I don't get it, either

I think people hear that he is a "maverick" and make assumptions based on that. Like, he (used to) talk about global warming as a problem, so he must support reproductive rights, right? The man also clearly opposed obligating insurance companies to cover birth control.

Overcoming the specious connection between a few "maverick" moves that McCain made and an overall progressive agenda is critical.

Women believe McCain is pro-choice?

Where in the WORLD did those women get that notion? He's very open about being anti-choice, very open. His voting record is 100% in line with that. He always votes to undermine Roe v Wade and is quite clear as President he'd stack the SC to overturn it.

Are they actually listening to McCain? Or just to the mistaken MSM who keep calling him "moderate?"

Also, it's not simply a matter of reproductive choice as in abortion. It's also...would he back the AMA's initiative to ban home birth?

And school. He supports creationism. And I don't think you can count on him to support homeschooling, or protect it from people trying to make it illegal. I'm sure he'll think opening up schools so parents can enroll anywhere and incorporating creationism will satisfy that need---even though that's not really why all people homeschool.

When I was in college, I had

When I was in college, I had a pregnancy scare (thank you, abstinence-only sex ed, for teaching me nothing!) and found out the nearest abortion clinic was 70 miles away -- and I didn't have a car. Fortunately, the whole thing was a false alarm. I always figured that my clinic access was restricted because I was attending school in a rural area in the middle of nowhere. Turns out the problem is more common than I ever would have realized.

Now my apartment complex is right next door to an abortion clinic. Of course, now I know how to use birth control properly so I don't anticipate I'll ever have a need for it, but nontheless I'm comforted by knowing it's there. Assuming it isn't forced to close thanks to politics. The whole mess has inspired me to join Planned Parenthood and really start paying attention to what's going on.

I know it is a cliche, but I really think the more people know, the more we can stand up for our rights. I'm so glad that you found this useful.

You know, I didn't know the location of the nearest clinic to me. So, I did a quick search. Over 50 miles as well. Wow.

Passing this post on. Very important.

New President, New Threat

Sheena

I consider myself fortunate that I never faced the need or decision to have an abortion. II gave birth to two children who were loved long before they were welcomed into the world. Yet the possibility was always there although it was illegal for many of my childbearing years.

Now the very real possibility of a vigorous renewed fight for our rights may be ahead. One of the Republicans seeking nomination is John McCain, who has been vocal about his anti-choice stand, although not in the campaign. I feel he has been down-playing this important issue although his voting record is clear. And so are the other republicans anti-choice too.

This year I hope women WILL vote with and for their uteruses, and so will the men who love them.

women's rights

I'm of an age where I no longer have to worry about getting pregnant, but back in my younger days, I've been there. I remember years ago when my husband and I were on very shaky marriage ground, and I asked him, "What if I'm pregnant?" "That's your worry," he replied. I remember those feelings as if it were yesterday. We had already had a child, and while I was pregnant, he told me he wanted a divorce. Three months into the marriage he decided that being married and faithful was too much of a drag. There was no abortion in those days, and I don't even remember considering it at that time, but I wanted to die. I was 17, and had no idea how a child and I were going to survive. After the baby arrived, we continued the rocky marriage, but I was still panic stricken when I thought I might again be pregnant. And I've never forgotten his words. I was lucky that second time. I wasn't pregnant, just late. The marriage lasted 28 years, and we had two more planned children. But if I had not gotten pregnant in the very beginning, I would not have stayed in the marriage. Children keep many a woman from leaving. And after 28 years, I finally threw in the towel and said enough.

There are more safety nets today than there were back in 1949, but even so, raising a child without some loving support is so difficult. I have never believed that men should be involved in making laws that had to do with a woman's body. In fact, I feel quite radical about what men have put us through over the ages. Back in Pagan times, a woman had rights over her body. It was only when the patriarchal religions of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam came along that women were reduced to little better than slaves. Two excellent books on the subject: When God Was a Woman - Merlin Stone, and The First Sex - Elizabeth Gould Davis.

We women have only had the right to vote since 1920 and, for years, women had no access to birth control or even information about their bodies! And men have been notoriously slow in giving us our rights.

Yes, abortion is repugnant to most of us, but women should have the right to abort. Even if they have to fight for it over and over.

This is a high-level discussion for me.

I'm at the point in my life when I would never consider abortion, but that doesn't mean I'm not pro-choice. As I've grown older, I've tried not to foist my own standards on other people. I'm in an economic situation for which I could sustain, educate and support another child. I wasn't always in this place, and at those times in my life I probably would have had an abortion if the situation had presented itself.

Those who seek to end the choice assume that every woman is in their situation in life, and usually it's a fairly comfortable one. Just as I don't believe in taking away social services (because I think every American is one uninsured health crisis away from the streets), I don't believe in making people's decisions for them. I totally agree that life doesn't stop with birth. Children have to be fed and educated, treated for illnesses and provided with opportunities. For women who let that baby come out of their uterus - I have no sympathy for anyone who doesn't provide good parenting, nutrition, healthcare, what have you for a child they chose to have. That's why I think we have to give women the choice. Some women are not in the place mentally, emotionally or physically to care for new children. Some men aren't, either. It's cruel to bring a child into this world only to abandon him or her emotionally or physically.

So no, I couldn't have an abortion, but that doesn't mean I'm making the decisions for everyone. It's that kind of thinking that gets us in trouble, and it's that kind of thinking that has the world against America.

Surrender, Dorothy - When I was your age, we just let them ride in the back window.

Blogging for Choice Day

Thanks Lucy, I'm so glad you blogged for choice today - on BlogHer.

Not one to kick a gift horse in the mouth, I'd like to just ask why it was we needed permission in the first place, because I still haven't figured that one out. Of course, the LGBT community is still trying to figure out why the government is in our bedrooms, dictating who we can love, so maybe the two of us can battle that one out together. But I digress...

There are an awful lot of rights we've been given that we should always have had - the right to vote, for blacks and women are another one of those rights. But yea, I agree with you. Totally.
