Summer is supposed to be a laid-back, relaxing time of the year, but staying on top of summer camps, preparing for swim lessons and herding everyone off on day trips can be as stressful as a school day. So I like to make sure I fit some relaxing activities into our schedule. Here are some of my favorites:

Chill to the classics
Food may feed the body, but music feeds the soul. And when I want to unwind, only classical music will do. Rock and pop make me want to get up and dance, but with Nessun Dorma or the Flower Duet playing in the background, I can read, chat with my husband, drift off to sleep, or just sit and listen to that beautiful, beautiful sound.

Chill at the mall
It's not the most spiritual way to unwind, but hey, our local mall is cool -- as in, air-conditioned cool. We have a two-story house with no airconditioning and on hot days it can feel like all that global warming is happening in our house! So when temperatures hit three digits I take the kids and hit the mall, where we can grab a snack and walk around in climate-controlled bliss. And if I happen to come home with a few new shopping bags, well, shopping relaxes me too.

Snooze in the cinema
The cool air is partly what draws me to movie theaters in the summer, but it's also the promise of losing myself in some improbable fantasy, without a care in the world. So I buy a ticket, smuggle a couple of snacks in (yes, I admit, I do smuggle snacks into the theater -- no way I'm paying $5 for a sugar-laden soda when I can pour some cold Crystal Light lemonade into my water bottle and hide it in my purse. It's okay, I know you've done it too. I won't tell), and lose myself in another world.

Picnic in the shade
Every year we look forward to our city's evening summertime concert series. We throw some sandwiches and strawberries into a basket, grab a picnic blanket and head to the local park. I also take On The Go packets of Crystal Light, so everyone can pour their favorite flavor into their own water bottle. Once everyone is fed, I send the kids out to run around and dance, lean back into my hubby's arms and enjoy some wonderful summertime music. Ahhh.... my stress is melting away just thinking about it!
