Dating web site BeautifulPeople.com kicked off 5,000 people after “vigilant members” reported users whose profile pics showed they gained weight. beautiful peopleNow don’t get all upset said the sites managing director Greg Hodge, ”We responded to complaints by moving the newly chubby members back to the rating stage. This is the same as having them re-apply.”  BeautifulPeople.com , an, “elite online club, where every member works the door,” has strict membership rules and to gain membership you must be approved by the beautiful community of narcissists. Ugly applicants need not apply. ”Letting fatties roam the site is a direct threat to our business model and the very concept for which BeautifulPeople.com was founded,” said founder Robert Hintze. It’s hard to see the words in print but the reality is that most people who visit dating sites, matchmakers or bars will say they do not want to date an over weight person. And that hurts. Alot. In fact, a matchmaker who I interviewed got angry calls from women upset that she refused to take overweight clients. The matchmaker’s response: why take their money if I can’t get them a man?  It wasn’t her rule. It was the male clients who said they flat out would not consider a larger woman. Even in episodes of the 650 pound virgin, David Smith, who lost 400 pounds, won’t date big girls. So is it wrong to kick off “fatties” on a web site if in reality most people won’t click on their profile or ask them out on a second date? I don’t think the web site is to blame, we are! And it’s a shame. But is it wrong to say looks are important, health is important as a dating requirement?  I’m not sure. But I do know it’s not OK to say the beautiful is skinny or rich or blond or tan or tall. Beauty comes in all shapes and sizes. And frankly, if the folks at BeautifulPeople.com eliminate you on the basis of weight gain, I’d hate to be in any kind relationship with them.  (Follow www.chicktalkdallas.com/blog)
