural

I'm all about shaving my vagoo. I think it's gross when it's unshaved, and REALLY itchy. Oddly enough, I've heard other women complain that it's itchy when it is shaved. Each their own?

I don't have a problem with men being encouraged to shave; I would totally enjoy it if my boyfriend shaved his armpits, and he does trim the little monster from time to time. The thing that goes wrong is when we say, "This is the ONLY way." Ordering men/women to shave/not shave is wrong. We should have a choice - I shave. You don't. Big deal.

On another note, I visited a tattoo parlor once with a friend who was getting her good girl pierced. The artist mentioned that she's had to turn people away for being too untamed. She didn't make fun of these people to their faces, but she sure as hell did behind their backs. So maybe your OBGYN is making fun of you - but let's hope they're far too sensible and professional to partake in such activities.

I can not tell you how many of my male friends are obsessing over their eyebrows.

I use a small, gentle brush to keep my brows in place. I use a "comb-over" gesture to cover any patchy areas and finish with a little gel or pomade to keep them in place. And then I'm DONE!

Thank goodness I'm not the only dirty hairy mom around ;-)

My eyebrows are straight and thick and haven't been shaped and waxed or even plucked for months. I've taken to scraping a nosehair trimmer on the spot at the bridge of my nose for fear they will start growing together. I shave my legs once a month if that. Showering even every other day is a luxury for me (and those who have to be close to me). I've gone longer, frequently. Unless I've run out of deodorant. Although I've been known to borrow my husband's in a pinch and then try to girl up the smell. Ick.

Finally about mother's day I just caved. I crumpled into a ball of dysfunctional and teary-eyed exhaustion, and so my husband presented me with a gift: A gift certificate for a nearby spa and one night in the hotel across the street from the spa - ALONE. He'd stay home with Bobbin. I checked in at noon, went for a 4 mile walk along the river trail, came back and showered, went to get my hair done, came back and ordered room service with a bottle of wine, relaxed in a tub full of bubbles, laid around in my bathroom on the kingsize bed watching bad pay-per-view movies, slept for 8 hours uninterrupted, and then woke up at 9am and, having fullfilled all of my many fantasies of time and solitude and relaxation that have been building up the past year, went home and thanked my husband and then washed the kitchen and dining room floors and did a load of laundry.

I highly recommend one night in a hotel if you can swing it - even if it is close by. Just make sure if you work outside the home that the hotel isn't hosting a conference for your company while you're staying there like there was at mine :-). I spent the first few hours worrying if someone I know would recognize me walking in and out, and wonder what reason I could possibly have for checking into a hotel for one night in the middle of the week... marital woes? ellicit affair? I got over it pretty quickly when the wine was finally delivered to my room.

I take a lot of heat for letting my daughter go whole-hog on the princess thing, but it's sad when the rest of the world makes a totally outdated view of womanhood look safer than the present one in some ways.

COULD NOT AGREE MORE STRONGLY!

Seriously, telling children they need to wax is insane. i'm not even sure i'd let her if she asked, but i guess i'll cross that bridge when i come to it.

But i do think that we need to be very careful in how we present choices to our kids. At every turn. I know that I have one dialog in my head while something bizarrely rational and compassioante comes out of my mouth.

Talking about things like, for example, the Spears girls (who are the all time best discussion starter ever for parents of girls, thank you, god or someone, for them!) Whenever they come up in conversation I hear myself talking about choices and decisions and learning.... When what's going through my head are all sorts of things that are judgemental and cruel, however accurate. :)

As for waxing and spa days. Manicures etc... are one thing. Kids have been playing "house" and "dress up" forever. It's modeling and they'll do it. But the things like waxing and dieting - that's adult behavior and needs to be explained as such. But explained as a personal choice, not one that has all sorts of societal baggage on it - and not good / bad / right / wrong. Just choice.

I totally agree with you. Really. I just happen to hate body hair.
