Cruise Ship Overturns in Mediterranean Sea (Yikes)

I have a huge fear of cruise ships. I've been seasick aboard my parents sport fisher. I just can't imagine being stuck on a cruise ship for days seasick. We've been out on the open sea many times with my parents, they have a 65 Viking fishing boat, and every year they take hubby and I somewhere warm. But this is different. A cruise ship.

I don't see that the video showed up, so here is a link: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21134540/vp/45996604#null

Hubby told me about the dental seminar coming up in June aboard a cruise liner in the Mediterranean Sea and asked if we wanted to go. An ortho seminar onboard a cruise ship? Well, maybe I can just pack enough Dramamine or Bonine to keep me from getting sick. We have quite a few ports of call, we will be visiting in Italy, Greece, Spain and other places and my trigger finger got really itchy (I'm a photographer) when he told me of this opportunity. Although we can't charge the business for this seminar, we can justify it, in the name of education credits for hubby which he has to keep up with. And it was on our bucket list.

So yes, I said yes. And this morning, woke up to the news that the cruise ship Costa Concordia capsized Friday night, killing five people. Oh joy, reinforce my fears, why don't you? I am so sorry for the fatalities, and now my fear of cruising has just been renewed. Yikes!

Have you ever been on a cruise? Did you get sick? Would you be scared after this accident? I'm thinking I need counseling before we go now.

I can't ever go on a Mediterranean cruise because I have to get on a plane to do that, and I don't ever plan on doing that again. That is my dream vacation, as I think I've told you before!

Laine Griffin Fear of flying Laine? I hate the take offs and landings, and the airport experience ... but once you get to where you are going, it's worth the trouble. i'll take lots of pics so you can see what i see when we are there!

Well, I want to go but don't really want to go. What a pickle this is! I've always wanted to go on a cruise, now I am having third thoughts about it. LOL!

I'll go only if they promise that the captain of this ship is FIRED!

KarenLynnn 799 pts

HomeRearedChef he is under house arrest. they've nicknamed him Captain Coward and Chicken of the Sea. haha!

HomeRearedChef 1240 pts

KarenLynnn Actually, Chicken of the Sea is still too good a name for him. I LOVE Chicken of the Sea tuna. LOL! We never know just what we are truly made of until such a time presents itself. Will we be a hero or a coward? Sigh!

HomeRearedChef they said only 10% of us have the ability to keep cool and be leaders. i have another cruise ship post after watching 20/20 last night.

Oh! KarenLynn! I brush my teeth every day. Take me with you. Just close your eyes, take a Bonine, hobble up the gangplank holding on for dear life and GO!!! Don't think about it. Like me on airplanes...don't tell, but I am a basket case during take off and landing, but once I'm in the air, I act like I own the joint. That's how I do it...don't think about it...(easy to say, hard to do maybe...) And besides, WE WANT PHOTOS! Much Love, Fondly, Robin

SunbonnetSmart.com Robin, I am so excited about taking forever photo memories while we are there. No doubt you may get sick of seeing so many of them ... I'm not sure about uploading while we are there, but when we get back a flood of photos will be forthcoming! :)

I've been on one cruise, and it was 1,000 times better than I had imagined. I really thought cruises were for buffet-loving retirees, and ours totally proved me wrong.

The Costa cruise situation isn't the norm. Ours was a South American cruise around Cape Horn, and even with one really rough day a sea, we were fine, and the scenery, ports of call were completely worth it. I have terrible problem with motion sickness, but I just took a 24hour Bonine each night before bed and had zero issues.

threelittlebaers bonnie really helps me when we are trolling for fish out at sea. however, it makes me sleep, so i think your idea of taking it at bedtime is wonderful :)

KarenLynnnthreelittlebaers Great idea...I didn't catch that the first read through...thanks for pointing it out...taking Bonine at bedtime...

I hope you can go, not be sick, and have fun.

I tend to agree with Elaine; although the accident was terrible, I imagine the incidence of cruise accidents is very low compared with other modes of travel.

Cruising the Med will no doubt be a photography dream.

KarenLynnn 799 pts

isthisthemiddle definitely a photography dream come true! i didn't think we'd ever go to Europe although I've hinted a few times about going to Italy (my grandparents were immigrants).

i feel so bad for the families of those who passed away on their voyage :(

isthisthemiddle Hello there, Melanie! So glad to see you "out and about." I think you're right about the incidence of accidents. Can't be too high....and I would walk there to take a cruise around the Med...what a wonderful opportunity. Fondly, Robin

Love traveling by car through Europe with my husband and totally love traveling on a cruise ship. We are very fortunate to have been on Med. cruises several times. LOVED IT!! In fact, we will be on a cruise ship to visit some Northern European and Russian cities later this year. My husband gets motion sickness, but seems to be ok when we are on the larger ships. I will ask him what he does, because I am never sure. But, he seems to eat without difficulty and always enjoys happy hour before chowing down on the delicious offerings. In any case, accidents can happen anywhere and anytime. If you used that as a basis for travel, you would be sitting home and would never get out.

I hope you follow your initial instincts, go and post lots of photos.

elaineR.N. I know, it shouldn't affect the way I feel about going, and I guess it doesn't as much as it would if it were just a few weeks away. I'm terribly excited about cruising the Mediterranean! :)

I went on a 7 day cruise last winter and it was fine :) I was never sick and you can get a bracelet to wear which help to thwart the motion sickness. I bet you will have a wonderful time!

KarenLynnn 799 pts

victorias_view is the bracelet a prescription? or do I need to order it online somewhere?

victorias_view 1753 pts moderator

KarenLynnn No, you can purchase a bracelet or a patch for your neck. They both offset the motion sickness. I imagine you can pick it up at your local Walgreen's.
