Debate Debates And Pooping Puffins: This Week in Canadian Politics

I prefer to be a political ostrich, with my head stuck in the sand ignoring all the chaos around me. But during elections I have to vote so like everyone else I do have to try to pay attention to the issues and therein lies the problem. What are the issues? Since we weren't expecting an election this fall we didn't have a build up to it. And since there was a vote of no confidence we don't have an issue that brought down the government. The Elections Canada website can't even tell me who's running in my riding. So what has been going on this week in Canadian politics? Debate debates, pooping puffins, and general election apathy.

Debate Debates:
One of the biggest issues to come up so far has to do with the debates. Elizabeth May, the leader of the Green Party, was fighting to be included. The Green Party has never been including in the televised debates, largely because they've never had an elected candidate. While that is the case, just before the election was called an independent MP became a Green Party member. May was determined to be in the debates. Some of other leaders didn't want to play nice and said that if she was included they were going to pack their toys and go away. Shannon posted a letter she received from the Green Party on ThreeSeven. The other leaders have since relented and the Green Party will be represented in the debates. Michelle is rejoicing that she can watch the debates now that May is in them. As for May, you can follow her campaign on her blog.

Pooping Puffins:
Even though the Canadian election campaign is short it's still very early in the election for attack ads to hit out. Particularly ads that involve a puffin pooping on the shoulders of leader of political party. No, I'm not making this up. See for yourself.

Yep, that's a puffin pooping on Liberal leader Stephen Dion, with sound effects no less. How lovely! And mature! Conservative Party leader, and current Prime Minister, Stephen Harper had to publically speak out against the pooping puffing because it came from his party, "It was tasteless and inappropriate. We have enough differences with the Liberals without getting into that kind of thing. So it has been removed and my apologies for it having been up."Runesmith, who was in a Liberal campaign office when she first heard of it said she originally thought it was a joke. Donna Lee does admit that "Pooping Puffing" sounds like a good name for alternative rock band though. Indeed.

Election Apathy:
The Last Amazon sounds kind of like how hear many feel about this election - disillusioned.

Canadians are to go to the polls on October 14th, and frankly, my biggest worry is staying awake long enough to vote. I freely admit to a general apathy with the whole process this time round so I really don’t know any of the issues – burning or otherwise.

And Dawn, she definitely has election apathy and lists the reasons why, including this one.

Have you ever seen a more boring slate of candidates. While our cousins to the south are currently engaged in their "election for the ages", we staid and dull Canucks are fielding a group of white, middle aged XYers with nary a funny bone among the lot.

What will next week bring? Hopefully less poop.

While I agree on the apathy being widespread, I think the Elizabeth May/Debate issue caused a lot of people to wake up and take notice. Harper and Layton backed down due to public outcry. I"m hoping that people stay engaged like that for the rest of the election.

I could definitely do with less poop (from the candidates and my daughter ;) ).

I'm really hoping that one of the candidates will respond to my emails. I'll let you know if/when it happens. Thank you for your overview! Love it.

(And I'm really hoping for more substance... maybe a discussion on NAFTA?)

the US election is making me, I'm trying to picture one of our candidates running that puffing poopin... I mean pooping puffin ad against the other.  It surely would be right in the flow of things. :)
