Defending Intolerance: Terry Jones and the Quran

Koran

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve heard the news. In a naked reach for publicity, Terry Jones, the pastor of the Dove World Outreach Center in Florida, announced that his church plans to burn copies of the Quran on the anniversary of September 11th.

Yesterday, in response, Gen. David Petraeus, the U.S. commander in Afghanistan, warned that the church’s plans to burn the Quran could endanger the lives of U.S. service members in Afghanistan and would be used by Islamic extremists to incite violence. He’s right. It’s happened before.

Terry Jones is displaying hatred, intolerance, greed and callous indifference to the lives of Americans fighting overseas.

The Dove World Outreach Center claims to be a Christian church. Their website states that “Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life.” Then in the next paragraph the church directly contradicts the tolerant teachings of Christ with this whopper:

Any religion which would profess anything other than this truth is of the devil. This is why we also take a stand against Islam, which teaches that Jesus is not the Son of God, therefore taking away the saving power of Jesus Christ and leading people straight to Hell.

Lovely, just lovely. According to the DWOC, 70 percent of the world is going to hell. And apparently they don’t understand the teachings of Christ any more than they understand the teachings of the Quran. I hate to paraphrase an Indiana Jones movie, but maybe they should try reading books instead of burning them.

Then we add in the callous indifference displayed by Terry Jones and his church to the lives of Americans serving overseas in Afghanistan. General Petraeus is undoubtedly correct; this publicity stunt will be used as a rallying cry among Islamic extremists. Americans will die as a result.

I say that this is a publicity stunt because it is. Terry Jones is hawking copies of his new book, Islam is of the Devil, front and center on the church’s website. (I’m not going to link it. You can find it pretty easily if you’re that motivated.) He is apparently willing to trash the ideals of the Constitution, religious tolerance, the free exchange of ideas and American lives so that he can make a buck and spread his message of hate.

The irony of all this, of course, is that while Mr. Jones is busy stomping on the ideals of this country, the very Americans he’s endangering are off fighting a war for him. This isn’t political, it’s reality. My sailor husband, my soldier brother and my airman father and their fathers before them all swore to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States. So that Mr. Jones could be free to burn books at his leisure.

I hope that Terry Jones and his followers are right and that they will be judged by their God. Because I have a feeling that they will be judged harshly.

What I can not understand is why have the Arabs. November terrorists do not hate Arabs. Terrorists come in all faiths. People must learn to respect them just as we respect ourselves.

Great Post!

I find it funny that we can't really arrest the guy for burning these books... because they would violate some of his first amendment rights.

What was that right again? Oh yea Freedom of speech, coupled with you know...Freedom of Religion. Splendid! (sarcasm)

Let's hope not, we fear the unknown, so let's hope we can learn more about Islam so this doesn't happen in the future.

Interesting tidbit from this morning's Wichita Eagle: the Phelps clan are pretty annoyed about this stunt. Because, see, THEY burned a Quran on a DC street during one of their protests back in 2008. And they didn't get any attention for it!

It reminds me of intolerance of any one or thing or idea we consider "other" and unfortunately this idea is running rampant at the moment.

Do actions like burning the Quran remind anyone else of people marching through the streets burning the American Flag? It's always disheartening that people pay pay more attention to bigotry than they do to peace and reconciliation. We are doing a week long series on hatred this week spurred on by just these behaviors...and the Islamophobia that has been stirred up for the Muslim center that is being talked about near the 911 site. Check out the Two Whos to read a perspective by a Muslim woman who is trying to be a model for peace.

You're absolutely right. This is very Fred Phelps-like. Hate over reason.

And I'm sure the irony is completely lost on the hate mongers.

And the hawking of the book was just icing on the cake.

Oh man, that's going to be a three ring circus. Florida does not deserve this.

Very well said. This church is in my home town and I know at least one of the church members and I feel that this man prays on the weak minded person who is looking to latch onto the first person that gives them the slightest bit of attention.

This demonstration is not only going to make things worse overseas but it is also going to be bad in the city itself. The church sits at the entrance to a large housing development with only one way in and the city is having to police the comings and goings of those who live there and requiring 2 forms of ID in order to enter the neighborhood.

Even though I agree with Petraeus about this putting American lives at risk, I also feel like this Jones guy is saying, "well the other guys do it, so why can't we?" We should be better than that.

I wish people could make the connection that just as Jones and his few followers don't speak for all Americans or all Christians, the extremists who attacked us on 9/11 don't speak for all Arabs or Muslems. This is such a sick, sick way to bring attention to oneself. Very Fred Phelps-ish. Blech.

This "so called" pastor is also increasing the fuel that many in this country are using to breed fear of the unknown: Islam.

Fear is going to be the death of us all.

"This is why we also take a stand against Islam, which teaches that Jesus is not the Son of God, therefore taking away the saving power of Jesus Christ and leading people straight to Hell."

Based on that rationale, I guess they'll be lighting up Old Testaments next.

And let's keep in mind, by the way, that some of the people also fighting for Terry Jones' freedom in the US armed services, are Muslims.
