For almost a month now we've been talking about ways to water our bodies and feed our souls -- but when it comes to water, do we really know how much we need?  The age-old standard is to drink eight 8-oz glasses of fluids a day, but that's just a guideline for an average adult living in a temperate climate.   The actual number depends on quite a few factors, including weight, activity level, the climate in which you live, whether you're pregnant or breastfeeding, and so on.  Check out this hydration calculator to see how much water you need to drink per day, and you may be surprised to find out how much you actually need.

Once you've figured out how much water you need, the question becomes, how do you make sure you drink enough each day?  That's always a challenge for me, especially when I'm stuck in front of the computer and don't remember to get up for water -- even more so on cool days when I don't get thirsty enough to remember.  Thing is, once you actually feel thirst, you're already dehydrated, which makes it even more important to remind yourself to take regular water breaks during the day!

So how do I remember to drink enough water during the day?  I've tried pouring my daily requirement of water into a pitcher and drink from it during the day until it's all gone -- but when all that liquid is all in one place, I get depressed about how much I have to drink:

I can almost feel my stomach bloating and my bladder bursting when I think of having to drink that huge pitcher of water!

What works for me is building the habit of drinking during certain times of the day.  I always drink a big glass of water for each of my three main meals -- breakfast, lunch and dinner.  I also take a big glass of water with me to bed, and take sips throughout the night (if I happen to sleep deeply during the night, I wake up so thirsty that I end up drinking the whole glass anyway).  Each of those 4 glasses contains a cup and a half of liquid, which makes 6 cups, so the remaining 2 cups of my daily requirement fits nicely into a water bottle, which I can sip throughout the day without feeling like I'm being waterboarded.

Breaking my daily requirement up into glasses and meals works much better for me, especially when some of those glasses have Crystal Light in them!

Of course, it's not always plain water in those glasses; I love flavored drinks like Crystal Light iced tea or Crystal light pink lemonade for a nice, refreshing change.   Throw in some high-water content foods like watermelon slices, bowls of soup or cherry tomatoes, and I'm hydrated for the day!

For trying to remember to have all the water I need for the day I set out 8 glasses water or bottles for on the go hydration, on the counter and through out the day I fill one up and drink it as I do my daily tasks. Sometimes I will pre place in the glass things like the instant Crystal Light or other instant drinks so my water can be fancied up! I learned how important water was when dropping from 235 to 160 lbs! So I never forget my daily needs for water!

I am often running around and I used to forget to drink. It took a trip to the ER to get the point across that I should try to remain hydrated at all times. I now carry a liter bottle of water with me and when it's empty I refill it. Three a day for me! I also love to add the flavor packets to mix up the taste a bit. Plain water is rather boring!

I don't really like the taste of water and have a difficult time getting my 6-8 glasses per day. I rely on Crystal Light to get the amount that I need. My favorite is iced tea.

i've used crystal light for years and that's the only reason i can drink my daily water; so much better than plain water

I drink a lot of water. I do flavor my water, from time to time, with lemon. This adds vitamin c too! It is good to stay hydrated!

I make my water bottle my number 3 priority when leaving the house, and refill it as often as possible.....

I also add Crystal Light to my water. I drink alot any way and the great taste of Crystal Light just makes it so much easier to remember to stay hydrated! Crystal Light IS my well known secret!

I remember to stay hydrated because I have a little alarm. It is 3 years old, about 40 inches high, and is incredibly SHRILL! If we go too long - like say 30 minutes - without a drink it goes off. It sounds something like "Mommy, I am SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO thirsty!"

gotfire55 5 pts

I start out each morning by drinking a glass of water. It helps me remember by making it one of the first things I do each day.

With record temps almost daily here in the South, I keep water close at hand not only to cut the thirst but to keep my skin hydrated as well. I drive most of the day and the best thing I have found is carrying an insulated water bottle and refill at the water fountains as the day goes on.

If you've ever been stuck in a hot sweltering subway car without your bottled water, you never need reminding again to always bring your water with you wherever you go.

So true, thank you for a great article. I love the hydration calculator too - very helpful!

I remember to drink water everyday because i know how important it is for my entire being. I've read several studies that suggest that many diseases are actually caused because of dehydration. Staying hydrated is so important too because we are composed of mostly water and water keeps our organs functioning, our skin healthy, our joints lubricated, our muscles strong, and our digestion working. Our family drinks Crystal light because it's a great alternative to carbonated or sugary beverages.

Anyway, to answer the contest I have a gallon pitcher that helps me remember and keep track of how much water I drink. Crystal Light helps me stay motivated to always drink it all. hehe

Healthy wishes to all,
Kristen

I am shocked I have always been good at drinking 8ish glasses of water a day but since I work out a lot and live at high altitude and in a dry climate I should be drinking 13 to 14 glasses a day!

I go through phases where sometimes I love the taste of water and I cannot get enough and other times I need Crystal Light to get it down. But nothing does beat a regular glass of ice water after a hard workout.

I work at a desk all day, so when I need to get up and stretch, I take a walk around the office and refill my water cup. I generally drink water all day at work, and allow myself more of a 'treat' with dinner such as iced tea or lemonade. Our family has just recently tried Crystal Light to avoid some of the sugar in our diet and I must say we've enjoyed all the flavors we've tried so far. It even passed the test with my kids! Thanks so much for this promotion. I think Crystal Light is a great product.

Love Crystal Light especially the lemonade, but I am always thirsty. I constantly have a drink with me, even at night. To mix it up I also drink RX Stress Tea which has no caffeine, black&green tea, ginseng, chamomile, valerian, vitamins B6&B12. Don't want to plug another product here, but the same drink all the time gets old.

I drink from the largest glass that I can. i find if I *think* Im only drinking one glass, it doesn't seem like so much (but with my biggest cup Im actually drinking nearly 4 servings!)

I make sure I drink enough water by carrying around a 16 oz. water bottle all day. I also alternate plain water and using Crystal Light.

I always try to keep water near by-usually in my staneless steel waterbottle. I keep track By making sure I drink a full bottle in the morning, at least 1/2 of one at lunch and another full one in the afternoon. I usually mix it up in the afternoon by adding a single packet of crystal light to my water- the peach green tea is my favorite. I keep a couple of those single serve packets in my purse so I always have them on hand.

I've never been a lover of drinking water, but win my son, now 2 and ever so observant I am making the switch (from soda to water) to be a good role model for him. I do love flavoring my water and getting it from other sources like fruit, soup, etc. that you mentioned.

I think for me, if I just keep reminding myself how good it is for me and my family--that is really the best motivator to "drink it up".

My girls are only allowed to have juice once a day so the rest of the day I am offering water constantly. It naturally reminds me to drink it as well.

I pour half my daily water into a pitcher in the morning, flavor it with tea or crystal light, and drink it throughout the day. Straight water works great for meals, but I have a hard time getting excited about it betweentimes.

How I remember to stay hydrated.
Well, don't laugh, I write on post-it notes. So, I remember all the things I can't forget.

I drink bottled water all day. When I get tired of plain water I will add a packet of crystal light to my bottle. Shake it and go! Raspberry ice is my favorite!

Pollyanna Laughs 5 pts

I have a reminder that pops up on my computer throughout the day reminding me to go fill my water bottle.

At home, I leave a glass next to the fridge (much to my husband's dismay) so it's always ready for a quick drink.

And there is always a pitcher of Crystal Light (or sugar free kool-aid) in the fridge. I swear we almost never actually wash it. Whomever pours the last glass out is in charge of making up a new pitcher.

solara 5 pts

I dilute my lemonade or other flavored drinks with water (especially when I'm exercising) - I fill a cup/bottle with the drink, drink half of it, refill it with water, and continue to do so until I'm done exercising and have finished an extra bottle or glass of water, to be safe.

anonymous479 5 pts

I just keep either a glass or bottle of water with me all the time and take sips of it. It has developed into a habit, so I don't really have to remember to do it anymore. LPoser1(at) gmail (dot) com

I do a lot of landscaping so my body tells me to camel up! I love crystal light and keep a good sized container full of the packets right on the counter. I prefer it over sodas or tea which often make you thirstier.

Phantom12345 5 pts

Whenever you go to get some juice or to get some soda drink double the amount of juice or soda that you drank so that you can stay hydrated!

Phantom12345 5 pts

I learned this cool trick to seeing if your hydrated. You push on your arm with one finger as hard as you can and then the spot you pressed will turn white. The faster it returns to it's normal color the more hydrated you are. Whenever I do that trick I always drink water and whenever I think about water I drink it! I love water, I would rather have water than soda, juice, milk, or anything else! It is healthy and refreshing! Speaking of water...I should drink some now!

Add water to your phone calendar every couple hours, and set the alarm, then if you get too busy, you'll be reminded to stop and drink.
