How do I stay fit?

There are a couple of things I have in place to help me be successful in my plight/fight to stay fit:

  • Consistent exercise
  • Goal setting.
  • A partner
  • Just say NO to deprivation
  • Hydration.

Exercise. How much or how often I exercise varies. But one thing is certain, if I do not exercise... I do not get to wear my cute jeans. For me, I need to try for 4 days a week... I am a mom of 3. I know how busy life gets. I know that adding exercise to an already overwhelming day can be wicked-tough. However, I have come to a point where I am willing to make that trade. I NEED to make that trade. Coming to this conclusion and commitment has been a process of years for me… of growing, weaving, learning, re-committing...

Goal setting. If I do not have an event (yes, a RACE *gasp*), I find it VERY easy to talk myself out of spending time exercising. I spent many years trying to get fit, with little success... until I began setting goals. I needed a predictable plan to help me know what, when and how long. I needed a pay-off - a finish line. I do not do these events to win. I do them to finish. And I have yet to meet one person to "boo" at me for *merely* finishing. Besides, I always get a medal, and I never get a medal for cleaning the toilets.

Partnering. Knowing someone is waiting for me at the buttcrack of dawn helps me get up. Having someone calling me to set-up our weekend run makes me create time to get out and burn calories. Knowing that someone is counting on you to *be there* can have a huge impact on getting up, out, and moving. Just does. Having people in your life who will email or call you to go for a run or a walk instead of a piece of cheesecake is a sure-fire way to make progress toward better fitness.

Deprivation. I eat most things, within limits. I never say "never". I'll eat cake, even sometimes by the row *gasp*.  Yet... I will pass on items, or try to slam back a big glass of water alone or mixed with a Crystal Light flavor if I think I need to have strength to pass-up something tempting... OR if I am simply in a snacky-mood and know plowing through the pantry would literally -- make my butt look big. I make sure I get my cheese/funnel/*insert your favorite here*/cake too. A huge factor in my success has been feeling like I can live!

Hydration. It's key... whether holding off the urge to snack or keeping my body ready to take on a work out... or simply the day. I need to stay hydrated for my long efforts, and I need it for regular day-to-day life. Staying hydrated helps keep my urges to snack at bay and is critical for the stamina I need to be able to exercise consistently. Fluids. Lots of fluids... and I get bored with just water.  I like to spike my water too!

Now, I turn the table. I've told you what I do to stay fit... but I know MY ways are not the ONLY ways. I am curious... What do YOU do to stay fit? Answer this question in the comments below for a chance to win a $1,000 Visa gift card! Oh gollygoodness!!! That could help pay for LOTS of race registrations! Don't forget to check back for my next post on June 14th for another chance to win!

I too give in to the occasional craving for cookies or ice cream.(but just a little :D) It makes sticking to a low carb regimen a little easier knowing it's not carved in stone. I am mostly a pastrami and eggs kind of girl!
Also ,I drink vegetable juice as a snack between meals. It's delicious and filling, too.
I also walk most everywhere I go and that helps keep me trim and fit.

I try to make it to the gym 5 times a week to stay fit. I enjoy the group exercise classes and I've made some friends I get to chat with before/after class. I also am able to enjoy this time kid free with the awesome childcare.

Date a skinny running/cycling man. I KNOW that sounds ridiculous but it's hard to shovel chocolate into my mouth or sit on the couch while boyfriend/boytoy/partner is calculating nutrition to train for a century ride. It's also motivating and incredibly vain to know that I don't want to outweigh him or not be able to keep up at all.

So there's the truth.

Oh yeah, and drink lots of water and keep track of my food and walk my Energizer Bunny Dog and love myself and all of that good stuff.

Soccer is a great tool for me to stay fit. If I have a team of people depending on me to show up, I will show up! Also, soccer challenges me to be more fit on the field so it really ups the ante in motivation for other excercise off the field. I want to excercise more so my soccer games are more fun!
But aside from that, I just try to do something a bit more active everyday. Get out from behind my desk for a walk, some yard work, a little yoga or a work out video. Variety makes it easy to fit it in during the day.

I realized I was spending more time indoors than outdoors. And I knew it would take a major life do-over to change that. I had heard about the Wii and how great it is for physical fitness, but I couldn't afford one. I do have an old Playstation 2 that still works, so I got on an auction site and found Dance Dance Revolution with the mat and all and now I try to do that at least a few times a week. Hey, it's better than nothing!! And it's FUN!

@redfuzzycow - LUCKY! That's fantastic!@jillyrh@momRN@auntiethesis
- good stuff!
- Oh yes! A little "trick" I use is taking a big drink to help curb my snack drive :)
- Walking is exercise! And it's great for your dog too... it's great that you have a plan!

Amen! Me too. I have tried the deprivation method, and I end up losing it completely. It's about finding a plan that we can stick with for our whole life... :)

I would say my biggest struggle is getting a good breakfast... though I know it is probably one of the best things I could do to help keep snacking down and keep my energy up. I'm glad you brought that up!

I've never been a huge exercise fan, but I'm a constant walker. I love grabbing the dog and talking a walk through the neighborhood.

I've found I'm more motivated to walk if I actually plan for it in my daily routine. I write down the night before the things I want to accomplish during the day, set my alarm and then make sure I do the items on my list and cross them off when complete. Walking the dog is an 11 am activity almost every day. I try to vary our route and make sure I bring my ipod so I have something to listen to while I'm walking..it makes the time pass quickly.

I'm working hard to kick the diet soda habit and replace it with healthier beverages, like good old fashioned WATER, occasional glass of juice, milk, and an occasional mug of coffee. I'm drinking more water than anything else and have recently discovered Crystal Light Hunger Satisfaction, which not only helps me stay hydrated, but helps keep hunger at bay. Great way to snack in between meals and get my water in too!

Isn't it great when something you love gets you moving! But, yes... we can't always DO just to get away from the pull of snacking/comfort food. I sometimes try to throw back a big glass of water to make my tummy not act like it wants something :)

I'm a big proponent of portion control, but not complete deprivation. Complete deprivation makes me crazy. So I try to have a bite or two of the foods that I really crave, but that aren't so healthy.

First and foremost I believe a healthy breakfast is so important - so many of us, especially moms have so much to do that we often skip meals and just "snack" though out the day, I also try to get my exercise from activities with the kids - for example they love going on walks, they are sometimes actually the ones that drag me out!! But afterwards I am always so thankful they did! :) LOL!

I really don't have time but I try to do what I can. I park my car far from where I am going. I garden. I walk during lunch time. I am cutting out sugar. I am als drinking more water and avoiding any sodas. My fat consumption has gone down as well. At least once a week I make a vegetarian meal.

The thing with me is that I have been working really hard to get back in shape.
1. I make a proper grocery list and don't bring credit cards with me so that I'm not tempted to add more junk food on the bill and on my hips

2. I workout in the morning. Once it's over for the day so much better.

3. I don't drink juice. I just eat the fruit

4. I take dance classes - fun AND effective :)

I run and work out! I try to run 9 miles a week and I stay active. I try to stay pump to exercise. I like workout and going to the gym. Remember to stretch!

We have a Wii and I have the Wii Fit. I do enjoy it alot. My favorite thing about the Wii Fit is that most of the workouts are 10-15min each. That means I can squeeze in a quickie workout some days. I really like the Hula Hooping one and most of the balance games. I figure something is better than nothing.

After years of putting my own health on the backburner, I realized I needed to put it at the top because everyone depended on me! (Psychological mother trick - make it benefit everyone else!)
Now I rise early enough to fit my hour-long workouts in before work - cardio three days, weights two days. If I have to skip a morning, I try to make up for it on the weekend, or just get back on track the next week. If I'm really tired I tell myself I don't have to do quite as much... and then I end up working out just as hard. I've learned all the tricks I need to pull on myself.
One of the best motivators is one you mentioned... being able to fit into all of the clothes I bought after I dropped 20 pounds. I can't afford new ones again!

I stay fit by hiking, but I don't really hike to stay fit. I hike because I love nature and I love to be active and outdoors.

I actually am most motivated to become fitter so I can hike further and to more challenging places. My current goal is to hike to the top of Mt. Whitney next summer (highest peak in the lower 48 states).

My biggest challenge in becoming more fit is to resist the cheetos, cheez-its, ice cream, etc. I haven't found a way yet to resist the urge to cheer myself up by eating comfort food which often is junk food. Still searching for something else to do besides eating when I need comfort and I can't go hiking ;-)

I have gone to nearly every extreme... reading your words remind me of me :) Having kids makes it hard... When I started making changes that actually lasted... they were small ones. Mastering a small one, then another, then another... more water, less soda... (for me...) it has all been gradual. Sometimes I have to step back and re-assess because I let old ways creep back in.

My encouragement to you is don't let yourself get disheartened! Keep trying, and don't let not doing the ideal EVERY TIME stop the momentum from forward progress! :)

Currently I am trying to get fit; soon enough, I hope, I will be trying to stay fit. To make sure I get enough miles in per week I set a goal and write down how far I went after each "trip" on my treadmill. When I am trying to improve my speed I also record how long it took, I try to shave at least 10 seconds per run off my time.

All great points Jenny and everyone. I just turned 51 and mow over 2.5 acres with a push mower, shoveled two vegetable gardens by hand and landscape everywhere with flowers and trees. But prior to having so much to take care of I had a black/white belt in Tai Chi and also dance exercise classes were really fun. Also having a boyfriend 20 years younger keeps me in good shape ;)

my latest idea from research at University of Massachusetts Exercise Science department: you expend more calories by standing at your desk than sitting. So I try to mix in some standing time while at the computer. It keeps me more alert although it's a bit harder to read the browser so I hit Ctl-+ in firefox to enlarge the type so I can still read it!

I do anything I can to stay fit.
Ideally I would run 4 days a week and stay away from sugar.
However with 2 kids my time is limited, so I do what I can when I can.
Also, many days my beverage consumption consists of coffee with milk in the morning, and beer in the afternoon. I've realized recently how bad that is so I'm trying to drink more water again.
And reading between the lines will tell you that I weigh more now than I ever have except when I was preggers so its pretty disheartening but I'm trying harder. Not a very good answer :-(

@Mami2jcn and @tcarolinep... something is always better that nothing. So important to keep moving!

@faith24... I agree. I tried many ways over the years, and finally found what has clicked with my body and personality. And I STRONGLY agree - hydration is SO important regardless of what you do!
