And I'm going to stand by my original prediction
Last night was a pretty consistently good finale show for DWtS, so let's get right down to it, shall we?
1. Kelly and Louis
OK, yes, I'm a little bitter that Kelly made it through, instead of Joanna, but I can also see that neither Joanna nor Kelly would win this thing, so it actually doesn't make that much difference. That being said, Kelly and Louis's kick-off Argentine Tango was the best routine Kelly has ever done. She really kept it together, had a lot of intricacy and complexity to what she delivered and had the right steely focus and intensity for the job. My only quibble would be that her posture was perfect...her shoulders needed to be back a bit, and her chin was thrust too far forward. But a great start for Kelly. Her Freestyle, on the other hand? Well, let's be polite and say "Well, that wasn't so good, was it?" [Bonus points for recognizing the pop culture reference.] It was tremendously awkward and clunky, and you could see every mistake writ large. I did love Bruno's excuse that hey, back in the 70's Disco era, sometimes people fell on the dance floor. Uh huh. BECAUSE THEY WERE HIGH, BRUNO.
Bottom line: I gotta think between being lowest on the judges' leaderboard and her obvious mess-ups in the Freestyle, she'll be coming in 3rd Place.
2. Mya and Dmitry
This season's ringer would win if it were left to dancing (and judges scores) alone. But it's not. They kicked off with a Paso Doble that I wouldn't have given a perfect 10 to, if it were me judging. I didn't think it was good enough. The choreography was kind of boring and certainly lacked enough variety. It was trying to be like Mel B and Maks's Paso from a few seasons ago, but I didn't think it was close. (Also, it's like the guitar player didn't actually know how to play that song, did anyone else notice that?) Their Freestyle was really cute and high energy. I thought the judges were overly hard on them. The rap I would give them was for being almost exactly like Hairspray...not original enough, and not enough tricks. Throw her around some more!
Bottom Line: She's the best dancer, but not the best performer or most likable personality. 2nd Place is my guess.
3. Donny and Kym
I predicted early on that the voting audience would be blinded by Donny's blinding Osmondness, and that he would win. I mean, if Marie could come in 3rd Place, and not be nearly as good as Donny, then, that tells you something. Donny and Kym kicked off with a Cha Cha Cha. Although there was an awkward fumble in the very beginning, they recovered perfectly, and the rest was charming. Donny loosened up about 100%, shaking those hips and demonstrating the musicality that, oddly enough, he was lacking a bit in earlier weeks. Their Freestyle was showy and just what this show thrives on. There were a couple of moments where Donny looked like he was working a bit too hard, but generally, I'm not surprised it got such high marks.
Bottom line: Um. Did I mention the Osmondness?
You'll notice I didn't mention their odd new feature, the MegaMix Challenge, where all three couples danced the same choreography for three different styles side-by-side simultaneously. I didn't like it. When they weren't in synch, which was often enough, it was a big mess and hard to determine who was right or who was wrong. They all did a credible job, but it was no surprise that they finished in this order: Mya, Donny, Kelly.
So, that's it: I give the win to Donny.
What do you think?
