Still Hates Pickles, Suburban Scrawl, Homeslice, and The Happy Runner

The first person who inspired me to set a goal to begin with was my dear friend, Sara. I watched her complete her first triathlon. I listened to her tales of training for that triathlon, and finally learning to swim at 28 years old. I was inspired, amazed, and jealous.

I remember sitting under a tree on a cold and rainy August day in Seattle. Vividly. I sat under a tree to help keep me dry while I nursed my 6 week old son. My first child. I was a full-on post-partum mess.

That morning I watched woman after woman after woman cross the finish line. Women of every imaginable shape… teens through the late 70's. I heard Sara's name announced as she crossed the finish line… I heard people cheering for cancer survivors crossing the finish line…  and the 70-something year old woman who crossed the same finish line that my fit, fun and young friend Sara crossed.

It was in that moment… I knew I could do "it". No. I knew I HAD to do it.

And I did, albeit 2 years later. Fast forward 11 years, and 2 more babes… I am still doing it. Those first seeds of inspiration from Sara inspired me to go… but today, it is others that continue to plant seeds along the path of my journey…

And that's the thing, it is a journey. I find that after 10+  years into making fitness a priority… striving to live a very different life I had lived in my unhealthy years of youth -- it is others that help keep me on the path.

My flickering commitment is fueled when, after hearing about my very "non-runner" past, a friend tells me she assumed I was always a runner… I get inspired to continue reaching when I get a call or email about what event will be next on the calendar… or when I know friends are waiting for me to run with 5 in the morning. It is inspiring when others tell me that my efforts inspire them! This is definitely a motivation to keep on keepin' on! And last but not least… My kids. They expect that most days Mommy works out, and they like that I do. Listening to them weigh the pros and cons of exercise and food choices inspires me. My kids and a hope for their good health -- those things inspire me to keep reaching and setting fitness goals.

I view fitness as a journey. It took a long time to get here, veering, getting back, veering… but never slipping back to who I used to be. I need these points of inspiration to help keep my focus and help me remember why I get up early or say "no" when I want to say "Yes, MORE!". I am thankful to have people around me who enable my new hope for my life. They are my inspiration.

My friends laugh and mock me because over the past year, on my own weight loss journey, I've become obsessed with jillian michaels. I love her. And some days when I just don't want to work out, I'll play one of her old podcasts or just imagine if she were there and how she would yell and scream and tell me that I'm the only one who can do this for me and that I need to believe I deserve it. Usually works.

She is a dynamo. And she's only 2 years younger than me. While I feel like a slug, she's dancing the night away. She wants to travel, and you gotta be in shape to travel! So I have to say that she is my inspiration, otherwise I'm afraid I'd just give up...

Jesus is pure inspiration to me. That He gave up everything He had to come to earth as a lowly man, just so that I might have life everlasting?? The suffering He endured on my behalf inspires me to be everything He would have me to be! :)

Right now I am struggling to stay inspired, but my health is forcing me to get exercise. Regular walking helps keep my blood sugar lower, which I need to continue to do while I'm pregnant. Gestational diabetes sucks, but it certainly is motivation to get moving!

Like so many others, the show the Biggest Loser really inspires me. I just, at 43, ran my first half marathon because I saw the finalists on Biggest Loser do it and I thought, if they can, so can I!

I'm inspired by clothes. I love clothes, love to shop, but hate looking frumpy in them. A tad shallow, but it works for me. :)

I stay inspired by seeing my progress each week. How much farther, how much stronger I'm getting, and how my husband is doing the same.

My son, my dog and my guy - not necessarily in that order - keep me inspired.

Any, or either of them, on any given day, make me want to be my best and have my best health!

Most often its my pooch because she actually is the cutest of us all and enjoys a good vigorous walk that you must be in shape for!

Both of my parents were very competitive so I grew up trying to avoid playing with them. Sad but true! I never really enjoyed physical activity because I never wanted to beat anyone or feel belittled because of that. Now that I'm a mom, I want to be more fit just to show my kids that they can be physical for themselves, not necessarily to win. I want them to grow up with a better attitude toward healthy activity.

It's SO true... exercise is our friend... so many of us need that constant reminder... and it's reading stories about other's journies that help us remember that. Thank you so much for taking the time to share :)

I decided to walk in the Susan G. Komen 3-Day to get into shape. I stay inspired by my teammates and by thinking of the women this disease has taken too early. I walk for them.

My mom inspires me, in more ways than just staying healthy. After having seven children, she went back to school to earn her B.A., then her M.A. and became an elementary school teacher. She also decided two years ago that she wanted to run a marathon, trained for it, and completed it-with a good time, too! She has always inspired me go for what I want in life and to never give up. <3

I live in an elderly community.
I see so many of the residents with canes, wheelchairs and other various health issues.
I don't want to be like that and this is what inspires me.

I'm not a complainer. Instead I take the negative and try to turn it into something very positive. I know that I annoy lots of people because of it. As a result I find inspiration in just about everything.

Ten years ago I had an accident. I was told that I'd never walk "normally" again. Never one to succumb to the word "never" plus the fact that I'm too vain to walk in crutches, a leg brace and ugly shoes (never mind be stuck in a wheelchair), I began my journey to learning how to walk. Seven surgeries couldn't help me, but the determination to go on was so strong.

When asked by my doctor what I wanted to be able to do, my response was twofold.

1. I wanted to drive a car again (it was my right leg that was injured).

2. I wanted to wear sexy sandals.

I went out and bought a pair of the HOTTEST LOOKING SANDALS ever. I kept them in front of me, brought them to physical therapy and worked by "you know what" off EVERY DAY. Those sandals were my inspiration.

Who would have thought that a cute pair of sandals would help me walk again.

By the way, if you saw me at evo recently on the dance floor - I'm sure that you're shocked by this post. For those who don't know me. I don't even LIMP. Yes, I still have the "disability" - but it's my little secret now. Because I've been inspired - by a pair of shoes.

Since I'm really into martial arts despite getting a late start, I keep myself inspired to exercise by making my goals realistic and karate-centered, like my current goal. I want to get faster and stronger at sparring, so I'm doing a combination of some light distance running for endurance and sprints for leg strength, along with exercises to strengthen my core muscles (back, abs, butt, etc) so I can move as quickly as possible.

I took up running (on the treadmill) about 3 weeks ago, but recently hurt my ankle and had to give it up. I'm having a difficult time staying inspired when I can barely walk :(

BShallue 5 pts

When I run, I focus on the air moving in and out of my lungs. I have asthma and running was a challenge growing up. But running helped me strengthen my lungs and get my asthma under control. I also think of loved ones and friends who can't run for various reasons, and I run for them, grateful that I can.

I can't say anyone in my family inspires me....but my doctor did. He said my cholesterol was high, I have high blood pressure, pre-diabetic, my triglycerides were high...it was like WOW!!! After all these years of having normal ranges I am so out of whack I better do something and losing weight and getting fit was number 1 priority.

At the point that I was really feeling ill, my son was still really small. And I knew that I didn't want to leave this life with him having very little memory of me.

He's older now, but you know what? He still needs me here.

I used to eat junk all the time but caring for my husbands sick mother inspired me to take a closer look at the lifestyle I was leading. I didn't exercise enough and didn't eat healthy. I don't want to have avoidable problems as I get older so she was definetly my inspiration to lead a healthier lifestyle!

For me, trying new workouts is key for staying inspired. Since I live in Chicago, there are tons of fitness centers with new classes and that keeps me excited to stay fit. I recently started going to a pilates-with-fitness ball class regularly and I'm hooked on that.

My inspiration is remembering that God placed me inside this temple and I must take great care of it. I also love to watch Biggest Loser, and Losing it with Julian Michaels. It helps to remind me we all struggle with problems, but exercise can ease some of the stress. It helps that when you start to lose weight and SEE the difference it helps keep you motivated!

My inspiration for choosing to live a healthy lifestyle which includes exercise and diet is my sister! My sister died 5 years ago prematurely at the age of 48 from complications of Heart Disease. As a health care professional, I am also aware of my genentic disposition for Heart Disease. This is a disease that is preventable with diet and exercise. I hope that women will take the challenge and become heart healthy with their diets and exercise...I am now 48 yr. old just like my sister...

Last year my husband became ill. His illness caused major stress for us which had a really bad effect on my health. So now that he is health again. He is my hero and I amazed as his ability to stay upbeat, he is a true inspiration. Because if him and my children I struggle but stay focused to eat right and be there for them.

Now that I'm nearing middle age, it is more about avoiding health issues. It is essential to take care of the body you were given by eating foods that are healthy, getting enough hydration, doing some type of exercise daily and staying mobile.
