Dear Mr. President: All We Are Saying is Give Beets a Chance

Food lovers all over the U.S. were elated at news of the developing White House vegetable garden, but for many serious cooks, joy turned to dismay when it was revealed that the President used his veto power over one much-loved vegetable. Yes, it has been confirmed that there will be no beets in the White House Garden, because apparently President Obama can't stand beets.

Moderate beet protests have ensued for more than a month now, with Marion Burros writing a roundup of beet-loving bloggers who have urged the president to reconsider. Despite the outcry from the millions of Americans who love beets, there's no word of any change of heart regarding beets on the White House table.

Those of who love beets are wondering if possibly the President has only had soggy salad bar beets from a can? Could it be that his mother never cooked beets, so he grew up without realizing what wonderful beet creations are possible? In the spirit of bi-partisan beet lobbying, we're presenting a collection of beet dishes we think would certainly change his mind, if only he would take a bite. Come on, Mr. President, all we are saying is give beets a chance!

Blogger TW at Culinary Types writes a persuasive post telling the President Yes We Can Enjoy Roasted Beets and Goat Cheese Gratin. I can't imagine how one bite of this wouldn't make a beet-lover out of anyone. (In the comments on this post Lydia from The Perfect Pantry wrote "All we are saying is give beets a chance . . ." and she generously allowed me to use it as the title for this post.)

Word is that arugula has made it into the garden, so we can assume that the President likes it. Maybe this Arugula Salad with Beets and Goat Cheese from Simply Recipes would be the one to sway him.

Photobucket
Photo of Karelian Borscht from Kitchen Parade.

No blogger has done more to promote the eating of beets than Alanna from Kitchen Parade, who has a huge collection of beet recipes that all look good. Maybe the President could warm up to the idea of eating beets if he had them in a hot soup like this Karelian Borscht, served with a dollop of sour cream.

Another blogger who loves beets is Pille from Nami Nami (aka The Beet Princess) and their mutual love of beets has fostered a great friendship between Alanna and Pille. I bet Pille's gorgeous Cheesy-Garlicky Beetroot Bruschetta would be something the president couldn't resist.

Photobucket

Finally, no word on how the President likes chocolate, but if Michelle feels the need to disguise the beets a little we recommend the Dark Chocolate and Beet Brownies from La Tartine Gourmande.

You can see why I've never dared to mention it until now. Actually I don't like strawberry pie all that much either. I'm a sour/sweet fan like key lime pie or lemon meringue pie. But that's mostly wishful thinking; I hardly ever eat pie.

Not like rhubarb? GASP! Strawberry rhubarb pie is the zenith of pies, the Grande PoohBah of pies, the Quintessential Pie! It is the pie brought to earth by angels singing glorious songs of praise.

to hot, definitely before habanero, but I do like jalapenos pretty warm. ;-)

Ten o'clock in the morning, and I'm fancying nachos with jalapenos, black olives, artichoke hearts, sun-dried tomatoes, sharp cheddar...

ruh roh!

I like hot peppers too, but only if they're not *too* hot!

Now a nice jalapeno pepper, mmmm!

Wow, I could not imagine cooking without those 2 things. It just shows how different people's tastebuds can really be doesn't it?

no beets for me.

I'm a veggie lover, but beets fall on my dislike list with turnip, onions, and scallions.

I have to say I don't remember ever liking it. My mother made rhubarb pie which everyone loved but me.

Especially rhubarb cream pie.  Yum!  I don't remember not liking rhubarb.

But I am pretty much with you on this rhubarb thing. Of course I try not to eat sugar, and rhubarb without sugar is going to be awful. But even when I used to eat sugar, I never liked it.

. . . and now this! I hope some chef out there takes up this cause and converts him. Such a delicious thing to be missing out on.

I must try that gratin ASAP. Looks to die for!

Here's my hated-food confession: Rhubarb. BLEAH! I do realize I just may have never had it prepared properly (as was demonstrated not too long ago with Brussels sprouts), but so far, um, nothankyou.

Edited to add: Aha, now that I go to grab that gratin recipe, I see they already made that connection to Bush the First.  Ditto on that!

My sister Pam is the same way about beets, eggs, horseradish, and artichokes, all four of which are foods I love. I'm convinced that people have different taste buds. Keeps life interesting.

My daughter is a beet-hater and there's no way another variety of beet would tempt her to taste them.  She might go for the beet greens, though, if she didn't know what they were initially.

I've never considered myself a picky eater, but there are a number of things I really don't like and no amount of cajoling from anyone is going to get me to eat them.  It doesn't matter how nutritious they are or how much other people like them -- I'm not eating them.

My husband also hates beets. I like them. But he goes bananas for beet greens, sauteed with a little olive oil, garlic, and then finished with a dash of red wine vinegar. They are divine.

Perhaps Michelle could plant beets, serving only the greens to the President, leaving the delicious beets themselves for everyone else.

Kalyn Denny 5 pts

I have to agree, we have a pretty cool president! I think offering him some different types of beets is a great idea.

Thank you for including me, Kalyn :)

If your president is so averse to beets, maybe he shouldn't try with different recipes, but with different beets? Perhaps golden beets wouldn't scare him as much? And who could resist the pretty Chioggia beets?

But I agree - you've got yourself a cool President this time :)

I know that Beets are scary at first, but let it be know that they offer so many nutritional values that cannot be found in any other food, that you ladies are stupid not to eat them.

So I urge you ladies dont pass but EAT BEETS

You'll be allowed to take a pass on the beets.

Oh, Im sorry but I cannot stand beets. I could not think of a way that you could serve them up that would taste good at all.

I'm happy to allow everyone their likes and dislikes but here's the thing, just because we don't like beets (or whatever) cooked one way, doesn't mean we won't like them cooked another way.

Besides, it's a bad example to children (and, say, leaders of other countries) to exclude an entire food (or say, an entire line of thinking).

Obama's doing a GREAT job of listening on the world front, why not to beets too?

Instead of dismissing / forgoing beets (and say, views of other countries), perhaps he might take this approach, the one that works at millions of tables across the world.

"You don't have to like it, but you DO have to taste it."

PS My works-every-time way to do beets for people who are uncertain, Beets with Feta ( http://kitchen-parade-veggieventure.blogspot.com/2... ). Yum.

I have heard wonderful things about them. Okra is not one of my favorites either, but I can eat it. I think you're right that people react to different foods in different ways. (Personally I start going crazy when I eat sugar, try to avoid it most of the time!)

Despite my teasing here about Obama's food preferences (which is really meant to be more of a celebration of beets for those of us who love them, hope that's clear) I agree that everyone should be entitled to their own food choices.

Kalyn Denny
Kalyn's Kitchen ( http://kalynskitchen.blogspot.com )

...but don't try to feed me Brussels sprouts or okra.  I think we're all entitled to our likes and dislikes.  The big thing for me is making derogatory comments about them.  Just because someone doesn't like beets or Brussels sprouts or okra or whatever, doesn't mean it's nasty and no one should eat it.

Oh, don't ever try to get me to drink a glass of milk, either.  It will never happen.  I can't swallow it.

Gena Haskett 6 pts

I got turned on to Golden Beets at local farmer's market. Love 'em! I do understand his passionate dislike if I swap out Beets for Okra. I know I've had Okra in soups, I don't like it but I can take it.

Naked on a plate? Ain't gonna happen, nope - nasty, slimy and quarter past repulsive. I had to eat them when I was younger and my body really does not like the taste or the fact that they are inside my body.

It is not just about the taste. It can be what the food does to your body that forges such a repulsion.

I can take it or leave it. I agree, it's unnatural, but I don't mind the taste.

My #1 most loathsome vegetable is ..

baby corn.

It just seems so un-natural. And it feels wierd in the mouth.

And it tastes odd.

Ikkkkk...I ask at every Chinese restaurant -- "please, no baby corn!" I don't even like looking at it!

I'm not so hot on bamboo shoots either (although they aren't even close to being in the same yuck-ness league as water chestnuts.) Also don't like chicory and guava is not high on my list either.

But escarole??? Love it! And I like lima beans and LOVE celery (although I can't really eat it now with braces!)

Isn't it fun!

I do believe you're on to something with the different taste buds. There is actually research to show that cilantro tastes different to different people, and that it's partly a genetic difference.

First Kalyn (and Lydia) "Give beets a chance?" ROFL!! I almost spit up laughing on my screen! I am singing it now...

Secondly, I adore beets. S'Ok if you and Obama don't, Maria. I hate lima beans, escarole, bamboo shoots, chickory, guavas (and celery kind of creeps me out.) Most fruits (except the aforementioned guava) are fine.

I think people may be born with different taste buds ..we may actually taste things differently, each from the other...what the heck, it's a partial explanation anyway -- even if I did make it up.

I'm not big on green peppers either, although I can eat them but I wouldn't go out of my way to get them. I can't think of any other fruits or vegetables I don't like, but I'm actually pretty lukewarm on fruits compared to vegetables. There are a few fruits I really like, but most of them I can take it or leave it.

Yes, I know I'm weird! See, we are all weird in our own ways.

Cantaloupe causes a gag reflex in me, it's very odd, I taste it and want to spit it out. And I was treated to copious amounts of it as a kid so that might affect my affection or lack thereof. I enjoy other melons just fine.

And I also dislike avocado and bell peppers. Otherwise I'm a big fan of fruits and vegetables - even the dreaded brussel sprout which I adore. But my weirdo dislikes made it very hard to eat out when I was a vegetarian - apparently normal people really enjoy what I dislike.

Sorry for hijacking your thread. Thanks for giving me a post to rant on ;)

There aren't many foods I hate, but can't stand water chestnuts, the texture bugs me, so I can relate.

is this issue. It's torture living in the Alice Waters hood these days since she's leading the chorus. Why must everyone assume that President Obama could not possibly have ever tried beets or only had beets from a can? (Not picking on you, Kalyn - every single pro-beet article suggests this) He is not a recalcitrant toddler protesting vegetables on defiant principle. It's not like beet fans are going to get him to play for the beet team if only he tastes the right one.

I, like the president, loathe beets. And I have had them freshly picked, from an organic garden, simply and beautifully prepared and everyone else around me found them insanely delicious. Still hate, hate, hate them. Second only to cantaloupe which literally makes me gag even though it is also much beloved.

Just think, if we confirmed beet haters don't eat them, more for you who love them :)

[off to make my "leave Obama alone" video in the style of Chris Crocker's "leave Britney alone" YouTube classic ;)]
