Dancing with the Stars Recap: The Top 6 Engage in Threesomes

BlogHer Original Post

Come on, they had to expect the jokes, right?

This week the top 6 performed two dances: a Ballroom Round and a Threesome Round. (Sorry, Trio Round, whatevs.) For the latter round, the Pro invited another Pro (either from the troupe or an eliminated Pro) to dance with them.

Here's how it went down.

1. Donald and Peta

Ballroom Round: The Tango. He's got the intensity. He's got good posture. He's got sharp feet. He really leads. He could work on straightening his legs better when it's called for, but I enjoy his work. And his work ethic.

Threesome Round: The Jive with Karina. Wow, that was fantastic. They really took the threesome requirement seriously, and did the most stuff, and the most complicated stuff, involving all three of them. Donald does a lot more for me than William.

Bottom line: I think Donald is safe.

2. Maria and Derek

Ballroom Round: The Viennese Waltz. That was just lovely. And yes, emotional. And graceful…and all the womanly stuff Maria claims she doesn't naturally have (and Derek seems to give her crap about).

Threesome Round: Samba with Henry (in the Bollywood style). Well, it was only slightly inauthentic with all that blinding whiteness. I like Bollywood a lot, but call me a fuddy duddy purist: I had to agree with Len that it wasn't a very Samba-y Samba. But nor was it a really awesome Bollywood number. So, sort of lose-lose.

Bottom line: I'm a little afraid for them, because I think the Bollywood thing was a big mis-calculation.

3. Melissa and Maks

Ballroom Round: The Foxtrot. The beginning was very rough, although it improved as it went along. But it was clear their chemistry was off…it felt cold. I don't know why the whole sighing and head shaking went on after they finished. Haven't they ever heard of playing off a performance like it was brilliant no matter what. Half the time the audience won't even know you screwed up if you don't telegraph it!

Threesome Round: The Samba with Val. Yeah, Melissa's issue is that she doesn't have natural musicality/rhythm. She's usually on beat, but it's something she has to think hard about and concentrate deeply on. It's not something she just feels.

Bottom line: Oh God, can she please go home now? I mean I like her, I do. But she is not a great dancer, and she hasn't improved so much that I'm falling out of my chair. It's time, just time.

4. Katherine and Mark

Ballroom Round: The Viennese Waltz. This was nice, but it didn't have the emotional content of Derek and Maria's. And then they ruined all that elegance and grace by doing an unnecessary throw spin to end the piece. Both the entrance to and exit from the spin were rough. And that was my last impression of the dance.

Threesome Round: The Cha Cha with Tristan. Katherine experienced an anti-wardrobe malfunction in which she stayed too well clothed. Good for her for just going on and finally kicking off that stray tearaway pants leg that wouldn't tear away. She was so smooth and professional looking. Her dancing is really on a higher level.

Bottom line: Gotta be safe, absolutely.

5. Roshon and Chelsie

Ballroom Round: The Foxtrot. He was at his best when they were not in hold, because he finally got to show some of his own personality and flair. But he was pretty charming throughout.

Threesome Round: The Paso Doble with Sasha. Not enough threesome: Sasha disappeared for a really long portion of this. They did a good job, though, and Roshon was very strong and very confident.

Bottom Line: This was a fantastic night for Roshon, but I don't think it will save him.

6. William and Chery

Ballroom Round: The Foxtrot. I really liked it, but I didn't think it was triple-ten worthy. Sometimes his face looked a little too furrowed-brow-of-concern, not carefree and effortless. And sometimes his hands were a little too inelegant for me.

Threesome Round: The Paso Doble with Tony. Speaking of inelegant hands: Hey, I know where Ralph Macchio's spatula hands went! But yes, his posture was terrific. And he cut, as they say, a very fine figure indeed.

Bottom line: He's kind of a lock for the finals, isn't he?

Bottom Line for the Bottom Two:

Should be: Melissa and Roshon

Will be: Melissa and Roshon

Can it be anyone other than Melissa and Roshon who goes home?  Roshon because he clearly doesn't have the fan base, and Melissa because she deserves to.

What do you think?
