Why Do You Stay Fit?

I stay fit because I never want to go back. Ever.

*Been there, done that*... for 20 years... and I am much happier here.

This question actually evokes a surprising amount of emotion. I would say my struggle with weight began around second grade. I don't remember a moment in my childhood after that time where food wasn't an issue. Dieting, food focus, sneaking treats... a certain level of hoarding. I would wake-up thinking about food, and go to sleep thinking about food -- for yeeeears.

It has only been since AFTER having kids I have earned a weight and fitness level I am finally pretty happy with -- but darn those *last ten pounds*! To be totally honest, if I never lose that last 10... I'm cool. I will never be a thin girl, but I am a healthy girl.

Over the years I tried SO many things, and failed. I was sad, uncomfortable and insecure. I spent my young years... 20 of them, hating me. Hating the fact I could not seem to get a grip and control my own life. But one day... I had my *light bulb moment*.

It has been consistent effort to maintain the fitness level I feel is right for me. Some seasons of life are harder than others. But I make the effort to maintain my current state of fitness because I need this. My family needs it. I have more energy. I am happier and more comfortable in my own skin. I feel more confident and capable. I love that my children see me working to be healthy... that this concept of exercise and making healthy eating choices will not be new and foreign to them. I make the efforts to stay fit for my children. I hope my efforts are a healthy example to them. I want their childhood and young adulthood to be joy-filled... not memories filled with food struggles and shame.

This post totally made me cry. 10 years ago I NEVER would have dreamed I'd be sharing my own fitness success story... Wow. Just, wow.

How about you? Why do you stay fit? Have you had a "light bulb moment" that changed your fitness direction? Let me know in the comments below for a chance to win a $1,000 Visa gift card! Don't forget to check back for my next post on July 12th for another chance to win!

it helps with my health problems. It keeps me on one medication instead of 4.

I have a father with diabetes, and a familial history of seasonal depression, so staying active and fit is the only way to ensure I don't call prey to either of these. I began weight training in August of this year and thus far have lost 20 lbs (and gained muscle to boot) and am already feeling the health effects.

My motivation is fitting into smaller clothes. Or having the clothes I currently own become looser!

by walking a lot. I take the dog for walks. I also try to park far away from the door when I go shopping so that I get some extra exercise into my day.

I stay fit by running and trying to eat right. My moment when I realized I had to lose weight was when I saw photos of myself at my brother's wedding, it really put things in perspective and I whipped myself into shape!

One day I just thought 'hey, I'm always feeling bad about being a little bit out of shape so why not change that?!' So I decided to put some regular fitness in my daily routine and eat better....I do have yo yo months sometimes when life is not so good but I know I will never be happy with myself unless I look decent so I keep going back to working out daily....I life weights, take my dog for a walk, do simple exercises and take the stairs...

I stay fit to keep my mind and body healthy

When I realized that little changes over the course of a day can be as good as one big drastic change, I was able to really make big differences in my life.

The thought of being unhealthy or sick motivates me to eat right and exercise so I can stay healthy.

ambergirl 5 pts

I stay fit & try to eat healthy to generate enough energy to enjoy life instead of feeling like I'm dragging through & enduring it! :D

Pilates is my favorite but walking is overall the best for me, I take advantage of our beautiful riverwalk 3 times a week & round things out with fitness dvds that are a challenge for me- Tracy Andersen is a favorite & Hillary Burnett & Ana Caban keep things mixed up. Also I find that the more effort I put in, the better & more easily I watch what I eat & it doesn't feel like a sacrifice- I think- do you really want a nibble of that if it costs a mile?! lol

Staying hydrated has also been cruical as this summer has seen a few heatwaves where we are!

At my heaviest I weighed 284 lbs. My Doctor wanted to put me on the prescription version of Ali. When I read the side effects of it, I decided to take control of my life and join weight watchers and exercise. It was a long road but I've lost over 100 lbs, watch what I eat and exercise daily. It has been good for both my physical and metal health. There are days where I struggle through a workout but feel so much better that I did it. I stay fit because it opens up opportunities to have a better life. You can have all the money in the world but if you're in bad health, that money is worthless.

willitara 5 pts

I've been aware for a long time that I'm not a healthy eater. I'm about 50 pounds heavier than I would like and I've tried so many things to lose weight. I know exercise is a must, but between arthritis and asthma (and generally poor condition) I don't know if I can ever get it off.

seurick 5 pts

my family motivates me, seeing how they stay so healthy and fit motivates me to do the same. it also helps that we're all in this together!

staying fit results in a lot less health problems! That's certainly incentive as one gets older.

My motivation tips: spending time with my daughter and keeping her active by taking a daily walk together, looking cute in clothes and being able to buy anything, knowing that I can eat anything I want every once in a while and not feel bad if I have been good the other days!

The reason why I stay fit is to stay healthy, and avoid pitfalls in my diet.

choochoo 5 pts

I stay fit because every once in a while, I like to indulge in the cookies. I can't sit there and eat four cookies then go on my merry little way. I have to do something about those cookies! I hate shopping, so if I just let the cookies sit there, I'll eventually have to go shopping for larger clothes. Plus, I live in a hot state, so I have to keep the sweat fields small.

Clamo88 5 pts

its always so much funner to have an exercise buddy because you motivate each other i love to exercise and go walking with my teenage daughter :)

leandrew 5 pts

There are several reasons why my 'health' and 'staying fit' are important to me, but the two 'most' important reasons are my WIFE and KIDS! Their unwavering love and support 'inspires me' to take my health seriously so that I can live a long and fruitful life and be the best FATHER and HUSBAND I can possibly be!

My motivation is right in front of me all the time. My mother is only 73, and has advanced vascular dementia. Doing research on her condition, I've learned that exercise and circulation are key components to preventing it. Eating healthy and keeping active have been proven to lower the risk of contracting this terrible disease.

My mother started becoming ill at the same age I am now, and now that she's in hospice and I'm caring for her, I know she'd hate what she's had to go through. She's taught me so many things, and perhaps one of the greatest has been that I don't want to go down the same terrible road she has had to endure.

....surgery and I'm motivated to keep the lbs. off because it makes my knee feel much better if I'm not trying to move around with extra weight.....

guettel78 5 pts

I keep an old photo of myself (before I began to lose weight) as well as an old pair of pants around to remind myself where I was at my lowest and to reinforce my commitment to be fit and healthy. I also keep photos of my family around me to remind myself that being active and maintaining a good diet is for their benefit as well - to be a good role model and to be around longer for them! I also have learned to stop beating myself up when I have an occasional lapse, and to get right back on track toward maintaining my fitness.

susan1215 5 pts

Seeing a picture of myself got me movitvated to get into shape. It's easy when I look into a mirror that just shows my face to deny what my body looks like, but seeing the picture of my self woke me up.

Our secret is to stay fit together. My husband had a heart attack after we lost our daughter and now we both have arthritis. We HAVE to exercise every day to stay pain-free so we do strenuous up and down hill walking for 50 minutes every day and that takes care of it. We eat well to keep inflammation down also which is really important.

I've had a recurrent leg injury for the past few years that has been greatly exacerbated by my weight. My doctor provided my "a-ha" moment by stating that if I were to lose weight my injury would not recur.

I am drinking more water and trying to more a lot more - it's time to make fitness and my body a higher priority. I'd like to be as healthy as possible and not under medical treatment for injury.

I'm trying to get fit so that I can play more with my girls. I have an extremely low blood count level so I'm always very tired. I'm doing everything I can to get that taken care of so that I can go out and play with my girls more.

tutugirl 5 pts

I am just working on losing weight that I just let happen over the years. It's certainly not easy getting on that treadmill and feeling like crap. Right there is an incentive to eat right and get healthy. I figure what's the point of going through all the pain just to eat like garbage. It's helping.

poolpooli 5 pts

I just thought I have to, have to, do this for my self and be my own advocate cause no one else will

I think that I'm relatively fit (weight-wise), but I'd love to tone up. My arms and stomach are so mushy! My best friend has been motivating me to work out, and she's also committed to losing excess fat.

I stay motivated by working out with my buddy (who is also my husband)! He has lost 50 pounds since the beginning of the year and his dedication actually helps to keep ME motivated!

braimers1 5 pts

I can say that no doubt my husband motivates me. He is such a gentle leader always reminding me in his own nice way that I don't want to get behind on my 30 minutes on the tread. And together, we eat smart one meals. This also motivates me as it is a team effort!

Living healthy is a whole lifestyle. You have to eat right and exercise. My diet is better than my exercise routine, but my family keeps me moving. I try to get out play and walk as much as possible. (Going green too!) Thanks!

lisalmg 5 pts

I stay fit and motivated by not keeping myself on a diet. I eat foods I enjoy in small amounts and exercise daily. I try tho change my exercise routine so that it stay challenging but fun.

singermagic1 5 pts

Why, that answer is simple I want to still be active up until the end when ever that is. I want to be fit so that I can take advantage of opportunities that come my way. I had a moment where I just realized that life was too short not to be happy in your life and a big part of that is being fit. I find that walking is the way I stay fit, it is easy to do at my age 50 +

thundar 5 pts

It's hard. I try to think about what I'm doing for my family.

pauline15 5 pts

I figured out that staying fit and taking care of myself as an important aspect of my life when I first had to buy a size 14 pant after having my son. For me, that was personally devistating and keep them as a reminder to never visit those pants personally again!

How i stay fit is working out everyday with weights and a cardio routine. And I walk the dogs 3 times a day.
