I'm generally an upbeat, glass-half-full person, but even I get those days when I feel like getting back into bed with a box of chocolates and staying there all day. You know: Those Days. Those days when the kids always seem to be whining or fighting or asking you to buy stuff, and I feel like a failure as a parent. Or those days when I'm on my hands and knees under the breakfast table, wiping up and wondering what my business school classmates are doing. Or those days when there seem to be too many things to do and not enough time or hands to do them. Rather than spiral down into a deep depression, I have to give myself a little mental slap and remind myself I need to keep a positive attitude. Here are some things I do to regain my spirits and my self-confidence:

1) I run
I hate running. For the first five minutes, that is. During those five minutes, my joints ache and my muscles ache and I feel bored and impatient and wish I were back home doing anything but this. Then my muscles warm up, the endorphins kick in, and all of a sudden I feel like I can run forever. Running makes me feel strong and powerful and active and positive. The music on my iPod lifts me up, and I feel like I could move mountains. When I run, I find myself fantasizing about all kinds of things happening to me: finishing marathons, winning the lottery, getting lots of freelance work. You know, the good stuff.

 2) I blog
Blogging has always been a wonderful outlet for all kinds of emotions, from frustration to self-pity to happiness to pride. It's why I started blogging in the first place; when my twins were babies and I was getting zero sleep, with no family nearby to help me out and no money to hire help, and I was feeling helpless and alone and insecure about myself as a person. Blogging helped me channel all that into something constructive, and it still does today. When I feel angry, just thinking about what I'm going to blog calms me down, forces me to think clearly. When I feel happy, blogging amplifies my happiness because I know that friends and family will soon be able to share that happiness with me.

 3) I celebrate each and every accomplishment.
When life feels too overwhelming and I feel like I haven't accomplished anything, I make an extra effort to remind myself that I Have Done Things Today. Even the lowliest accomplishment is fair game for a pep talk. I've made time to run today! I cooked a meal from scratch! The dirty laundry hamper is finally empty! I drank 8 glasses of water (or I drank 4 glasses of water and 4 glasses of Crystal Light)! Even grownups like to be recognized for the things they do, and when there's no one around to cheer me on, then By George, I'll do it myself.

It's amazing what the power of positive thinking can do. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to lace up my running shoes and go break some world records.
