I always feel and look my best when I'm eating right, getting enough sleep and keeping active. Clothes fit better, I have more energy, I feel more confident and I'm relaxed and happy. There's a light in my eyes and a spring in my step because I know I'm doing the right thing for me and my body.

But alas, I can't say I always practice what I preach, and there are all too many days when I don't get enough exercise, or eat all the wrong foods, or stay up way too late. Sometimes the allure of fish and chips, ice cream sundaes or all-you-can-eat buffets clouds my judgment, and I lose sight of the personal rewards of a healthy lifestyle when faced with all that delicious, salt, sugar and fat. For true inspiration, I have to look outside myself.

When all is said and done, I have three big reasons for staying healthy and fit, and they've all inherited the dimple on my left cheek. My 3 kids mean everything to me, and I want to live a long and healthy life so I can be there for them, throughout their childhood and into adulthood. With some luck (and a lot of healthy living to increase my chances), I'll live long enough to see my grandchildren (seeing my kids go through the headaches that they're currently putting me through is the sweetest revenge there is).

But there's a nobler reason for me to live a healthy lifestyle for the sake of my kids. I want them to lead a healthy lifestyle and grow up to live a long, healthy life. I want them to realize that unprocessed, natural food can be delicious and satisfying, and that being active is the right way to go. I want to teach them that no food needs to be off limits if they can enjoy it in moderation and find a balance between a treat day and every day. But I can't do it just by telling them; I want to show them. I want to show them -- not just tell them -- that getting enough sleep and drinking enough water gives you better skin than any miracle makeup or face lift.  My kids are not going develop the right habits unless their mother tells them to do as she says and not as she does, which is inspiration enough for me to put down the donuts and pick up the apples.

For a chance to win $1,000, tell me inspires you in a comment below. Don't forget to check back for my next post for another chance to win!

My Mother taught me to eat fresh fruits and fresh veggies and lots of nuts (almonds, walnuts, etc)... then there are my Grandsons, they are the light of my life. Next it is my own health, due to health problems I try to eat healthy and be healthy. I want and need to be here for my Grandsons.

Life inspires me. Watching my kids discover. Watching the animals in the yard prepare for the future. Watching old and young pursue their goals. Whenever I look around, life is everywhere and I find incredible inspiration in nearly every thing I see!

I live a healthy life for me and my 3 girls--plus my husband is a black belt and inspires us all to stay fit and active. There is a real sense of control when you plan healthy meals and make the time to exercise. I can't control many things in my life but I can control how I eat and feel.

I'm inspired by my late husband. He was a special operations soldier killed in Afghanistan 8 years ago and was one of the fittest, healthiest, kindest most sincere people I have ever known. I try to be more like him regularly.

I was told I had an inoperable "terminal" brain tumor by 4 neurosurgeons before I found one willing to tackle it. He told my the recovery time would be long, and it was. I relearned how to read, walk, and finally drive again. As a divorced parent, I was motivated by my love for my children, and my desire to raise them. As I got better, I found I had gained a lot of weight during the time that about all I could do was sleep, watch TV, and try to play video games as therapy (when I could remember how!)
I started walking everyday, and used Crystal Light to help. When I felt hungry, I would drink a HUGE Crystal Light, which tasted great and felt like a treat. (I don't like the taste of water, but living in super hot Phoenix meant I needed it a lot.) Then I'd wait 1/2 hour to see if I was still hungry. This helped me lose 80 pounds! Now I'm motivated by my 80+ year old Dad who maintains a huge yard with 2 gardens and fruit trees (yes, even trimming trees!) all by himself. He refuses help, because he says it would make him 'get old'. I want to be a 'play on the floor', go hiking grandma. I am motivated by my Dad, my children, and my grandchildren to stay healthy and active. Living long is no good without being able to be active and involved, to be the best me I can be, for my loved ones!

I was told I had an inoperable 'terminal" brain tumor by 4 neurologists, before I finally found one that thought he could tackle it. He told me my recuperation time would be long, however.
As a recently divorced parent, I was motivated by the desire to raise my two children, whom I loved with all my heart. Living a healthy lifestyle helped me to have the strength I needed to persevere. I relearned to read, walk, and finally, drive again. By then I had gained weight from all the time I couldn't do much of anything, but watch TV and try to play video games (IF I could remember how) I live in super hot Phoenix, and used Crystal Light to help me lose weight. I went walking every morning, and when I thought I was hungry, I would first drink a huge Crystal Light (because I've never really cared much for water) and the great taste made me feel like I was having a treat. Then I would wait 1/2 hour or so to see if I had really been hungry, or just thirsty. I lost 80 pounds this way. Now my Dad who is in is 80's is inspiring me to stay healthy. He has a huge yard with two gardens and fruit trees that he maintains himself. His work in the gardens keeps him happy & healthy. I want to be like him in my 80's because I want to be able to take care of myself, and be an active 'play on the floor' and hiking grandma. I hope to be able to feel good enough to travel, too. Living a long life is no good if you can't feel good and be active as well. My Dad, my children and my grandchildren inspire me to be the best me I can be.

I think it would be easier to answer the question, "what doesn't inspire me"! I'm inspired by people, sunny days, rainy days, music, movies, HGTV :), photos, stories, and FOOD! My life isn't perfect, far from it, but I love it. It's the only one I'll ever have and I plan to make the most of every. single. day.
Hugs to all y'all!

I stay healthy because I love myself. If I'm not proud of me, what would my kids grow up thinking of themselves? I switched to Crystal Light when I started jogging. Love it!

I was not able to have kids but I love them. What inspires me to be or get healthy is by volunteering and speaking in the san diego unified school system and other arenas. I worked w/an agency that trained people who are affected or infected w/HIV and then we would tell our stories of who we may have loved and lost due to it or if we have it ourself. So I would speak on how my ex was infected in 1985 just a few urs older than the kids r that I am speaking to and that how everything we do has consequences and affects everyone around us like a ripple in a pond. The kids r dead silent and attentive they ask lots of questions and my faveorite part is they will write a response letter re: the presentation and what if anything they got from it and the teacher collects them all and sends them to the agency and the speakers get the ones to them. They make me cry. Many r doing high risk behaviors and never though anything could happen to them etc. and now they say they will either NOT do what they r or really think long and hard about all decisions they make and if only one does change the behavior it is worth it for me to open up so honestly. Many have admitted to being molested as a kid and using drugs now or having unprotected sex and will now go for help and tell someone. THAT INSPIRES ME to do even more. Our kids are the future and entire generations r being wiped out from diseases and obesity, drugs etc. So I like to encourage them to start with small steps and not overwhelm themselves as whenever I went that way I would get the "forget about it"... The letters are so amazing.

My inspiration for being healthier is competing in the sport of curling. Curling is a much harder sport than it might look. The best curlers are in shape and have a fitness plan.

I have three kids, all are teens. I just lost 45 pounds and went from a size 22 to a size 10.
The biggest reason was my daughter. She's very conscious of her body and her weight. Too worried about it if you ask me.
But she also saw a fat mom and worried SHE would be that way.
The biggest thing I did was change my eating habits but NOT make it a HUGE issue. I didn't talk about 'dieting' or even about how being fat was bad.. I just lost it slowly.

She is an amazing teen and sees that weight is a problem but you can change things with a positive approach and NOT stressing over it :)

My family means everything to me. I currently have to be both mother and father to our children right now.I am a military spouse and have been for almost 18 years. My husband is currently deployed to Iraq.I really don't have the luxury of slacking where my health is concerned. I have to be fit even though I am not the one who is actually in the service. I am one of many left behind to keep things running on the homefront.I have many days when my stress levels just feel overwhelming, but than I think of my husband pushing himself in 116 degree heat.I honestly can't imagine having to be in full gear and doing strenous work, and still trying to stay hydrated in those circumanstances so I would have to say when the kid's and I are complaing about the heat and humidity of 80 or so degree weather. I think of my husband and all of those that are right along with him. My husband David he is my heart and true inspiration.

my husband inspires me. i want to have that energy at the end of the day (i'm a mama to 2 little girls with another on the way!), to focus on him and our relationship. because without that, staying healthy doesn't matter. i want our children to know and see that their parents truly love each other, and sacrifice even time with them to be together.

Though I was a single parent to three sons, raising two of them with no child support, I had a wonderful job as a forensic nurse. It was difficult dealing with adult and child sexual abuse cases but, my main way of dealing with the stress, was by traveling and sharing my love of travel with my sons. I'm 65 now and lost my job of 21 years in massive budget cuts nearly a year and a half ago. I can't afford to travel any more but I am so glad I didn't wait until retirement to see the world. I learned so much about other cultures, respect for mankind, appreciation for what truly matters in life, the meaning of a smile when one might not speak the language of the place you are visiting. I learned to enjoy unusual foods and exotic tastes, danced to musical instruments with sounds I'd never heard, made friends around the globe who have remained friends throughout
my life. It warms my heart to see my children continuing this legacy.

I was diagnosed with compartment syndrome when I was a senior in high school. If I had kept running on my legs, they could have gone paralyzed. Having my surgery for compartment syndrome allowed me to run again and not only run over a mile but complete a half marathon. Now I've made it onto a division one collegiate cross country and track team and everyday I run I think of how lucky I am to have the ability to do so.

I used to look for inspiration from my kids, my husband, my friends, my heroes...but now I have to be honest at age 41 and look in the mirror and inspire myself. Otherwise, I will let excuses, reasons, circumstances get in the way of my being inspired. I used to cut out pictures of what a healthy body was so that I could be inspired by that and go exercise. Well, I look in the mirror in the morning at myself and have to believe I am worth it. I am worth taking care of and being healthy because it is so. Healthy does not need to be deserved, earned or merited...it just needs to be. For that, I have to realize that I can always justify, find an excuse, or complain as to why I am not doing all I can every day - I need to just let it go and just be. Be healthy, be loving, be kind, be myself and who I was meant to be in this life. I now choose a healthy lifestyle because in that I create a wonderful way of loving those around me better and hopefully for longer.
