DAY TRIP SERIES: (Delicious) Poughkeepsie, NY
Something yummy is happening in Poughkeepsie, New York. Just a 1-1/2 ride from Manhattan brings you to a lovely town nestled in Duchess County.
If you have the opportunity to visit Poughkeepsie and you're looking for something delicious for breakfast, lunch or dinner, you are in for a real treat at the Culinary Institute of America (http://www.ciachef.edu/) in Hyde Park. This cooking school should not be overlooked and it is just a few minutes from the Amtrak train station in Poughkeepsie.
The beautiful campus setting transports you to a quaint Italian village. It proudly hosts four restaurants---all of which are serviced by the students. Yes; the students do the cooking and serving! These are top-notch restaurants managed by these future chefs! In fact, some well-known celebrity chefs had their humble beginnings at this cooking school. Just check out the pictures in the visitors building...
Advance reservations are required for the restaurants; with the exception of the Apple Pie Bakery. One more thing: Be sure to check their website before you visit for scheduled restaurant/campus closings since the students do take semester breaks.
And of course, you can always purchase some "goodies to go" at the Apple Pie Bakery for your journey back home.
